The Penitent Crusade - Black Templars WIP

Recommended Posts

Hello B&C!

This is my second attempt at a WIP painting log, as a form of motivation for me to finally get around to clearing my backlog. The first was a short-lived thread on this very forum, roughly 5(!) years ago, and when it died, my models collected dust in a box and sat unloved and unpainted until I picked them up again last year. In fact, I've had an on-and-off relationship with 40k that's lasted since the 2nd edition, so for once, I'd actually like to finish painting an army that I'm proud of!

My Goal

- Paint every Space Marine model I've assembled up till now in my collection, to a standard that I feel comfortable showing to other people.

- Constantly be increasing my painting standards, and improving on my techniques.

My Theme

- I love Black Templars. I'm not a very good painter, nor am I particularly quick, and when I first started collecting Space Marines in the "modern" era (circa '08), I needed something that was going to be relatively quick to paint without having to do endless rounds of base-coating. The love for crusade imagery and posing marines with close-combat weapons came later.

- Free-hand is something that I started doing because I hate working with decals. Thematically, that means that in my Crusade, every marine is responsible for painting his own heraldry, which leads to a ad hoc, highly individualistic feel that I find works well with Black Templars.

My Crusade

Here are a few pictures of what I've done so far. Let me know what you think - C&C is part of the point!

Awesome mini...I have always loved BT I have 6 unopened upgrade kits...I want to do knights templar or hospitallers scheme...

Wow that was quick, thanks for the reply!

You should totally give it a go if the imagery appeals to you..Black is the easiest thing to paint, and the Maltese Cross is quite an easy chapter mark to do free-hand.

6 kits is probably way more than you'll ever need though - I've only bought maybe 3, and I've still got plenty of parts left over, even after kit-bashing probably every model in my army to some degree.

Taking pictures off a phone in incandescent light isn't great, but I've tried to get some close-up photos. If there's anything that anybody wants to see, I'll try to see what I can come up with!

What I'm working on now:

It's a kit-bashed, counts-as Sternguard group of Sword Brethren. I wanted to figure out a way to make them look more than a mundane group of robed marines with bolters. Following the individualistic streak I'm trying to give my marines, I'm figuring that a group of dedicated marksmen would have equally dedicated, specialised tools - so I experimented with different muzzle breaks using the flamer nozzle, lengthening the overall barrel length and making them look like they've had some serious non-Mechanicum sanctioned mods made to them!

They're about 90% done, just a few details and touch-ups, and then basing.

Next on the painting block:

Counts-as Vanguard Vets with jump packs. I've always liked the image of marines descending from above, using polearms to scythe through the foe - there's a great drawing in the old Codex Daemonhunters called 'Justicar Weiss leads the purging of the tainted basilica of St. Mariel" that I really like that's my main inspiration. I'm trying to make the models look like they've just dropped in from the sky, are surrounded on all sides, and are pushing the enemy back!

And out of the same kit-bashing session, my counts-as Death Company. In my Crusade, they're meant to be scholarly swordmasters whose only task is to break enemy counter-assault units. I thought it was a nice concept to take the near-berserk Death Company and represent their in-game tenacity in a different way. My favourite is probably my power-fist guy throwing a counter left-hook, though I'm really pleased with how the rest of them came out.
