Hello, Brothers!

I'm glad to be back!

Don't want to weigh you guys down with my boring life story so let's just say I've been inexplicably and delightfully busy tongue.png Now to the blog!...

Sons of Horus XVI 25th Company

People who have followed my Heresy Era Armour Marks Tutorials on WIP in the past may remember that my plan in the end was to produce a heresy era army of my own and the first issue I had to overcome was which one. It suffices to say that I finally decided. Nevertheless it should be noted that the vast majority, if not all of my models in this blog will be based on GW and not FW products. I will however use spare bits which some friends have very kindly given to me in aid of this project. For example, my home made contemptor pattern dreadnought will be made from a standard plastic dreadnought and a pair of FW contemptor feet.

My force will comprise of:

Grael Noctua (Centurion)

Contemptor Dreadnought Korbulo

Legion/ Justaerin Terminator Squad (5) Veronae

Katulan Reaver Squad (10) Kaepio

Legion Tactical Squad (10) Warlocked

Legion Tactical Squad (10) Milvian

Legion Tactical Support Squad (5) Gaugamela

Legion Heavy Support Squad (5) Tyron

Legion Predator 'Creeping Barrage'

Legion Outrider Squad (3) Cannae

To start with I have posted (seen below) my unfinished Contemptor Dreadnought Korbulo, and brevet Centurion Grael Noctua in their pre-painted stage.

Grael Noctua

For my first planned HQ I have chosen my favourite (traitor) SoH character which is Grael Noctua, Sergeant of the Warlocked Tactical Squad, 25th Company. Here he appears as a section leader at Istvaan V. I've tried to make the character look brutal and murderous, and yet darkly noble. He is the future replacement for Garviel Loken in the Mournival and as such may personify the saturnine temperament.

Almost the entire torso is made from green stuff and on his chest sits a serpentine eye icon. I have given him a space wolves MKV Mantilla respirator helmet with a plume and a mix of other armour marks.

Contemptor Dreadnought Korbulo

I've always wanted a contemptor dreadnought. From the moment I saw one on the website I became almost obsessed. They look ace. At the time I couldn't afford one and so I made do. Finally I decided I would make one myself although on reflection the lost man-hours, hair and materials in the process have worked out far more that the cost of an actual one tongue.png It was the concept art which was seen at the HH weekender which inspired me to get a shimmy on with it.

His torso is, again, almost entirely composed of green stuff as well as bases and various sprue bits. His helmet is made entirely of green stuff and has a scratch-built (and unfinished) plume on the top. I intend to add chain and skulls and various other icons to the hull and I look forward to finally finishing him tongue.png

Well that's it for my first and embarrassingly brief first post, but then, it has been a long while. Let me know what you guys think smile.png

Thanks very much and once again, good to be back!

Nice return Gawain! Was wondering where you'd run off to. These lads are looking ace, your sculpting still makes me weep tears of hate and envy. The Praetor looks nice, and the contemptor is taking shape brilliantly. I will be following this with interest.

A great start, some awesome sculpting skills. Really looking forward to seeing these guys progress as I'm a big fan of the XVIth. If your Contemptor turns out half as good as that concept art it'll be awesome. I'm itching for the Sons of Horus kits to be released that were previewed at the Open Day too! Saying that, by the looks of things you could probably sculpt some nice torsos along similar lines. The only criticism I can see is there isn't a Sons of Horus icon on the shoulder pads anywhere. Perhaps some variants of the Serpent Eye/Eye of Horus would look good. The skull surrounded by the star (can't remember the proper name for it) on the right pad doesn't really suit the theme, in my opinion.

Keep up the good work. For the Warmaster!

Hey, Guys!

Thanks for all the positive responses smile.png

I've been doing a bit of work on the contemptor today by adding the chain and some of the details. I've also finished the helmet plume details and added some skulls.

Geordie: I totally see what you mean by the Iron Halo detail not necessarily fitting in with the aesthetic. I had some choices to make when it came to insignia and I decided that it would make more sense to keep some of the older, 'imperial' insignia on the armour and add newer honours and insignia to go alongside it, such as lodge medals and chains and glyphs. The way I rationalised it was that these may be kept in a similar way to the way that the aquilla symbols were worn by post-heresy EC. As I say though, I know what you mean and it does seem to come down to taste really smile.png On the plus side if I'm playing wysiwig the Iron Halo can easily represent a Refractor Field generator which is helpful tongue.png

So without further ado lets have a look at some pics biggrin.png

I'm quite happy with how the Contemptor is taking shape. I intend to add a number of other details such as a 'XVI' and some lodge medals, as well as some Cthonian Glyphs. Some studs will probably find their way onto the flanks of the hull also.

Here are some close ups of my fully sculpted skulls hanging from the trophy chain.

And from another angle.

Here's a shot of the back of the plume detail. You may also be able to see my use of bases as a framework for the armour plating.

So that's what I've been up to with my SoH today brothers. Let me know what you think smile.png

Thanks for the interest,

Hey Brothers,

Just a small update.

The Contemptor is progressing well and it's pretty much finished.

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/ContemptorWiP32_zpsfd6a6b5f.jpg

I've put some blue tack in place to hold the separate pieces together in order to give the impression of the finished article. There's still a fair bit of finer detail to be done such as has been done on the torso plating and the bottom of the shin guards. I've also added an extra skull with a bolt wound.

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/ContemptorWiP31_zpse758a476.jpg

For the DCCW I've used the claw from the Helbrute kit to give a hint of dark mechanicum creeping into the repairs. I also intend to include a load of exposed cabling and stuff to give it a more make-shift feel.

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/ContemptorWiP3_zpsd832d25b.jpg

While I've had some spare time in the past few days I've been working a little bit on my MKIV Reavers/ Tactical Marines. These are some I've made up so far. I've taken a close look at the HHWeekender concept art and reaver pics and I've tried to incorporate some of the same ideas here. To be added are chains bearing skulls (you know how this works by now tongue.png) and various other bits like altered helmets. You may notice I've changed around a few plates to give them the odd MKV and MKII feel to suggest they've had to replace armour with make-shift spares.

Firstly, may I please extend my sincerest thanks for the excellent Heresy armour sculpting guides you did last year. They were so well done and clearly presented that I was inspired to start taking the knife to my own marines, something that I wouldn't have had the confidence to do were it not for your example. :)

Secondly, this is all looking fabulous so far. Can't wait to see what you've got in store for us. :)

Hey Brothers,

Anaziel, Batu and Volfen: Thanks very much brothers it means a lot that you like them.

Laborious: I could not have asked for more positive and encouraging feedback so thank you, Laborious :) I intend in the future to revisit the PH-tutorial thread so keep an eye out if youre interested ;)

Jaspcat: I'm flattered brother and I would be happy to accept sculpting commissions. I would however recommend that you don't order one of these :P I mentioned earlier that from all the lost man hours, green-stuff, spare bits and the majority of a standard dreadnought, I might as well have made my own :P I could always convert a standard Contemptor and I'm sure that'd work out more economical. PM me if you want to know more.

Thanks very much guys.

I'll have another post up soon :)
