Calth's Retribution - (No Longer in Progress)

I did One full Company, but that's mostly due to how I wrote Calth for them. I want to do some variance though, perhaps when I have more money

Long live the 129th, brother! Maybe we'll have to do a little tie in work down the road if you're interested. smile.png

>Nice pose on that guy mate. I agree that it's a cool head. Looking forward to seeing this thread grow.

Thanks dude!

Glad you made the jump, man. You'll do the XIII proud, I'm sure.

He looks outstanding so far. Keep it up, brother.

Thank you my man, glory to the Legions.

Guys, I feel like I should show you this forum for more Pre-Heresy stuff, and to showcase your stuff even more.

Cool, haven't seen that board before.

Square Boarding Sheilds and Gladius'!

Precisely, M2C.

I need a challenge at calth my boarding squad need a challenge msn-wink.gif

I dunno if you maniacs will be able to handle the might that is the XIII. msn-wink.gif

Love that pose. Not ridiculously flamboyant. Just calmly badass. smile.png Will be following this eagerly. smile.png

Glad you like it, Laborious.

For sure man. I love doing that sort of stuff

Please tell me when you get to the painting stage, you're going with the darker blue scheme. You know, closer to the real ultramarine blue color.

Absolutely dude, the way they were meant to be. Hopefully something similar to the way they look on the covers of Know No Fear and Betrayer.

Yes! Make me like an Ultramarine army. I dare you. I double-dog dare you!

Square Boarding Sheilds and Gladius'!

Precisely, M2C.

Already liking the sounds of this.

You're making me want to spiral 10,000 years in the past myself! Awesome Calth vet, Darth smile.png

LOL!

As much as I like MK IV armor I'm thinking of monomark army with MK 3 armor for the bodies. But I'll throw in varient helmets and shoulders throughout.

Delicious. The VII needs more stubborn sob's on the field.

well how about once this veteran squad is done you ask yourself if your willing to take me on whistlingW.gif

im just saying you may regret it teehee.gif

I will break you. Of course, that is if I ever make my way down to Australia. tongue.png

Excellent.

I think this has finally pushed me over the edge. The XVIIth will march on Calth.

Thanks for the final push!

And the torrential downpour of converts continues. Death to XVII!

Hell I might even get crazy and go inter-Chapter.

inter-legion or inter chapter?

Oops, meant inter-Legion as in multiple Chapters.

Yes, as the others have said. Do it. Do it, now. msn-wink.gif

biggrin.png I have my moments. Oh, I forgot my manners. Darth Potato, Sergeant Potato looks good at the moment. Can't wait to see him painted and whatever else gets pumped out of the arcologies of Calth. biggrin.png

Thank you sir, appreciated!

So. This topic has generated far more of a response than I could have hoped for. Thank you all for helping restore the fire in my belly that keeps me spending way more than I should on plastic resin figures. Even though my passion for 40k has faded exponentially, the B&C is still the finest community around.

I've thought a bit more about the army's background.

Just to be clear these guys won't actually be modeled as fighting on Calth, rather they are the survivors embarking on the pursuit of the Word Bearers still wreaking havoc throughout Ultramar. I'm thinking that maybe the disbanded elements of several Companies have been tentatively united as a newly commissioned Company in one of the XIII's many Chapters. I'd like to do more research on just how many Ultramarines there really were at the start of the Heresy, but the Legion numbers have never been too concrete. We know the Ultramarines are one of the largest Legions, rumored to be meh ~ 250,000 strong. Also, I know we're talking probably at least a year off, but I can't wait until FW gives the XIII the proper treatment.

And I can't get this out of my head, so I'll throw it out there. Opinions wanted, please.

Even in the 31st millennium, the boys in blue are one of the most disciplined military factions. They're a freaking institute. But they are currently blinded by hate. Even the greatest warriors are susceptible to bloodlust and vengeance. I may or may not include a squad of Destroyers. They will be a small band of 5 warriors that exemplify one of the themes behind this force - by any means necessary. The Ultramarines would've been one of the more staunch supporters of eschewing such tactics, in light of alternatives, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

What says you? smile.png

I like the idea.

One question on clarification, IIRC those who stayed on the planet were trapped for seven years, basically missing the Heresy. Since these are survivors from Calth, would they be part of the fleet that retreated with Guilliman?

And I am definitely a fan of "Do what must be done!" tactics.

I knew I wasn't the only one who'd do this. Go for it!

That's three of us.

I think that it is fantastic to see you modeling in the 30K setting Darth.  Your marines used a large number of HH components already and the idea of you making a force post-Calth just reinforces this.  I don't want to get into a bunch of spoilers but have you read "The Mark of Calth" and listened to "Censure" yet?  These two works would be the perfect reference material and I believe that they would provide a great deal of insight into the mindset of the Ultramarines after Calth, especially "Censure."  I am a die hard DA fan and was always a loud detractor of the XIII before the HH Ultramarine books but now even I am starting to sway.  I have listened to "Censure" numerous times and I even have a converted Ultramarine captain almost finished for a friend.  I believe that the XIII would definitely turn to the use of Phosphex and Rad weapons.  There is mention of these weapons being stored on Calth in "Mark of Calth."  Do yourself a favor and read the book and listen to the audio drama, you will not regret it.

What is with these gigantic blocks of epic post quotes on this page?  It's getting a little hard to read on my phone.

Kol: That was my thought process.

Vazzy & Calgar 2.0: Great minds think alike and all that, I suppose.

Mikhail: Thanks dude. I actually just ordered Mark of Calth off Amazon, so it will be here shortly. Hadn't considered Censure, primarily because I'm not a fan of Nick Kyme's previous work with Space Marines. Maybe I'll give it a chance purely for reference material but even then I'll admit it's not too enticing.

And you're right, let's try to keep the quoting down to a minimum. Half the thread is re-quoted posts; it is hard to navigate. My bad. huh.png

Dearth: I didn't mean to come off like a jerk about the quotes or a know it all on the heresy. I'm just obsessed with the whole great story and drama of it. Some authors tell it better than others but I must read and hear it all. I buy all if it as soon as they release it except the Limited Edition Novellas. I refuse to pay $50 for a novel that will be re-released at regular price in a year. I was reluctant at first on the whole audio drama idea but I love them now.

Kol: They seem to change little bits of the fiction from novel to novel as they need to. One book will have Calth cut off from the rest of the Imperium because of its sun the next has ships coming and going. Whatever the author needs to move their story forward seems to be fluid in the grim darkness of the far future.

Oh no Mikhail, you misinterpret me. No harm done. It really is clustered, trying to read in between all the quote boxes is becoming a task. :D

Funnily enogh, I still haven't finished Betrayer. It's served as my pleasure reading and I savor every little bit each time I pick it up. I bring it up because it's my understanding Guilliman & co arrive towards the end. I know older sources claim the underground war on Calth lasted years. In the final pages of Know No Fear, Guilliman and Thiel discuss that they won't be able to rescue anymore from the surface, and that it may be years until they can return. I'm sure Mark of Calth will shed some more light regarding the technicals on the matter. I figure out of a Legion as vast as the Ultramarines, several thousand here and there would've fought on Calth and escaped to continue the fight against the traitors.

IIRC, I don't recall any mention of anyone escaping Calth(after the fleets left) except for one specific individual. You'll see that in Mark of Calth, Darth. So I'm not exactly sure where the change in fluff has happened yet.

However, when the attack at Calth happened, there were a great deal of troops already stationed on the fleet above and what troops weren't were getting ready to be mobilized into the fleet for transport. There a great number of troops that could escape. And IIRC correctly, forty-one of those ships would go to Nuceria to fight the XII and XVII Legion detachments there immediately following the retreat from Calth. However, as far as I know, nothing says those forty-one were the entirety of the surviving fleet. It is more than possible that some of those ships were organized into other response fleets to go after other Traitor fleets. So as far as I know, there is already plenty of justification for someone who was at Calth, to be somewhere else during the Heresy, they just have to be part of the fleets that escaped its sun since no one from the surface got a ride into orbit, as I recall.

Every time I look at this thread, I keep thinking of this:

Getting back on topic, have you thought about something to tie in your figures to the Calth incident? Like the Tyrannic War vets in 40k have bug trophies and whatnot, maybe the marines that were actually at Calth could have something to show that they were there, and the others could have something else to serve as an oath of vengeance or even just recognition of it? Something of an example in modern times is when police wear that black stripe across their badges when a fellow officer is slain in the line of duty.

Kol: Mark of Calth arrived today, so I have some homework to do.... on top of my real homework. pinch.gif

BCK: Yeah I mentioned that briefly in the first post. What exact markings or tokens they will have remains to be seen, though. I'll have a think on it for the next couple weeks. Ideas definitely welcome.

MagicMan & Ludo: Thanks mates!

Right now I'm going over a rough sketch of what the tabletop army will consist of, and what part of the Legion structure they occupy. I want to stress that this army is not being built for the tabletop, rather if it turns out to be a playable force then bonus. I'll do my best but competitiveness is the last thing on my mind.

For example, I can't figure out how to represent the Evocati. I specifically want the army led by the Company's Command Squad, so using the Legion Chosen rules is out. Veterans can't take combat/boarding shields, which I totally thought they could... and I don't really want to build a full ten-man Breacher squad, which by the way, is only ranged weapons and shields. Ugh... I'll figure it out. Looks like I've managed to complicate the most flexible Marine list ever made.

Background's being developed. This guy will lead my "Breacher" themed squad into battle. He's a total bull. I'm thinking most of the Evocati will have shaved their hair into cropped mohawks, one of their personal traditions of unifying after Calth. Not sure if the chainsword will make it to the final version, still weighing other options. I'm really happy with how he's came out so far. Anything I should add or try? I was thinking a simple loincloth or pteruges but don't want to detract from the model too much.

What do you guys think?

Oh and also, Jaspcat, since I have a proper contender - challenge accepted. msn-wink.gif
