Calth's Retribution - (No Longer in Progress)

Update time!

Schools got me by the balls right now, little progress has been made. I thought studding this guy's boarding shield would be cool, turns out it's probably the most masochistic thing I've ever done. Lesson learned. Lining up the little rivets, trying to maintain some cohesive spacing, and actually getting the damn things in the right spot with glue everywhere was grinding. Still need to get some greenstuff into gaps and throw some Mk. III pads on him.

Anyways, I present to you the humble beginnings of Evocatus Caecus.

Also, I have the main pieces tacked together for the Captain. Not sure if I want to work on a few more Tacticals or get started on the head honcho properly. What do y'all think? Thought about his backstory last night while laying in bed, but don't remember most of it. I should be scribbling down notes because I was really digging it. biggrin.png

You had me at armor studs. Awesome stuff Darth.

Sexy. I'm actually digging the studs, I think a coat of paint (hint ;) ) will make him look awesome. There is also an irony in you using an Iron Warrior helm for your Ultramarine.

Awesome, man. More, please.

Awesome stuff fella. Where did you get them studs from?

Good stuff. Always nice to see another Heresy loving brother of the XIII Legion - especially a fellow survivor of Calth.

I too opted for the darker blue on my stuff.  PLease feel free to click through the links on my sig - the WiP shows the Ultras from about half way down page 2.  Then there's some finished stuff in the HoH.  I really need to do some new pics as the finish looks so much better now they've been attacked with Testor's Dullcoat.

First off, thank you all for replying. Your comments help keep me motivated and assure me that spending my money on resin instead of dinner is the right thing to do. Joking. laugh.png

Jasp & Vet Sergeant: Thank you both. You're more of a VI/VII guy, eh Sarge?

Noctus: It's too bad that a few of the XVII will be decorating my bases as footrests. That wine colored crimson just looks oh so good with a smattering of blue boot on top of the back. msn-wink.gif

Vazzy: First, last and only, dude. No one else is getting studded shields, already one too many.

M2C: GET AT ME, BRO. Just let me know whenever you decide to come out of retirement, Grandpa Stallone. My minis may not have paint (yet!), but at least I post my stuff. Seriously though, more beautiful work from you, pronto.

Anaziel: Do it, dude! Would love to see what you can come up with.

Hein: Haha, I think Anaziel's right, everything looks better with studs.

Ferrus: Ferrus! Thank you for that. You're too much of a ghost these days. Hope all is well buddy, would love to see you around here more often. smile.png

Heathens: Folks this just in, we're getting closer to paint-launch day! Really just a matter of me dragging out all the supplies and gettin down. Soon I hope. But thank you, man, appreciate the words. And I love that helmet. Thinking of adding a visor crosspiece on the bridge of the nose (not sure if that has a technical term).

Ludo: Double indeed!

Dorns_fist: Studs are from "Tichy Train Group". Found 'em on eBay. I got size .04" and .05" rivets.

Apologist: Thank you, sir. That's the biggest thing I've been trying to convey with the small amount I've built so far. I want them to look really pissed, really menacing. It's potentially the first time the Ultras are losing grasp of that famed disciplined approach to battle. Emotions are beginning to cloud judgement. Abnett even refers to Guilliman as the "Avenging Son" in Unremembered Empire (though I'm not really sure how I feel about that). You get what I'm after, though.

Rider: For Calth! Checked out your log again. I thought I commented on your True-scale Mino, maybe that was in a HoH thread. Would love to see less yellow & gold and more blue. msn-wink.gif

Lots of great stuff since I last commented. Evocati Tullus in particular oozes character. Impressive and inspiring.

They'll look better with paint, though, hint hint wink.png.

Ramell: Hey buddy, good to see you around. Unfortunately, yes... no more Genesis. That spark just ain't there anymore.

Aw, that sucks, they had great potential.

But now that you're not using them anymore, would you mind if I stole ideas from them?

It's entirely possible you did. There was a whole chunk of that log went AWOL when the forum went down time-before-last :(

I reposted much of what went pic wise, but sadly all the great comments from the community here went :(

Anyway - onwards and upwards and I'll be fitting in what blue I can when I can.

Keep up the good work and get some blue of your own down ;)

Thanks for the compliments, Ram. And have at it, take whatever ideas you like. You'll certainly do it justice. smile.png

The painting process has started, but just a quick airbrush undercoat on a test figure. I need to pick up some thinners before continuing. That said, I think I'm in love with Vallejo's German Panzer Grey. Beautiful color.

Here's my latest build. This fella will be included in one of the Tactical squads (not a separate support squad), which isn't game-legal, I know. This is to demonstrate Guilliman's hasty reconstruction of his Legion in the aftermath of Calth and the implementation of some theories he's been developing for the Codex to allow for more flexibility. The newly recommissioned 81st Company would be one of the first to effectuate these changes.

Please, let's just take a moment to admire the unadulterated beauty that is the meltagun. Was trying to capture the moment he's just spotted an enemy and is about to engage.

Ludo: Thanks man, glad you like.

Anaziel: Tak! The legs are from the MK IV Legion Heavy Support squad.

Laborious: Thank you. I'll try to continue showing some more minor Codex initiatives.

jimmy: Appreciate that, man. I sold my soul to FW, much less pressure after doing so. ;)

I forgot to take pics of this guy and he's been "done" for a while now. I think the greenstuff will blend much better after paint. His namesake is drawn from a fellow frater who has been a huge inspiration behind me starting my own Ultramarines. rolleyes.gif

Anaziel was one of the first Ultramarines in the 81st Co. to be honored with a suit of the newly fabricated "Praetor" pattern power armor. A highly composed warrior, Anaziel has recently earned the Company's record for longest survival rate within an Astartes-sprung killzone - as demonstrated in his actions on Nuceria.

This is one of those figures I had a real tough time photographing. The main thing I wanted to convey with this guy was that striding into battle look. Hopefully a painted version will turn out some better images. If you look closely, the small dark streak on his sword arm is my blood. Xacto knives are fickle creatures.

Oh I feel you. I don't use any red paint for my Flesh Tearers, if you catch the hint!

it's just amazing how characterful you make each marine look, despite them wearing helmets. Do you have a plan for how the models will look before starting to assemble them, or do you just do what comes to mind as you go along?

Courage and honour!

That.head. Where is it from?!? Specifically, brother Bannister

Awesome conversions so far, full of charaacter

Thanks Blind, Tullus' head is from the new Lord Executioner model.

Appreciate that, Entei. I don't really plan out the models. Sometimes I start with an idea in mind that I try to emulate, other times it's just a matter of tacking certain pieces together and creating movement or a specific pose.

Do you guys just ever have a bad hobby day?

My day has been spent reading recipes on painting Ultramarines, buying non-Citadel paints from the closest hobby store, finding out I'm not a fan of said paints, missing some of GW's discontinued colors... yadda, yadda.

It's been a demotivating day. It's been a waste of time. This hobby isn't suppose to add to the stress of real life. laugh.png

I thought I'd have a test mini to show but I've found out that my OCD habits on the modeling side of the hobby have started to bleed over into the painting side. I can't find the right hue I've had in mind. I'm not incredibly happy with the selection of Citadel blues these days, but I don't see any other ranges doing a better job.

Ugh. Pedantic :cuss mode over.

Any recipes you could recommend for some dark, gritty Ultras?
