our_baz
The new releaees from FW are really pulling me towards starting a 30k sallies army. Once vulkan drops i think that will send me and my wallet over the edge Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280220-salamanders-and-successors-army-showcase/page/3/#findComment-3757500 Share on other sites
grand_master85
I know this is technically for 40k, and not 30k armies, but I'm going to be using my 30k marines as 40k guys in a local tournament soon. Here's a few of my guys. Oh, and the Lord of Drakes himself :-)Vulkan, Primarch of the Salamanders: Praetor: Pyroclasts (I'll be subbing these in for Sternguard Heavy Flamers): Contemptor: Tactical Squad and Rhino: our_baz, Uprising and Nocturne Noble 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280220-salamanders-and-successors-army-showcase/page/3/#findComment-3766657 Share on other sites
our_baz
Love the work Grand Master! Really lovely paint scheme. I do like sallies with the darker greens. The Vulkan model is pretty awesome you really have done him justice. My wallet wont thank me but 30K sallies will probably have too happen. Question for your Praetor what did you use for the conversion? I can see the Dark Elf Corsair cloak, but I cant picture the rest. grand_master85
Baz - Do it! There really aren't enough 30k Sallies players :-( I'm planning on doing about 10k of them, have 3k so far. I'm planning for around 2,500 pts of my army to be solely Fire Drakes :-)Yeah, I like the varieties of schemes that people have used, but personally, I'm not as keen on the 40k green, and much prefer the more camoflage green that FW have in the Horus Heresy books. The Praetor is just a combination of parts from the FW range, really.Legs - Legion mk II Tactical MarineChest - Mk IV Praetor setShoulder Pads & Backpack - Legion mk III Tactical MarinePower Fist - Pyroclasts setHelmet - Salamanders Upgrade KitShield - 2012 Event Only Boarding Captain our_baz 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280220-salamanders-and-successors-army-showcase/page/3/#findComment-3766749 Share on other sites

grand_master85
Thanks chap :) Vulkan, the praetor, and Pyroclasts are all complete. I have yet to finish the tacticals and Rhinos. In fact, have some pictures of my Volkites squad I'll post up (I'm going to sub them as plasma cannons most likely) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280220-salamanders-and-successors-army-showcase/page/3/#findComment-3766842 Share on other sites

Haven't seen that before. Nice conversion. You are right I should do a 30k sallies to dovetail with my 40k sallies. All these new FW sallie models are stunning, I will have to start a force (maybe even start playing again??). grand_master85
Thanks chaps! Here's the scheme as it stands, if anyone is interested. Green armour: Base - 1:1 Castellan Green and Caliban Green Wash - 2:1 mix of Athonian Camoshade and Lahmian Medium Layer - Castellan Green Glaze - 2:1 Waywatcher Green and Lahmian Medium Highlight 1 - Loren Forest Highlight 2 - Elysian Green Shoulder Pads: Base - Army Painter Matt Black Highlight - 1:1 of AP Matt Black and Mechanicum Standard Grey Gold Trim: Base - Warplock Bronze Wash - 2:1 Army Painter Strong Tone (or Agrax Earthshade) and Lahmian Medium Layer - Runelord Brass Wash - above mix again Highlight - Ironbreaker I think. Or Leadbelcher, can't recall which. Legion symbol: Base - Ceramite White Wash - 1:1 Army Painter Dark Tone (or Nuln Oil) and Lahmian Medium Highlight - Ceramite White Flames - I either blend these up each level or drybrush, depending on the size of the flames. Start with: Mephiston Red 1:1 Mephiston Red and Blazing Orange Blazing Orange 1:1 Blazing Orange and Yriel Yellow Yriel Yellow 1:1 Yriel Yellow and White Scar White Scar The flames should be darker at the top and down to a very few white dots at te base of the flames. ben rolls 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280220-salamanders-and-successors-army-showcase/page/3/#findComment-3767108 Share on other sites

grand_master85
Here's the tester for Fire Drakes. Not quite complete, need to add the brown wash to the shield and darken the silver on the hammer. Also think that the flames underneath the drakes head should be painted as flames as well and not just bronze. Was undecided on the flames to start with. I know the Forge World scheme is a bit different but as they're called Fire Drakes, I deemed it prudent to paint some actual flames on them! Although it has been noted that the red shield makes the scheme look a bit Christmassy as well, so might have to make it a lot darker red (was more trying to tie the colours in with Vulkan as these guys are his bodyguard). ben rolls 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280220-salamanders-and-successors-army-showcase/page/3/#findComment-3771488 Share on other sites

Xisor
Excellent stuff, the models themselves look to be amazing kits - you look to have done them much justice! I can sympathise with the red-scale though. Difficult to say what would work to lessen the effect, much darker in the crevasses with lighter/more-bone-y ridges and bumps? Still work with it being reds, but highlighting the scale nature rather than the current bright (seeming) mono-colour? our_baz
The red scales are good not xmassy at all. I use a similar colour of my firedrakes in PA. In use gw red base paint (can't remember name sorry) then generous red wash , then highlight, scab red, blood red. Theres a pic in my gallery. grand_master85
The squad is pretty much finished now, except for painting the chains and fangs on the shields/torsos, adding highlights to the bronze and finishing the edge highlights on the green armour adn the bgases. Very pleased with them. I must apologise for somewhat taking over this thread! Anyways, her are the Firedrakes (who I will use as bog standard Hammenators in regular 40k games) and Papa V himself.
