So, staring a joint thread for these characters as we work away on them...

Chaplain, Librarian and Belial!

To start things off here's the chaplain, his armour is complete however he will be receiving a jacket and a crotch blanket to fill the space in, bulk him out and give freehand opportunities... may also add a banner not sure yet!

Here we have Belial in progress. Armour is nearing completion, and he will also have a jacket and crotch blanket. This will help tie the characters together more.

@Melice, Absolutely, I cant wait to see the clothing on them!!

@JeffTibbets, We use magic sculpt the most for epoxy work, but we often work in sculpey when we do full sculpts. The process is your own, you invent it, no one can teach you how to sculpt because sculpting is alot about the touch and understanding the shapes you are creating.

Study anatomy, real life, and get some tools (a piece of wood and flattened nails works!) some putty, and go at it!!

Also, build shapes up with small bits of putty at a time, if you try and make the whole shape at once it can be difficult to work with.

An update!

Belial Progress:

Add some putty for support(we used sculpey)

Add on milliput+GS mix, smoothen with brush

Bulk out and form folds and shapes by adding small amounts of putty gradually.

Same Deal for the chaplain!

Here's the front shot with the crotch blanket in place

This time for the coat portion we work off an existing piece of plastic!

Here you can see the coat added and now we are roughing in the putty to make the rest of it

@maeve, the sculpey is just for support while the epoxy putty dries. its removed after. We do full sculptures in sculpey with no plastic or meltable parts attached, unless they are added after baking.

As for the bases, to be honest, its just broken off chunks of corkboard glued together with a bit of putty for filling the cracks, and then we use sandy dirt from the garden mixed with some of GWs larger rock pebbels and other such things... creates a nice blend and nice depth variation so drybrushing and such looks better.

@disruptor, we actually have two dremels, there's a mini handheld version, and then the normal bigger version. the smaller handheld one(it sits in your hand like a gun) is much easier to handle and more recommended, its also wireless.

@geektom, the ratio depends on what you are after, if you want it to cure faster or harder then add more of the blue/hardener, if you want an even mix, we generally go for 1/6-1/8 GS to milliput. The more GS the more sticky the miliput becomes and the less hard it cures. I usually mix the GS together first then mix into milliput, but as long as its well mixed it doesnt matter

Here are some more shots of recent action!

Just attached the plastic cape with some putty to the chaplains back

Some roughing in of the folds and such for Belial and Chaplain

Then we sand it down and carve it after it cures, add more and sand and so on

Adding some sandy dirt/pebbels mix to the base to fill in the cracks and give more texture

Some great work in here, but a few of the folds in those tabards and capes look way too hard-edged to be cloth.

Have you looked at GW miniatures? :P

The folds in some spots are a bit crisp I will agree, namely the back U fold(?), its easily softened and I will take a peak when I get back to the studio after dinner!

I actually disagree

On Belial the tabard is spot on, however on the chaplain i feel that the "v's" are the only folds that look the way they should.. the crease next to the hip armour on our left should be quite pronounced but is almost non existant, and in the bottom right of the tabard the folds are far too sharp and look unnatural imho.

I appreciate the comments, but please keep in mind, these are not realistic character designs, they were done in the spirit of GW, with a bit of looseness.

We do understand your perspectives and appreciate the time you take replying, even if we don't apply it this time, we may the next time! :)

@kage, I was intending to be a comedian, I hope you took no offense!

Its just sanding and carving that makes it smooth and crisp, if you look in some pics the base layers are rough :p

We will be starting to paint these bad boys today, so we should have some pics for Monday!

PAINTING BEGINS!!!!!!

Belial, mostly light layers on the armour to bring in the beige, lots more to do..lots...

The cape green is turning out nicely, colour is sorted but lots of blending left to do!

Action shot! And some shots of the chaplain, going for the glowing head effect

Will need to work the beige more, its too strong, and the cape colour is looking very nice I think smile.png

Paint palette for chaplain, (Malleus is the neater painter, Im a mess... photos later...)

Yea I love purple so I always try and work it in! A lot of our schemes use purples :)

The sanding makes a big difference, it makes painting the sculpt work painless!

My messier palette!
