Has anyone read this novella?  If so are they prepared to spoil it for me, are there any juicy reveals?

I'm guessing that with it being the biggest tank battle since the Battle of Prokhorovka (Kursk) there's gotta be some good stuff going down - namely Iron Warriors!

Got mine today and read it, wasn't bad but it's clearly the start of something, it's left wide open at the end. I hope it won't be the first of a special trilogy which cost £30 each, otherwise I don't know if I'll bother, despite trying to collect all the special novellas.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The first tank battle in was intense. The fog, the uncertainty, awesome scene. The inclusion of a certain third party will probably upset a few people, but I thought it was handled well. Now they just have to hurry up and release the next part!

Ok, its late, and I'm really tired, so apologies in advance if this doesn't make any sense haha.

One of the main characters is a kinda sorta Alpha Legion operative.
The main AL operative came to Tallarn long before the Iron Warriors, and the main character had been working with him to plot to overthrow the governor and side with Horus. He seemed to not care about the ideologies of either side, he just wanted to save Tallarn from sliding into decay.

The Iron Warriors showed up and threw a wrench in those plans though, virus bombing the heck out if it. Those that survive do so in huge underground bunker complexes filled with tons of tanks and spare parts. They begin to fight back, using ambushes and hit and run tactics to destroy as many IW tanks as they can. Eventually reinforcements arrive from the void, and a massive operation is staged to defend the Sapphire City complex. During the battle, the main character has to decide which side he is really fighting for...

The book ends with what I guess are the Cabal talking about their schemes...
"What of the other matter?"
"It proceeds."
"Is it certain that Horus will send an emissary?"
"He already has."

Im guessing that last part might involve the Mechanicum and Kelbore Hal

It's probly some Star Wars esque super weapon that will only exist for the time period it takes john grammaticus to destroy it in his fight to stop the Cabal.

Like all non-A D B 40k novels, the idea of the traitors or loyalists winning through martial might and strategy is just too unrealistic in a setting with super humans and aliens...

I mean hell, is it just me or is the Horus heresy turning into the expanded universe novels, in which only five or six matter and the rest are stories about weapons or plans that will win the war outright but always get destroyed in the last six chapters?

Well, i got it a few hours ago, and pretty much just kept reading.

I liked it, the plot twist was good and not to obvious.

Only thing that I disliked, is how apparently dumb space marines are against normal human tank crews...

Makes sense most pf the advantages that space marines have are somewhat negated in mechanized warfare and it comes down to learned skill which is why Lotara Sarrin for example is able to beat an Ultra Marine captain in space warfare.

But there is a long established Warp gate super weapon thingee on Tallarn, the good old Cursus biggrin.png

Effectively to looks like the Alphas had a subtle revolt well in hand when the Iron Warriors turned up (At random) and kicked off with a virus bombing, possibly due to being in a bad mood tbh post Angel Exterminatus. They hadnt counted on Tallarn having extensive underground shelters loaded with Materiel and people ofc.

Also, given how seriously they took the surface war at first (IE not at all) Im imagine most of the intial troops were either green or complacent after 7 weeks of no sign of any Tallarns.

I dunno about the comparison to Star Wars. I gave up reading those novels in the late 90s, and they were 95% garbage back then, so I can't imagine it ever got better. laugh.png

However, this series has been off the rails for a while. There hasn't been a legitimate novel-length entry in the series since Know No Fear. Unremembered Novel was especially ridiculous since it tells exactly zero relevant story, and existing only to serve up Primarch Fist-Fight Porn where there is no resolution, and a convenient excuse for everyone to walk away more or less unharmed and fight another day.

Oh, and another Alpha Legion protagonist with plans within plans? It doesn't get any much interesting than that. Oh well.
