I've decided to get started on a preheresy legion. But why start with RAF troops when I can lead the project with something more... epic.

** So people know, yes I'm inspired by/shamelessly stealing this guy's work:

I start with This:

And then add That:

Then add These:

And maybe end up with something looking like Thus:

Then I just need lots of plasticard, some other fiddly bits and some legion etched brass things.

On a side note, does anyone have a good tutorial for fixing all the broken door hinges?

OK so based on pics and notes I've found on the Stormbird, I have:

* transports 60-100 marines

* underwing missiles

* rotary cannon under nose & wings (multiple?)

* TL lascannons on upper hull and under the tail

Can anyone help in confirming any of this?

Just seeing that original inspiration pic has almost made me weep with nostalgia. Old, old memories.....

Update!

After 2 hours of cutting and some language that would make even Khorne plug his ears, we have this.

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2014/001/d/7/stormbird_05_by_kasumidoll-d70dltv.jpg

For a cheap made in china toy that the doors fall off from a stern gaze, the three sections were seriously fused together. The funny part of it is I was standing over the ship with a hacksaw to cut it up for parts and I was thinking "how do I do this without messing the thing up".. then I realized I'm standing over the ship with a hacksaw to cut it up for parts so I can rebuild over it anyway. So this brings the design closer to:

http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2014/001/5/7/stormbird_06_by_kasumidoll-d70dm0v.jpg

Here is a view without the rotors in the way:

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2014/001/a/7/stormbird_07_by_kasumidoll-d70dm7n.jpg

I discovered that the fuselage under the cockpit is a perfect fit between the cargo bays. I mean perfect.. the angle matches almost exactly. I also discovered I don't have to fix the pins on the upper doors, since once it is all assembled there is no way the doors can physically open upwards anymore.

Thinking ahead, I'm wondering if one 1/2" acrylic dowel will sufficiently support this thing on the base?

A project like this takes a bit more planning than slapping together a rhino kit, so I'm testing parts for the interior.

Oh...oh this is just purdy.  My only thought on the interior is that maybe you should have doors on the top "floor" as well, and gun racks along the wall- different toys for different situations.  The stormbird is really something akin to a legend- a flying fortress that spews marines onto the battlefield.  Leave no stone unturned; add detail wherever it is needed.

It is time the enemies of man learned that this legend is not only very real, but very painful.

I thought about doing that, but there's two problems. First, I don't have enough of those bits to do eight doors. Second, the upper portion will be mostly concealed because the top bay doors won't be able to open. You will have to get your nose right up there to see anything on the top deck.

  • 4 weeks later...

This should show what I'm trying to fix. The pins are still in the sides, but the door was "ripped' out. I'm trying some sculpting putty from a Japanese site I got a while back.

If all else fails, have you thought about possibly just taking a chunk out of the door where you need it, and replacing it with platicard tubing that fits in that spot?

Really looking forward to seeing this project complete!

I hadn't considered that!

After much debate I think I'm going to take a stab at building the lost XI Legion. If nothing else it will end after a squad or two. At the moment they will "count as" Emperor's Children since I like their rules and I can use them as "allies" more or less with the EC I plan to build; this may change as more legions are detailed out (plus I could see them as Bearers or Ultras easily).

Using information from

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Two_unknown_legions#.UxAna4XLBiY

and the tarot information from

http://menducia.atspace.com/primarchs/X.html

I'm still brewing most of the fluff, but I am decided on the following:

1 - they will be Babylonian themed

2 - they will have golden armor with black pauldrons (Lion Warriors colors)

3 - they will have lion pauldrons from Kabuki MIniatures

4 - they will have flagstone bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures

5 - the primarch will be based on the Fortune tarot card

6 - the primarch's name will be Marduk

7 - there will be a lord commander Gilgamesh with his duelist Enkidu

The things that are still in the "maybe" phase:

1 - they will all have the master crafted bolter from the command sprue

2 - they will have a lot of influence from the Babylonian mythology

3 - they play with too much xeno-tech (possible reason for being removed from records)

So here is the fluff so far:

Homeworld - Dilmun (named for the Babylonian heaven)

Fortress - Uruk (a major Babylonian city)

This all came up from an idea from before the Heresy books of a fragment of one of the lost legions coming out of the warp thinking only a few weeks passed only to find 10,000 years passed. They would be a DIY chapter. Now with the legion info I'm leaning towards making a legion that was "lost" to time and come back in time to fight the 13th Black Crusade.  I was thinking that Dilmun was settled by one of the early forgeworld colony fleets that set up factory on the 5th planet, while the 4th planet is practically a paradise world (a lost Eldar maiden world). Eventually the XI primarch lands on Dilmun and is named Marduk after the peoples' hero-god. Like his brothers, he ends up running the planet until the Emperor shows up. Marduk is reunited with his legion and joins the crusade. At some point, he recalls the entire legion to strike out towards the ghoul stars to pacify them, but then the entire Dilmun star system just up and vanishes. Originally I was going to say it was a warp storm, but then I was thinking maybe the 3rd planet was some ancient Necron phase nexus or something spiffy like that. Somehow the artifact was activated, but was damaged or wasn't used properly, and malfunctioned, trapping the entire star system elsewhere for what seemed to the inhabitants as 200 years. They continued to train marines and build wargear for the day they would break free and rejoin the Great Crusade. Then the star system returns to its place and they begin scouting out to re-establish contact with the other legions only to find that the Imperium has gone down the crapper (by their point of view).

Now I know there are some who would say this lets him "escape" his fate as fallen, so here's the kick in the shorts. Maybe he didn't. Going with the idea that each primarch had a "wyrd" (one would be his statesman, one his executioner, etc), Marduk's wyrd is to be the Emperor's successor. Marduk accepted a need for faith in moderation, so coming back to find that everything his father bled for all pissed on and the Imperial Truth replaced with loads of superstitious hoo-doo wouldn't sit well with him. Added to the fact that all of his brothers are dead, missing or traitor, and the Imperium stagnating under the foolishness of the High Lords of Terra, he would demand his right as sole remaining heir as the new Emperor of Mankind. So does he fight the Black Crusade and prove his right, or does he roll his 250,000 legionnaires up to Terra to claim it? Savior or destroyer?
