Totem Pole

The motion captured with the flame,  and purity seals is really great (while the seals would have to fold onto themselves to blow like that, the effect cant be done unless sculpted) but it gets the vision across. Extremely well done, looking forward to more. Really makes me wonder what you could do with the new fantasy stuff..

Still got my fingers crossed for a Relictor marine.

A little shout-out to my mate.

Several times I've mentioned minis by Proteus - a friend of mine who introduced me to this hobby years ago. He's back after a long break from painting miniatures, and started a new blog which I heartily recommend to all of you, as I would describe his painting style as very similar to mine...except much better. And for proof of that, look no further than his newest miniature that you can see here - a Luna Wolves Legionary with hands down the most precise weathering I have ever seen on a 28mm mini. It looks as if he took one of those large scale, 3up prototypes that GW uses as base for producing sprues, and applied AVF painting methods to it.

You can see more of it (and other awesome stuff) on his blog at:

Wow you guys have a similar style indeed - equally impressive!

If I were to criticise such an amazing piece of work, I would say the scratches on the legs and backpack look a bit 'uniform' - but hey, there's no denying how awesome this is.

Both Proteus and I believe that people put too much stock into brush size and quality. We both use only Army Painter and GW brushes and never had any need for kolinski sable or the like. I tried Winsor series 7 once. Couldn't really tell what the whole fuss was about. The better snap of the bristles was the only thing that stood out for me (barely) as I believe it could help with painting freehands, but other than that there was nothing in the performance of those brushes that made me think of them as a kind of tool that will get you better results. Things like durability and quality of production don't impress me, couse A - that has nothing to do with their actual performance and the results they can provide. And B - for the amount of money those brushes cost, coupled with an irritating handling and care rituals required to keep them in top condition, I would rather just stock up on AP brushes and burn through them without care. I know Proteus painted the Luna Wolf using an old Army Painter insane detail brush.

We're not the only ones apparently. Nakatan, one of the best mini painters in the world (here's his CMON profile: http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/Nakatan?browseid=16529498 ), recently said on his blog, that the super fine details and textures on his work (for which he is famous) are done with cheap synthetic brushes.

Have to say, I bought the insane & psycho detail brushes and absolutely love them.

Even tried some battle damage like you do (but not nearly as good).

Only issue I had was getting damage to show convincingly on grey armour

I would heartily recommend both brushes.

Luna Wolf is ace but your Executioner is still my favourite model.
