It's a conversion of a standard Mk 4 helmet. I glued in the spikes, that I shaved off of some plastic figures. I smoothed the gaps with liquid GS. I also used Liquid GS, to fill in the grille vents, on the face plate, so that I could have a smooth and even surface, to paint on the skull.

Absolutely superb. I dont suppose you could share your weathering/damage/chipping techniques? I always paint my models clean but I look at your stuff and it makes me wants to give damage a go!

I think he gave some tips on that a couple of pages back - see page 4 post #92

  • 4 weeks later...

As always, excellent work. Though, I must ask this: do you ever paint vehicles or larger-scale models?

Never done any vehicle work, but it is something I've been thinking about lately. Though if I was to dabble in it, it would probably by with historical millitary models. For all my love of Warhammer art design, few vechicles in 40k ever captured my imagination. The only Imperial tanks I like, are some of the Forge World ones, and these are way too expensive for my wallet (especially considering how much better models I can get for this price, from the historical range). Recently, like many, I've been enchanted by the Imperial Knights, but those are too large and intricate, for my current schedule.

Then again, I've always had a soft spot for IG Valkyrie.

Had to take two weeks off the hobby, but I am back and the Scions squad is almost finished. Should be 100% ready tommorow. For now, here's the sergeant.

Marines Errant, a Chapter I always love to see happy.png Is the symbol freehand?

Freehand unfortunately. I say unfortunately, couse I botched it a bit, and it turned out sloppier than I would have liked. Can't correct it without repainting the whole shoulder pad.

That is a lovely paintjob, how did you do the blue?

Did you do the whole model silver and then use a clear blue on one half?

However you did it, that model is top drawer!!

I did the blue first, then added the silver, using masking tape as guide (it's not a perfect 50/50 divide in all places though, I still have some corrections to make). The blue is based around GW old "Enchanted Blue" (shaded with progressive additions of Regal Blue and highlighted with adding white), which is a shade I always liked, but I mixed the blue with a bit of Vallejo metallic medium. I eschewed the classic blue and white colour scheme of Marines Errant, for the new Forge World version, where white has been replaced with chrome/silver, and blue had a polished metallic quiality to it. The addition of metallic medium gives a bit of a sparkle to the blue tones. I also combined it with giving it a coat of semi gloss varnish. Unfortunately this effect doesn't translate well to photographs, as metallic and polished surfaces are notoriously hard to take pictures of. I might have to do some experimenting with my camera, before the mini is finished.

Finally finished the last Scion. Also made some small tweaks to the previous ones. Those bastards turned out to be more time consuming than expected. But I am happy with the way they turned out. The sculpts are such fine subjects. Will probably experiment with different colour schemes in the future, but only on single Scion display minis. Not touching a whole squad of those buggers again.

The figures are available for sale if anyone's interested (link in my signature, starting from 1£ bid)

Okay then. Back to the lone Marine Errant, I guess.

Cheers

Quick question: do You guys recall any smiling headsculpts, in any of GW miniature ranges?

I am planning a helmetless Astartes conversion, and I wanted it to sport a bit of a smirk. But now that I think about it, I cant recall any such headsculpts amongst GW minis. It's just a blur of clean shaven shouting, snarling or grim faced heads.

Well, Sigvald comes to mind, and that's it. But I know it can't be the only one. Any suggestions here would be much appreciated.
