Totem Pole
An exercise in quicker paintbjobs. Finally one that was a success, instead of another figure, that I keep on embelishing and adding details to, like an OCD case. This guy took me a day of focused painting. It uses the same techniques as the Black Templar I painted earlier, but simpler, quicker, less precise. With highlighting and detailing made mostly with instinctual brush-strokes and relying on muscle memory, rather than focusing on precison. Also, not as much clean up of sloppier brushstrokes, simpler weathering and no freehand. I think of it as a "lower resolution" version of that Black Templars model. http://i.imgur.com/VfGUITO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/btyJQdf.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285797-index-astartes/page/8/#findComment-3875253 Share on other sites
LutherMax
He looks very cool. I wonder if some of the larger scratches (like on his right shoulder and powerfist) might look better with more variation in the direction, i.e. not all going the same way? If I were to commission you to paint something I'd want the works, but if that's what you'd call your tabletop standard that is pretty epic. Argent aquila
"Lower resolution" LOL, i'd kill a thousand xenos to paint as good as that on my best day. Totem Pole
A quick paint test. Normally I paint my marines around the principle of edge highlighting, like the GW 'Eavy Metal team. But sometimes I also try a more advanced way of hand-blending, area highlights, as opposed to just keeping to the edges. However this style is reserved for single display models (like the older Scythe of the Emperor on the background photo of my page), as it's too time consuming and complicated for armies. Well, today I sat down and quickly painted this Dark Angel (or rather part of the Dark Angel), to see if a simler version of this technique could be done quick enough for squads. And I think - yes. So perhaps that's an option I will offer to clients from now on. Full disclosure - Some of the blendings on the mini are just slightly, slightly less smooth in real life, than on the photos (taken at different settings, hence the lighting). Looks good enough in hand, especially since it's supposed to be a look for a whole unit. http://i.imgur.com/aDlTVDI.jpg http://i.imgur.com/0uBFbZf.jpg http://i.imgur.com/X2C7F8u.jpg http://i.imgur.com/KcHAbEI.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285797-index-astartes/page/8/#findComment-3878888 Share on other sites
death given form
Jesus. That's gorgeous. Especially after you put all the battle damage on him. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285797-index-astartes/page/8/#findComment-3878924 Share on other sites
Totem Pole
Back from the dead. Part of the current commissioned DA tactical squad. The pics are a bit crappy, as the set was done on a borrowed camera. The highlights in real life aren't as saturated and contrasting. Also the varnish left some reflective glare that was picked up by the camera and overpowered the painted highlights, making the minis on the pics a bit too shiny and "busier" than they really are (especially the one without robes for some reason). I've added an impression of a cross-hatched, woven texture to the robed marine. One - to make it more detailed and realistic. And two - to bring across the point that these guys are not walking around in silky smooth fabrics, but rather in crude, heavily-woven, penitent robes. http://i.imgur.com/C0xShH8.jpg http://i.imgur.com/YzHespl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/pnluR3D.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TDzJZFN.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9aXIGAO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/HsJcxlq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7SPEEPu.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fkWp3z8.jpg http://i.imgur.com/1Rvc7Bz.jpg http://i.imgur.com/hvfN6TT.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZWGV79h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/OPcC1Ff.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285797-index-astartes/page/8/#findComment-3941197 Share on other sites

Totem Pole
Random question: Do You guys know any Space Marine sculpt from GW and Forge World mini ranges, that show the marines standing 100% straight. Practicaly any Space Marine leg part I can think of, is in some kind of pose, where one or both legs are bended at the knee. The only "standing marines" I remember are the fincast Masters of the Chapter, but the sculpts have ceremonial capes fused with their legs.I am looking for something that I could pose my conversion with like this:http://www.deviantart.com/art/Iron-Dragons-Marine-64638092 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285797-index-astartes/page/8/#findComment-3970750 Share on other sites
LutherMax
Best candidate I can think of the Master of Relics: http://www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Space-Marine-Captain-Master-of-Relics http://www.games-workshop.com/resources/catalog/product/920x950/99800101111_MasteroftheRelics01.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285797-index-astartes/page/8/#findComment-3970777 Share on other sites
sockwithaticket
Pretty sure one of the leg pairs from the Command Squad is standing fairly upright. Legs are slightly splayed, but there's definitely no bending at the knee or hip. Many of the new Tactical legs are quite upright. Totem Pole
Thanks for the tips. I had no idea that Devastator box had any uniqe leg bits other than the crouching one. Totem Pole
Right, Command Squad. I had a brain fart and somehow read that as Devastators. But guess what, I acuallty opened my old box of Devs and thereis indeed one pair of totally straight legs, that can't be found in tactical box :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285797-index-astartes/page/8/#findComment-3971259 Share on other sites

Totem Pole
Caledor Sky as base, highlighted over several stages by mixing in progressively higher amounts of white, with the final highlights having a bright ice blue look. After that the whole armour was given a thin glaze layer Caledor Sky mixed with some Lahmian Medium, and after that another one of 50/50 Caledor Sky/Kantor Blue and some Lahmian Medium,Shadow areas were darkened with a wash of Kantor Blue and Black (with some Glaze Medium), and then sometimes blacklined, depending on the place. Totem Pole
Had a bit of a mess in real life these past few month, but I am getting back to regular painting. Totem Pole
If the photos are looking good, then it's a pure accident. My camera is nothing special (Nikon D3000), I don't own a tripod, nor a lighbox and only use one lamp. And my photo skills and knowledge of equipment mostly boils down to "keep the camera steady". However I do alter the contrast and colours of the pics in photoshop a little bit, in order to bring the colour balance closer to the way it looks in real life, as my camera - depending on the chosen settings - tends to take the photos either too cool and blue, or too warm and orange.
