Flesh Tearers, the mammoth task of painting a company.

Hi there, so I have a lot of models and I need to start painting them, I am going to start using this to keep a record of what I have done to date.

Like the title subjects I have more than a a full company of marines, and all the vehicles an under manned chapter would have. This includes but is not limited to a contempter dreadnought, 3 land raiders, and a forgeworld Stormeagle.

So with out any further waffle, here is what I have so far.

First time posting so forgive me if images are not sized right, I will try to edit if I have made errors.

So after a unit of very red assault marines I decided to mix it up, so a pair of my boltgun death company got painted. I'm also working on a full tactical squad, I'm hoping to get that done by the end of the weekend probably along with a few more death company.

The following models don't have helmets on, which I think looks really cool when I build models; but I have very little experience painting 'human' skin. I going to try out a few easy ways my friends have suggested, using one or two colours and a wash. It doesn't look great but with nearly 20 helmet less death company to paint  I will be an expert in no time.

Also I ended up painting some Sargent banners and a company standard. That I need to do some lettering on. Any tips for that?

I think I also might change the way I am taking photos, the flash is a little over the top, but I'm struggling to find a well lit place for my pics.

Nice work on the standards, and cool use of the scorpion honour guard. I love that artificer chest and helm :) Sadly I don't have any tips for freehand other than a bit of practice on paper of what your idea or words are with the finest/smallest brush you have. Hold the model firmly by resting both elbows on your legs or table which ever is easiest. Also water/thin the paint down so it can easily flow and keep adding more paint every other letter or if you see it starting to run out continue with the letter your on, then go back over after putting more paint on your brush as if struggle to trace back over a half done thing which is probably just me and my weirdness.

I had a look on the web for you and some people seem to use fine nib pens like sharpies etc? which might be easier just seal/varnish after its done as they say it runs or smudges :) hope it helps keep up the good work.

So  I got some more of Seth's Honour Guard painted. The final member of the unit is missing a single shoulder pad, so that is a job for tonight.

I have all ready show cased the Chapter Standard but I'm very happy with it so I'm posting it again, along with the remaining three finished members a little closer up.

Yes these models use huge amounts from the Forgeworld Red Scorpions Honour Guard, those models are so nice I had to use them.

Above is the last member of the unit, just a bit more work to do on him (helmet and shoulder).

Cheers everyone, I'm really happy with how it's all going. Now I need to start slapping paint on to some of my tanks.

Problem is I'm not sure where to start there are so many of them, Upwards of 15 tanks and 7 more dreadnoughts.

  • 2 years later...

So i haven't used this in forever but I thought it was about time I posted a little more, since I have been working on and off on this army.

Well I have on and off painted more and more of my Flesh Tearers, and at some point they sold a book with a more specific guide to painting them. This new scheme was a darker deeper red than i had used before, previously i had been painting (especially vehicles) a very Blood Angels red with black elements. This change lead to the idea I needed to change a lot of the painting I had already done, and in part slowed the progress I was able to make.

But then I organised some games, and i needed to get an army ready so that is what I did, two thousand points of 1st company (which wasn't part of my original goal, but neither was most of the cool stuff i painted for my Tearers). I wrote the list knowing that it had a low model count and was very very different to any armies i had used before, but that i made a lot of the components to build up. This also came around the time of the 32 mm base. So an all 40 mm base (and 60 mm) got me over that hump, remember they would always be out of stock of bases?

So I did it, in only a few weeks I finished 31 terminators, 3 drop pods, and 3 Dreadnoughts. In that newer darker red.

So the terminators are standard plastic kit, and space hulk terminators and then the Captain from that Blood Angels vs Tyranids.

Not sure if I am going to take a picture of all the terminators together, I can't imagine that that picture will look any good. But I might post some pictures of other hobby things that have distracted me from this project, one of which was Calth and that whole thing....

10 points to anyone who can recognize where those battles took place?
