The Embrace of the Nails

My Legion is shattered, my father a monster, and I have mutilated my brain just to feel the bond of brotherhood. Now I am nothing more then a berserker, waiting to die, all I have, is the embrace of the nails.

Maxinimus Thrax, World Eaters 21st Company

A little side project I have started, I initially posted him in the Praetor kitbash or standard thread but after 3 months I decided to get him ready to paint. Im already planning a command squad to go with him.

Really glad I caught this thread !

That axe is just plain brutal with the MkIII and shield look, it really does fit this World Eater very well :)  I dare say the length of the axe overall is perfect following my previous comments.

Please do go and re-post the side profile picture once again upon my Praetor Kitbash thread.

Thanks guys, he was built a long time ago, but until I extended the legs he looked a bit odd, squat like even.

That is an amazing conversion!A perfect leader for a pre heresy World Eaters army.....Is the base model the limited ed. boardingmarine?Very interested in seeing how the command squad turns out. Thanks,Tom

The marine on the base is from the Angron kit I think, got it off ebay. There is a limited edition boarding marine helm on the base, that's belongs to Thrax, the idea was he dropped it during being under the influence of the nails, his holster is also empty for the same reason. I was tempted to use a larger base so I could spread things out a bit but decided to keep him on the normal size.

I undercoated him white this morning, and am hoping to at least give him a couple of washes later on tonight, I'm going to try and build up the white from an off white.

Thanks for the kind words guys, although I hope Phoros isn't about to give up :s

So paint. I want to get Thrax finished before I start on the command squad as I have a tendacy to convert conver convert, and never paint. Earlyish stages at the moment, I think the white needs one last thin coat. I decided to set the model during the shadow crusade (after some advice from Jaspcat and Facmanpob) which explains the dead Ultramarine. This works for me well as Betrayer is part of the inspiration. Also I'm working on Lorgar so it all fits. Anyway thoughts so far (I don't paint often, think about 5 models in 3 years).

Oh and thoughts on the metallics. In Betrayal it looks like Brass, do you think this would be a bit bright? Would Bronze be better?

You have a very nice blue. I'd say bronze is too orange-ish to work with the white and blue as a spot-colour. Go with brass instead. Look at this scheme:

Now imagine that with some blood splatter.

Just my opinion, your model already looks amazing.

I honestly prefer World Eaters with silver (well, gunmetal) accents, but you should choose what you like better. I'd personally make the 'jaws' on his breastplate red to match the legion badge and to add a little contrast, but that's just me.

Cool 3 different answers :D

The brass on that Contemptor looks really good, and it must say I'm tempted. Will provide a slightly different colour to brake up the white.

KofR: red is going to be my 3rd colour, the cape, helm plumes, legion symbol, blood....

Ok, went with brass, may have added a bit to much silver, so may give it a sepia wash.

On lates for the next few days though so probably won't get a chance to paint for a few days. When I do I'm thinking of repainting the Ultramarine, as I'm not happy with him.

Great start on the paint job!

I actually like the silvered brass, it's come out really soft and smooth, I would recommend remembering that one for later ;)  On the flip side, I don't think it contrasts enough to split the white armour and blue shoulder pads up enough to be striking, it looks to blend him in a little too much.  But then, I don't know what else you have in store for him yet, and this marine certainly deserves everything he can get!

For the UM, the blue looks to clash with the WE's shoulder pads, hence me mentioning the lack of impact the silvery brass has.  But I reckon that some shading, weathering, muddying and bloodying up of the UM would sink the corpse into the ground under the WE's feet and allow your hero to stand out.

Will be keeping my eye out for more updates :)
