Interval II: Fever Dreams

Unlike my brothers, I could still dream.

I dreamt of my years as a feral youth prowling the steaming jungles of my homeworld. The soft detritus of the jungle floor dampening my footsteps as I tracked my prey, the dense canopy of the trees above hiding me from the hungry eyes of the massive reptilian predators that ruled the skies. The spear felt good in my hands. I remembered that.

I dreamt of my years as a fresh Legionary standing under the great banner of my Legion. The collared hound that adored it standing tall and proud in the cold air as we stood tall and proud on the vanquished remains of some alien fortress. The bolter felt good in my hands. I remember that.

I dreamt of my days as a young officer marching among the disciplined ranks of Perturabo's sons. The cold gleam of the sun on the burnished plates of their power armor as they labored tirelessly to reduce their enemies to nothing but ashes. The endless clanking of countless tank treads as their guns smote all who opposed them. The sword felt good in my hands. I remember that.

All of that changed when we finally found our gene-sire on that worthless backwater of a world. He was not the general-statesman we had hope he would be. Not like the Lion or Guilliman or Horus. He was a ruined god of war, an avatar of brutality and wrath whose mind was aflame with the passions of the Nails. The new master of the XII Legion wanted nothing to do with his sons, the warriors who had been made in his image. The new master of the XII Legion wanted nothing to do with the Imperium, the empire he had been created to help conquer. The new master of the XII Legion wanted only to die with his Eaters of Cities, the only kindred he had ever known.

When the World Eaters asked for the Nails, I was not among them. The cold rationality of my own mind, hone by nearly a century of constant warfare, was worth more to me than the unrestrained fury that the Nails offered. Few of my brother-officers thought the same. Not even my old friend, Khârn. I could not blame them, for what warrior would deny himself the company of his brothers? It was my lot to command and lead, and I could not do so effectively with a mind clouded by rage. I did not feel the kiss of adrenaline that they felt in the pits. The only company I kept were those who either mastered the Nails or lacked them entirely - Vorias, Helvast, Cael.

Now I waited with my brothers for the Emperor to send His avenging sons. On the black sand of this world we would once again commit the sin of fratricide. I could see Torvan and Ixion, pacing restlessly, their lightning claws crackling with lethal energy with every eager twitch of the Nails. I could see Cael, ever loyal and faithful, standing at my side. I could see Helvast, always majestic and inscrutable, waiting in the shadows with a stillness that only statues and corpses are capable of, for he was a little of both.

We were ready.

Second FW order is now officially paid for. biggrin.png

I'm expecting the Praetor, Tartaros Terminators, more Cataphractii Terminators with new weapons options, Apothecaries, and some Mark II Armor. I also ordered Extermination.

Now for a little history... msn-wink.gif

A TALE OF TWO TRAGEDIES

The Rise and Fall of the Iron Devourers

Numeration: XIIth Legion, 3rd Echelon, 77th Battle Company

Primogenitor: Angron the Conqueror

Commander: Centurion-Captain Voss

Cognomen: [unofficial] The Iron Devourers

Observed Tactical Tendencies: Shock Assault, Close-Quarters Actions [space Hulk Purgations, Boarding Operations, Line-Breaker Attacks, "Forlorn Hope" Objective Assaults], Armored and High-Intensity Warfare, Anti-Materiel Operations, Attritional Warfare

Allegiance: Traitoris Perdita

ORIGINS: The Emperor's War Hounds

The story of the 77th Battle Company began during the fledgling Imperium's first expeditions to worlds outside the Segmentum Solar. For the XIIth Legion, it was a time of relentless expansion. Having already cemented their reputation as the Emperor's War Hounds, the XIIth Legion embarked on an accelerated buildup of its fighting strength when not engaged in combat, with recruits drawn from a half dozen recently conquered feral worlds swelling its ranks. Entire new chapters (later renamed to echelons) were rapidly raised, appropriately equipped, and relentlessly trained before being dispatched to the forefront of the Great Crusade.

At the time of its birth, the 77th Battle Company was a standard line formation numbering one hundred Legionaries of various specialties, one of several within the 3rd Chapter. Assigned to the 13th Expeditionary Fleet, the 77th took part in a number of campaigns alongside the Imperial Army, its warriors quickly earning a well-deserved reputation for their stubborn courage and frightening savagery. Despite such a reputation, officers of the 77th often showed a level of tactical acumen beyond what was expected of them. Thus when Legion Master Lhorke selected a handful of his best and brightest for secondment to other Legions, among them was a young lieutenant of the 77th named Voss.

Attached to the IVth Legion, Voss spent a decade observing and learning the tactics of the Iron Warriors. In time, he developed an appreciation of armored warfare that he had not known before. Voss watched as the IVth Legion ground their enemies - alien and human alike - into paste under the treads of their mighty tank companies and reduced supposedly impregnable fortresses and redoubts to rubble with the thunder of their massed artillery regiments. Voss often hurled himself into the breach alongside the Iron Warriors, his chainsword belching fumes and spitting gore as he demonstrated the XIIth Legion's prowess in close-quarters actions. When he departed, Voss borne the moniker of "Iron Devourer" and a master-crafted Paragon Blade, both courtesy of his impressed hosts.

TRANSFORMATION: The Coming of the Red Angel

When the XIIth Legion was finally united with their gene-sire in the skies above the cursed world of Nuceria, Voss had already attained the rank of Centurion and assumed command of the 77th. With the coming of the Red Angel, the newly rechristened World Eaters underwent a dramatic transformation. Regarding the organization of his Legion, the Primarch had little patience for what he saw as the decadent trappings of Terra. From that moment on, ruthless competition was to be the sole judge in the selection of commanders. With the implementation of the Butcher's Nails throughout the Legion, gladiatorial contests became commonplace. Although he never elected for the surgery, Voss proved to be a savage pit fighter, killing at least three of his brother Legionaries who had challenged him for company command.

His authority over the likewise newly rechristened Iron Devourers now firmly cemented, Voss set about reorganizing his company. Foes - alien and human alike - would be annihilated by a systematic methodology time and time again on countless battlefields. Instead of seeking to collar those among his men who had succumbed to the bloodlust of the Butcher's Nails, Voss unleashed them in the form of shock troops dropping directly into the enemy's midst to slay and maim with abandon. The disorganized foe would then be crushed by the armored gauntlet of the 77th's real strength - its roving tank squadrons and its troops surging forth from the holds of their transports. To Voss, war was not the exhilarating affair as it was to so many of his fellow World Eaters. Instead, his calculus of war was a ruthlessly efficient one.

BETRAYAL: The Whispers of Darkness

At the time of the Isstvan III Atrocity, the 77th was, in effect, a battalion-sized formation comprised of several specialized units in addition to a permanent line complement of some five hundred Legionaries and an attached armored company. As was the case with the XIIth Legion at large, a quarter of the 77th - drew mostly from the ranks of its tactical and heavy support squads - was selected to join the first wave assault on the Choral City. When the virus bombing and the subsequent firestorm failed to destroy the Loyalists, Angron flew into a rage and led fifty companies of World Eaters to the surface, intending to finish what the virus bombs had started. Carried within the holds of Storm Eagle gunships, Voss personally led his best assault troops into battle, making planetfall moments after his Primarch. The balance of the 77th would later deploy with elements of the Sons of Horus, Emperor's Children, and Death Guard Legions as the situation planetside devolved into a war of attrition.

It is unknown why Voss, a dedicated and respected warrior with more than a century of impeccable service, would turn from the Emperor's light. Although the truth may be permanently lost in the maelstrom of chaos that was the Horus Heresy, rumors spoke of the Warrior Lodges that permeated the hierarchies of the Isstvan III Legions prior to the reveal of their treachery. Perhaps Voss, always a closed soul who shunned the company of all save for the senior command cadre of the 77th, succumbed to the whispers of darkness within the confines of one such foul confraternity. The truth may never be known. What is known, however, is that Voss returned with the other surviving Traitors from the surface a changed man, his armor covered in the blood of his betrayed brothers and his eyes deadened. The 77th had suffered irreparable losses. Most tellingly, it had lost the bulk of its heavy weapons specialists - many of whom Terran veterans - as well as a sizable portion of its armored vehicles and their crews.

MASSACRE: The Iron Devourers Unleashed

The 77th took to the killing field of Isstvan V in a much depleted state. With most of its mechanized assets either destroyed or disabled (for there had been very little time to repair the damage), Voss was forced to reorganize his company yet again. What little remained of his heavy support squads were assigned to the lines of defense in the northernmost reaches of the Urgall Depression, while Voss himself would lead his Terminator elite in the anticipated Traitor counterattack. Immobilized tanks were entrenched in fortified positions so they could fight as bunkers, while those that could still move under their own power were relegated to fire support roles for the three hundred or so line Legionaries who remained. As was the World Eaters' custom, all Legionaries - even vehicle crews - carried with them a wide array of chainaxes, chainswords, combat blades, and other edged weapons in preparation of the hand-to-hand butchering that would inevitably result.

As the "Loyalist" reinforcements revealed their true colors, a single red flare shot into the sky from Horus's command bunker. As one, the four Traitor Legions surged from their bunkers and trenches to massacre the retreating Loyalists wholesale. As the warriors of the 77th tore into the flank of the Raven Guard, a terrifying change gripped them as it gripped their fellow World Eaters. For the first time in living memory, the draconian discipline that Voss had painstakingly instilled in his men dissolved in its entirety. It can be said that the hateful pulses of the Butcher's Nails temporarily overwrote all senses, including that of self-preservation. Even the most level-headed veterans of the 77th gave in to the bloodlust, Howling like wild beasts, they hacked at their enemies with groaning chainswords that had long since lost their teeth or pounded on them with battered bolters that had long since fired their last round. Some reports even indicate that the World Eaters, lost to the madness of the Butcher's Nails, engaged in the barbaric act of cannibalism. It was as if some unspeakable darkness within the Iron Devourers, repressed by decades of imposed order, had been unleashed to horrific effect. It was a frightening portent of things still to come.

Thank you for the compliment brother. May my World Eaters be a match (paint-wise) for your Sons of Dorn on the walls of the Imperial Palace! :D

If A D-B writes the final duel between Khârn and Sigismund, I will shed manly tears.

I have made some changes to my painting technique. Whereas previously I used a 50/50 ratio of paint and distilled water, I now use a 25/75 ratio in hopes of bringing out a richer color. I also watered down my wash somewhat so not to make my models too dark. The results are as below. Yay or nay, brothers?

That is something I have noticed as well. My technique now is to apply the blood smears before the wash layer. The dark wash does a wonderful job of darkening the effect.

Unknown Veteran Legionary, Caleston Tactical Squad

Shown here as he appeared on the 21st day of the World Eaters' 98-day hunt for the surviving Loyalists in the wasteland north of the Urgall Depression, this Legionary belonged to one of the veteran sections incorporated into every tactical and assault squad of the 77th Battle Company. Having exterminated the few Imperial Army units that had managed to flee the bloodbath of the Dropsite Massacre, this Legionary joined one of the many World Eaters death squads canvassing the area, slaying all he found with indiscriminate abandon. Note: Mark II "Crusade" armor and Phobos-pattern bolter with chainblade attachment in common usage by the XII Legion throughout the first half of the Great Crusade, with substantial numbers held in reserve at the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. Bronze faceplate indicating veteran status.

Secutor-Sergeant Cael, "Peacemaker", 77th Battle Company

[pict-capture: Scouring of the Great Coastal Union, Purge of Nuceria]

A Terran Legionary recruited into the XII Legion before the War Hounds' first extrasolar campaign, Cael was formerly a Centurion of the 34th Assault Company. Condemned of an unspecified crime involving insubordination, Cael's sentence of execution was eventually commuted to one of demotion. Serving as a Destroyer in the 77th Battle Company, Cael was expected to die in battle yet lived to defy the odds time and time again, surviving where all others fell. "Peacemaker" as he was known then, Cael was eventually elevated to the rank of Secutor-Sergeant, leading the company's veteran Terminators. Fiercely loyal to Voss, who permitted him to earn back his rank through merit, Cael was a constant presence at the Centurion-Captain's side. Despite having elected for the forbidden surgery, Cael appeared to have mastered his Butcher's Nails implants to such a degree that he could willfully control when - and upon whom - he unleashed their fury. Upon the damned world of Isstvan III, Cael committed himself to ruthlessly hunting down his former brothers, doing them the honor of killing them face-to-face. Note: Tartaros-pattern Terminator armor newly issued to the XII Legion. Tigrus-pattern combi-bolter and personalized power sword. Bronze World Eaters iconography on left pauldron denoting elite status. War Hounds iconography on left greave indicating long service.

Relict is back in business. The final third of the 77th Battle Company has arrived - 10 assault marines, 20 tactical marines, all the associated weapons and accessories for them, two Sicaran tanks, and one Spartan assault tank.

The leftover Praetor, Centurion, and standard bearer will likely be painted as Ultramarines. What good is an army of World Eaters if they do not have a worthy adversary to face?

Perhaps it is.

The Mark IV assault marines have been painted and added to the army. The gaps are there for the formations that are still in those FW zip-lock bags...

The Mark V assault marines are next.

They look awesome all together, Relict!

Your assault Sgt has to be my favorite so far. It looks like he straight up headbutted someone's face off ^_^

Keep up the good work buddy! thumbsup.gif

Thanks for the compliments.

I gave the assault sergeant the "Sarum-like" helmet from the kit to set him apart from his peers, as if his two giant lightning claws didn't do that already.

The kit was a joy to build and paint. I especially like how FW made sure that each marine has a full kit - chainsword, bolt pistol, holster, pouches, and grenades. To that I added one melta bomb per marine, in keeping with the rules.

The last of the assault marines being worked on right now. Just two short of a 15-man squad now.
