@Idlem: Thank you Brother. I'm not a fan of the Scion colours myself.

Now. I have just finished my first AM match, facing off against Daemons. My main goal was to test out several new units.

These units were mainly:

-Bullgryns, in a squad of 6, with 3 equipped with mauls. Escorted by a Priest for extra punch.

-The Wyvern. I brought a single one.

-Scions. Comparing them vs. the old Stormies.

-Tank Commander. I brought one in a Punisher, with an Eradicator escort.

-Techpriests. I brought 2. One had Servitors for repairs, the other one joined a Veteran squad in a Chimera.

I also wanted to test out the new orders.

So. Long story short: I lost. Badly. Sometimes, the dice don't agree with you, I know. But I must have failed around 60% of my orders, not counting the ones I lost with an early "Incompetent Command" roll.

My Vendetta refused to arrive, I rolled 2 ones where I needed a two. It arrived at T4. dry.png

Then my scatters were horrible, my Deathstrike, which aimed at a really large concentration of Bloodletters and Daemonettes, scattered 6" (after Bs) and only killed 6 guys.

Add that to him rolling his saves really well, and you can imagine how it went.

So, about those new units:

The Wyvern: This thing covered itself in glory today. It's first barrage decimated a unit of daemonettes, killing 10-12 guys. It kept up this efficiency throughout it's life, which was ended at T4 by a Bloodthirster. I'm definitely getting one of these. Maybe 2.

The Bullgryns: Surprise! They're a decent unit! Not only did they hold their own against a unit of Seekers, but they actually tore them apart. When supported by a priest, you can get these guys re-rolls to hit AND to wound! Incredible. I did lose mine when I got a little overconfident with them and engaged a Bloodthirster. blush.png However, I am including this unit in most of my lists. They're cool, tough and pack one hell of a punch!

Techpriests: Praise be to the Machine God! I love these guys. I loved them before, and I love them even more now. PotMS on Guard Tanks? wub.png Cheap and really efficient. Also consider that they gained the Independent Character rule! So throw them into a Guard squad escorting a Leman.

Ratlings: Shoot and Scarper is handy, mainly to get away from stuff that wants to assault you. It saved mine from one assault!

Orders: I'm a bit torn on this one. Most stayed the same, so no problems there.

My main problem lies with "Bring It Down!" which, as you know changed. Now, this match, against my main opponent, demonstrated the amount of FMC's my group has. He brought 4 today. (2 Thirsters, 2 Princes). The last thing my HWS's needed was a re-roll to wound for these. They needed that Re-roll to hit! And losing that tore away alot of the efficiency they had against Monsters. Don't get me wrong, for Heavy Armour (AV12+) the new "Bring it Down!" got better.

I do want to draw attention to "Forward for the Emperor!" which is cool. It gives mobility to, for example, Heavy Weapons teams.

-Also! Even Platoon Commanders order at 12" now. Awesome. biggrin.png

Company Command Squads: The loss of Bodyguards really hurts. Basically means AM Warlords are a free points. The rest is alright.confused.gif

So in short: I'm pretty happy with the changes. It'll take some work, but I'm trying to get my Guard away from the crutch that is the Aegis Defence Line.

Plans for upgrading/improving the Golgothans:

-Plasma Veteran Squad.

-Executioner with full complement of Plasma

-Wyvern. Maybe 2. Or 3....happy.png

Thanks for sharing this report on how the new stuff fared. The Wyvern sounds like it's the bee's knees. Glad to hear the Bullgryns are effective too. I personally don't have any plans on using them -- Ogryns just never really did it for me -- but for those who do like Ogryns, I am glad to hear that they may be more useful now.

You mentioned that you brought Scions to compare them to the old storm troopers? How did they do for you and what are your thoughts so far, despite the small sample size? Likewise the tank commander, how did you find him?

Re: pain schemes, I personally quite like the Scions (55th Kappic Eagles) paint scheme ... on Scions.

The Scions did alright. They didn't really get a chance to shine as Hot-shots are basically shorter ranged lasguns vs Daemons. Although they do make a good pairing with the "Bring it Down!" order for Monsters. I seem to recall they did score a wound or two. He probably saved them though. His saves really were amazing. He made a little over half his total saves over the game, with most of these being 5++.

-The Volleyguns do seem cool though. I lost one a bit early due to some flamers, which actually wiped out the entire squad, save the second Volleygun, who momentarily retreated, but eventually stood his ground, and resumed firing. All in all, with the cheaper cost, and the awesomness of the Volleyguns, I think I'm going to keep these guys. Pending further testing offcourse. laugh.png

The Tank Commander was usefull really. I used his split-fire order to illuminate 2 targets in the first Turn, and used the same one a couple more times. The other ones weren't usefull vs. Daemons. I can imagine Strike and Shroud being helpfull against shooty armies, but not for Daemons. In all, I mainly did it to get a Bs4 Punisher, as we generally double FOC's I rarely get my heavy slots filled completely.

EDIT: I just realized something. During the combat between the Bullgryns and the Thirster, my opponent completely forgot about the ridiculous Smash rule. So he probably could have insta-killed them all in 2 turns, give or take. Which adds to my point: do not engage MC's in CC. Not with Bullgryns (or Ogryns, for that matter). Unless you use nasty stuff such as Concussive and the like. Then it might work.

Ogryns are bully units, find something that will struggle against them and get face pulping. We're a shooting army after all!

I'm looking forward to using this codex with what I'm hearing, I think it'll be as good as the last one with all the options :)

Ah, yes, Psykers. Did I mention my Guard is currently on a Crusade with the Black Templars? I'm a no-psyker kind of guy. (well, actually more of a BURN THE WITCH!-person, but details, details.)

I should explain: I really don't like Psykers, and Psychic powers. I'm into sci-fi and fantasy, but the idea of what is basically Science-y Magic-in-space isn't one I like. Which is why my Guard never have, and never will, use Psykers, and part of the reason I started Templars.

I think the Codex is at least as good as the last one. I'm really looking forward to play more often, as I attribute this loss completely to the dice, no tactical errors were made, and defenitely no mistakes..... ph34r.png

No problem. teehee.gif

I've been playing around with the AM codex, writing up lists, thinking of ridiculous combo's. (TH/SS Termies escorted by a Priest anyone? Who want's to re-roll succesfull saves?)

So the next game I'm going to do is one of the first games I'll ever play with allies.

Now I actually wanted to get alot of vehicles in this list, so bear with me.

HQ:

CCS-various upgrades, Navy officer, Chimera

Tank Commander-Punisher, escorted by an Eradicator both filled to the max with Bolters.

Techpriest

Techpriest-2x Servitors. (This guys is in charge of repairs, the other one is there to "Awaken the Machine!")

Troops:

Melta Vets-Demolitions

Flamer Vets-Grenadiers, Chimera

Fast Attack:

Valkyrie-MRP's (Melta vets here)

Vendetta

Heavy:

Wyvern x2

Battle Tank-Bolters, LC

Demolisher-Bolters, LC

Allies (BT):

HQ:

Chaplain-TDA

Elites:

Terminator Assault Squad (7)-4xTH/SS, LRC-MM (Chaplain here)

Troops:

Crusader Squad (10 Initiates, 2 Neophytes)-bolters, Melta, PW

Fast:

Stormtalon-Typhoon

Heavy:

Stormraven-Hurricanes. (Crusaders here)

Which brings me to the ridiculous amount of:

4 Flyers

4 Chimera variants

4 Lemans

1 Land Raider

30 Guard infantry

20 Templar Infantry.

biggrin.png

Now, the idea is that the Land Raider rushes forward, escorted by Lemans, literally creating a front line ahead of any objectives I want, blasting as much AT as possible (aided by the Wyverns). Then, using the Navy officers ability, my Airborne squads should arrive at T2 (as long as I don't keep rolling 1's.dry.pngSee last game.) and presto, instant air dominance.

Pro's:

-Lots of vehicles, and flyers, so I should be able to swamp the enemy in AV12+

-Chimera's should be relatively safe behind the Iron Wall of Lemans.

-Lot's of strong firepower.

-last minute air-dropped troops on objectives

-low amount of VP's to hand out in Kill-point games. (max. 20 if my maths is correct, and depending on Servitors counting as a seperate unit.)

Cons:

-Low number of Troops

-Horrible reserve rolls could mess up the entire plan

-MC's, especially flying ones.

-Alpha strike Drop Pods could make a mess, but I don't play anyone who uses Alpha strike tactics. biggrin.png

I think my regular opponent (Daemons) might hate this list. He literally has no ranged AT capable of even scratching my Lemans, he'll have to get his MC's in close, and that's where my Termies will be waiting for him! I just need to make sure all his daemonettes are dead and then the Templar deathstar should be free to roam the battlefield.

The only thing to possibly watch out for is MC's, but the Termies should be able to deal with those, and after my Flyers arrive I should be able to down one, maybe two per turn. It's an experiment, which is now possible due to the Tank Commanders allowing me to field 2 as HQ's. It's a rare thing for me to play a single FOC 3Kpts list. tongue.png

We'll see how it goes. I'll try it, and if it is ridiculously OP, I'll probably only bust it out on special occasions. msn-wink.gif Now to wait for an opportunity to play a game. Busy times lately.

Hi, guys, just sharing a battle report, featuring: Black Templars vs. the Golgothan 7th Legion.

Since I'm not gonna type the whole thing out again, the link's below:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276480-andhils-crusade-etliii-vow-3-complete-on-to-vow-4/?p=3692436

Some thoughts (Might want to read the report before reading this, it'll make more sense that way.)

-Wyverns. By the Emperor. The damage output is ridiculous, even against marines. Re-rolling to hit and to wound is nasty. the thing wounded >90% of hits it scored. Cost me a lot of Crusaders.

-Bullgryns: Yeah, I'm going to auto-include these from now on. Coupled with a Priest they can handle pretty much everything you throw them at, from Crusaders to vehicles. Loved seeing that, even if they were tearing through my Templars. biggrin.png

-Overall performance: Great, the Guard's still got it! and I can't wait to play some more games with them myself!

I've already mentioned this at the end of the bat rep, but if you've got any Guard specific questions, please do ask them here, just to keep the Guard stuff in the Guard forum, thanks. biggrin.png

The Emperor clearly showed who his true symbol is with the result ;) Despite telling everyone the Wyvern was going to be great (and only being smug about being right a little :P ) I've still yet to get any... I'll get some soon, the question will be if they'll be in time for the ETL along with if I have enough time to paint them for it! The Bullgryns are also a certain buy :)

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna get me one, but with 7th and the Unbound stuff coming up, the idea of a full Ogryn/Bullgryn Regiment is sounding very attractive, even if it's just for fun. biggrin.png

First off, however is that Shadowsword my Guardsmen keep ranting about....msn-wink.gif

EDIT: also, I forgot to mention that this was my first actual fight agains IG, and it was hard. Really hard. You know that their shooting phase is long, but it always feels like it's twice as long when you're on the receiving end! laugh.png

Absolutely! It definitely confirmed that the new IG don't need an Aegis Line. Which is good, because I want to turn away from the parking lot Guard. I want a semi-offensive force, charging forward, to claim glory!

I also learned first hand that the changes I made to my army recently work. These being mainly:

-Heavy Bolters in 3 Infantry Squad-->Added much needed punch to the squad, really felt that. laugh.png

-Techpriests and Awaken the Machine: Handy, and potentially really dangerous, could have badly mauled my side, if the rolls had been better. (but that's always the case.tongue.png)

-Wyverns, Priest and Bullgryns added: Said this enough by now. All are awesome!!!!!devil.gif

Also another thing I forgot to mention: the IG warlord trait was Draconian Disciplinarian. And boy, o boy! Awesome! woot.gif Preventing your Guardsmen from running away (even if it's only a 12" radius) is super-sweet!

So anyway, glad you guys liked it (admit it! I could have written that as poorly as possible, you guys are just happy that the Guard won!)

So, I hope to get more bat reps up later (probably post-ETL3, or when I've completed my vows.), and I hope to read some of you guys' exploits on the battlefield too! Share experiences and all that! msn-wink.gif

Guard winning is the best result :P I'm eager to get to grips with my planned new models, but I've got to concentrate on more immediate things - such as my ETL vow!

Guard never "need" anything though, just more models ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Greetings, Gentlemen.

Tomorrow is our group's official 6th-ed. goodbye-game. So literally our last game before switching to 7th.

We've decided on a variant of the Relic. It'll be a 4-way fight, comprising of Orks, Nids (most likely, possibly DE) and Daemons.

As you know I had the choice of 2 armies, and decided on bringing my Guardsmen to this battle.

Here's a quick rundown of what I'm going to bring:

HQ:

CCS (OotF, Plasgun, Banner, Medpack, Vox, PW, Carapace (including Commander), Chimera

Priest

Elites:

Bullgryns (6) (3xMaul & Brute Shield)

Troops:

Platoon:

PCS (PW, melta, medpack, banner, vox)

IS x3: (Heavy Bolter, vox, Grenade launcher)

HWS (Lascannons)

HWS (Missile Launchers +flakk)

HWS (Mortars)

Veterans (3xMelta, vox, Demo)

Veterans (3xFlamer, Vox, Grenadiers, Chimera)

Fast:

Valkyrie (Rocket Pods)--> Melta Vets go here

Vendetta

Heavy:

Battle Tank (Lascannon, Bolter Sponsons, Stubber)

I'm not aiming to be competitive, not that it'd be possible to be so when facing an estimated 5+ FMC's and 2 Ork Flyers, accompanied by masses of Orks, Nids and Daemons. It's a 4-way fight, so it'll be brutal either way.

My plan, kind of, is to sit back a while, and use my Heavy Weapons to scour anything approaching that objective, and try for a late cap with my Mech and Airborne Veterans. Offcourse I'll be using the Bullgryns as a mobile cover unit, and hopefully they'll be able to wreck some face in melee. laugh.png

I might get word of the battle here tomorrow! depends on how long the fight takes--> Long movement phases (nids/orks), long shooting phases (IG, orks) and long Assault phases (Daemons, Nids)

Emperor Protects!

So, just finished the game, and with dinner imminent, I carry word of the battle!

Firstly, the Ork player didn't make it, so it was a 3-way fight, which was hard. The guys know (and fear) my IG, which prompted them to send a combined total of 4 MC's at me, of which 2 FMC's. Sadly my list seriously lacked suitable quantities of anti-MC firepower (since I intended to scour the objective with lasgun and Heavy Bolter fire, which worked, btw!)

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Batreps/S1030068.jpg

Anyway. Special mention goes to:

Surprise! The Bullgryns again! Not only did they soundly beat 4 Bloodcrushers, but they also held of a Bloodthirster for 4 Fight phases. They even succeed in causing a wound.

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Batreps/S1030066.jpg

The Bloodthirsters seeming incompetence gained increasing disfavor with the Gods, causing them to punish him by dragging him back into the warp. (Warp Storm Table: Punished by the Gods!-->Instability at 3D6.)

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Batreps/S1030074.jpg

They don't let up, and decide to tackle a Flying hive Tyrant as well. Sadly, the remaining two Bullgryns, weakened by the fight, lose after a decent struggle (2 Fight phases, he challenged my Bone 'Ead, who also had 1W left.)

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Batreps/S1030077.jpg

The Legion saw the least action, considering both the Daemons and the Nids sent the bulk of their forces towards each other (blindly ignoring the Relic, for some reason!)

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Batreps/S1030075.jpg

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Batreps/S1030067.jpg

In the end, the Tyranids swarmed the objective atop the hill, but were cut down by relentless fire from the Legion (special mention goes to Friedrich Mûller, my Heavy Bolter gunner painted for the One for all challenge, he scored many hits and kills. And my last Lascannon Team, which averaged one wound per turn. Some of the best rolling I've ever done for Lascannons.) No-one held the Relic, but the Tyranids had slain the Golgothan warlord, and the Daemons had scored first blood (to be fair, he stole a kill from the Tyranids. It was my squad, but it was still funny! Alright, he also killed a Nid unit, so he'd )

Tied game!

So there we go, the last 6th edition game, and quite fittingly, a Tie! (even though it was between Nids and Daemons, but I had the most guys left, so I could have won, maybe.)

I know I made some mistakes, I forgot to disembark my Melta vets, who would have blasted the Flying Tyrant to bits, but hey, that happens.

Things learned:

-Don't forget to move/shoot/assault units. Very important.

-Bullgryns with a Priest is badcensored.gif . Expensive, but sooooo cool, and devastating. Really good unit, especially with the nerf to Smash. That'll make them even better in 7th!

-Ratlings with Bring it Down! I scored a full 4 Wounds of a Tyrannofex, 3 of which were Rending. Awesome.

-Forwards for the Emperor. The order for IS's with a Heavy weapon. It made my units more mobile, as I didn't have to choose between effective shooting, or moving. Probably my new favorite order.

-Mortars still got it. 60pts is cheap enough for Troops, and they're more than capable of killing soft Infantry targets. I killed 7-10 Daemonettes (can't remember exactly) with a single barrage. Also, they're cool, and your opponent won't look at you with that look of: "Oh hey, a Wyvern, way to cheese, bro!"

-Battle Tanks, with ample extra weapon. Expensive, sure. Forced snap-firing, alright, but still! They pack a punch unlike anything else in the army. Let alone with PotMS from the Techpriest.

Again, looking forward to getting some more games in with the Guard. Thanks for reading and C&C is always welcome,

Emperor Protects, Gentlemen!

A good read, a shame you didn't win the game but against such cowardly foes who tried to gang up on you a draw is a victory for you I think :) Your last two pictures don't work though?

I'm liking what I'm hearing from your battle reports - no not just because they're proving me right :P I need to dig my ancient Ratlings out to repaint, I've been meaning to do it for months now. I'm thinking this is the edition for the auxilia :) I just need to plough through my ETL Platoon so I can earn thinking of future projects! Keep the reports coming :D

Thanks. I too like how the changes seem to push me into a more offensive, mobile play style. I literally stopped playing my IG because the ol' parking lot got boring. This really makes me want to play the Guard a lot more.

I have to agree that the Auxilia are amazing at this point. Both do excellent jobs, and are worth every pt. Heck, Ratlings are still cheap as censored.gif!

Now I'm looking forward to some Ogryns/Bullgryns Warriorfish-style! wink.png

There'll be lots of reports as soon as we get the new edition (1-2 weeks, hopefully) happy.png

(NOTE: as far as I can see all of the pictures should work, but i could try to re-upload them should they remain broken.)

I've been playing mobile and aggressive Guard for years, I'll file this under "things I was right about" again ;) The pictures are working ok now, must have been a server thing or something.

I am very keen to get some Bullgryns, I've wanted Ogryns for years but the cost was off putting especially with the lacklustre rules. Bullgryns solve that for the most part, maybe I could do some as ETL vow 3 if I don't have enough time to do several tanks?

  • 2 weeks later...

So, time for a WIP from me!

I've finally gotten round to building the Golgothan invented Verrückt-Pattern Valkyrie!

Note that I'm holding the nose because it isn't glued in yet, I still need to GS up the gaps around the Gatling Cannon.

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/ETL%20III%20pics/S1032612.jpg

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/ETL%20III%20pics/S1032611.jpg

And also, more Bullgryns!

The Bone 'Ead is included in this squad, I gave him Nork's armor and combat Knife Machete. Rule of cool, more than anything else.biggrin.png

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Golgotha%20Crusade/S1032613.jpg

http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv325/Elcundil/Golgotha%20Crusade/S1032614.jpg

The little plaque in the back is something I made in my 5th or 6th year in High School (i'm hoping that's the correct American equivalent, I was 16-17yrs at the time.), using a CNC-machine, back when the Guard was my only army. I'm kinda excited I found it again.cool.png

And lucky me, I got permission to enter the Valkyrie in the ETL, as a counts as Stormtalon. Which is awesome.biggrin.png
