Post-Massacre Iron Hands - 15/4/14 Iron Father complete

Recommended Posts

Hey B&C community.

After months of inactivity due to work and university, I finally find myself with enough time to dust off the hobby-kit and return to my beloved war-band of Tenth Legion survivors. Although the fluff remains the same - they're a collection of survivors of the Isstvan massacre, I've decided to change the painting. Over the next few weeks I'll be adding into Clan Tellum* an Iron Father, a Praetor, several terminators, a tactical squad and a Sicaran MBT.

Having seen and attempted several alternative schemes, I think I'm going to be using an overall dark grey scheme painted from a brown undercoat, shown below in a rough form. (next to a very poor attempt at the brilliant scheme OwlandMoonGuy uses on his Iron Hands). However, I'm open to suggestions.

Work on the Sicaran, Bellerophon, has already begun. Compared to previous FW tanks I've bought, this had next to no flash or warpage of parts. Currently held together by blu-tac and friction. I'm planning for a 2-tone scheme, with a much darker grey being used on the raised portions of armour.

I was also eager to start work on the Iron Father. A heads up for anyone buying one - be careful when removing his body from the sprue. The crotch-guard is fixed to the sprue, and is very easy to snap off. In fact it did, shortly after I took this picture... Otherwise a nice model.

The rest of the stuff is sat around awaiting priming. The basing will be ash, rubble and the occasional bit of machinery.

So there we are. After months of looking at my army and not really knowing what to do, I've finally had the kick up the backside and re-started. Thanks for looking, and comments are more than welcome.

Cheers! H

*I'm lead to believe that this is Latin for 'bolt'. As I haven't read classical languages since I was 14, I'm willing to be corrected...

Thanks guys sweat.gif

Excuse my ignorance lionofjudah, but what is PP?

Still not sure on the overall colour. I'm tempted to go all in and use OMG's scheme, but I've done a few more tests - and I'm still not happy. My results just look too bright. (Almost like metallic Alpha legion). I'd like to use it, but I don't think I can pull it off. What do people think, dark-grey or attempt the OMG system?

Work on the Iron Father progresses. The crotch-piece did indeed snap off when I tried to remove him from the sprue, but thankfully the base-coat has hidden that. I'm aiming for a dead/unhealthy skin tone.

Here are the two test models. I've become a little stuck, in that I actually like both schemes and am unable to decide. I would appreciate input as to which scheme people think is the better of the two.

I suppose the alternative is to run with both schemes, but that would mean I'd have 3 in my army, including the original black...

I've continued working on Bellerophon. I've painted the turret in the 2-tone dark grey scheme, just to see how it would look. I quite like it.

So what do people think? Stick with the grey, or go for gunmetal blue? I honestly have no idea which one to pick. I asked my 2 flatmates (also 30K players), and they couldn't decide either...

Cheers guys, H

I like the blue/metallic shade - I think it's just different enough that it'll look really nice on a tabletop, and in your cabinets. And as the paint doesn't require much extra prep/mixing as a Vallejo colour it's certainly do-able across a whole army.

The dark grey-as-black scheme is nice too, many years ago I did a Black Templars army in a not dissimilar way, and it can be nice but it's definitely less striking? In addition, weathering can be tricky as it all looks a bit messy sometimes (just my own experience you understand).

If you do go for the grey scheme, i'd maybe hit the panels with a dark wash, and rehighlight with a lighter grey however (think Matt Hudson's Black Templar armies) to get that "extreme" edge. That can help take the muddiness away from the large flat panels on terminators and vehicles. Spot colour choice will also be crucial as it'll be quite a dark army overall.

Just my two cents tho - it'll look a great wee army either way. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks November, very helpful advice.

In the end, I've worked out a system using both schemes. The metallic colour will be for Clan Tellum's few surviving original Terran marines, while those who deployed to Isstvan (and escaped) will be in the dark grey scheme.

The fluff for Clan Tellum - the clan symbol is crossed spanners. (Unfortunately, I lack the photo-shop and fluff-writing skills that many, like Urza and IHF, possess)
The clan is pretty much a secondary Clan, made up of the left over of other clans. If a unit sustains too many casualties to remain combat worthy, the survivors are rotated into Tellum, and regrouped into new units. However, the clan does receive its own new Medusan recruits. As such, the clan can call upon a wide variety of skills, specialists and veterans. Due to the clan's frequent deployment in assault, trench and siege conflicts, the clan features a heavy use of MK III armour. In something of a 'fortunate accident', many of Clan Tellum were not deployed to Isstvan, their clan's transport ships instead being used to evacuate wounded or deploy supplies to the loyalists on the ground. Following the escape from the Isstvan system, the remains of Clan Tellum would operate on their own, hitting at traitor units where possible.

Iron Father Huwryn is pretty much finished. While my painting is far from A grade, I have to say I'm quite fond of this model.

Huwryn is the most senior-ranking member of Clan Tellum's forge to survive the dropsite. Deployed to Isstvan as part of a support unit from the armoury, he was among many legionaries to be evacuated from the planet after sustaining heavy injuries in combat with an Emperor's Children swordsman. Post massacre, and with Clan Tellum lacking their Iron Father or senior armoury staff, Huwryn would become the acting Iron Father of the clan. Overall command of the clan would be shared with (an as yet unnamed) Centurion.

This is the current state of Bellerophon. Very rough at the moment. If I remember where I left them, when build the sponsons will be magnetised.

The largest vehicle within Tellum's motor-pool not to be deployed to the surface, the Sicaran MBT represents the clan's heaviest armour to survive after the massacre at Isstvan. Although the vehicle was supplied to the Legion long after Ferrus took over, due to the crew being of Terran origin, the vehicle is painted in the X Legion's original colours.

Right, well that's it so far.

Cheers! H
