Ultramarines 2nd company

The next project on the books is a pretty elite Ultramarine force. It will consist of 2 fully magnetized tactical squads, a terminator chaplain, 5 man tartaros terminator squad, 5 cataphractii hammernators, Calgar and his honour guard and a magnetized landraider crusader/redeemer.

im hoping i can get some paint on the raider today, will only be the main body though as ive got to order a few more magnets.

Looking great so far, interior looks fantastic. Weathering is nice and understated. Noticable without being the dominant feature. Will watch this thread with interest

The ultras are way too powdery/airbrushy baby blue for my tastes.

Interesting take on the blue, and that interior is excellent! What do you mean exactly by 'oil pin wash'?

The blue isnt so bad Irl. Its just the camera phone shots under a painting lamp.  Ill see if i can can get a few WIP shots under a sensible light source.  The main coat is calgar blue and its has an all over glaze of guilliman blue, so should be pretty faithful to the colour,  plus in the shots it still has a gloss varnish coat for pin washing.  Once i have a satin coat on ill take a quick snap and post as it should calm the blue down.

A pin wash is a wash that will give me thin pin like lines.   after all the armour colours are applied i gloss varnish the models. i then thin some black oil paint down and just touch it into the recess'.  The gloss varnish doesnt allow the paint to go anywher but the recess' so you can apply it like a wash and paint will only go into the gaps.  Its a much faster way of black lining i suppose.

Cool thanks for the info. I have dabbled with oil washes but haven't had much success. I did use a gloss coat prior (and do for all washes) but think I messed up the paint to thinner ratio - do you have any tips in that regard, and do you use mineral spirits to thin?

pretty much the same as the video but i use gloss as there is less of the tidying he was doing.  The mineral i use is Migs odourless turpentine.

I also took some pictures without the painting lamps on in natural light so you could see the blue wasnt so light and chalky.

Added some chipping on one of the guys before i start batching, wanted to get a clear picture in my head how these will finally look.

Close ups are a bit washed out because of the light but they are so you guys can get in real close.  Next step will be grime, mud and maybe some OSL on the eyes, but only a light OSL. nothing too mental.

Wow they look really good. Usually I prefer black bolters but it looks nice with that lighter blue scheme, very oldschool.

Not much to report apart from batch boredom but to keep thing lively im going to jump ahead every now and then and complete a model from all the different armours that are knocking about ultramar.
