The Warrior Kings of Ultramar

So, wait for it... (cue victory fanfare music from Final Fantasy 7)

Finally, after what feels like years, a lot of false starts (and not to mention wasted money) I've actually chosen a legion that I'm happy with, cleaned and assembled a squad AND have actually undercoated something.

The Ultramarines...

Why the Ultramarines I hear you ask? Well, there are quite a few reasons.

1. The background - I've read all the heresy novels and I'm not ashamed to admit, I love the 30k sons of Ultramar - their honour, their pride, the tragedy at Calth and of course the way they come back from that

2. The colour scheme - Blue and Gold man, Blue and Gold... Say no more

3. Roboute Gulliman - Fighting without a helmet in space, falcon punching Word Bearer heads off AND putting his fist through Kor Pherons chest

4. Word Bearers - God I despise the Word Bearers, you can feel something for the other traitors, you can even pity Horus - but the Word Bearers... Evil, evil I tells you

On to the (poorly taken) pictures

Tactical Sergeant.

Tactical Marines (first 3 of 9)

And the obligatory Librarian

I've told myself I have to paint at least 5 marines before I can buy anything else from Forge World - It may be a long time before I place my next order...

Especially as I've just ordered Extermination... Hmm, Raven Guard...

Oh, and Mk IV all the way baby! (except the shoulder pads as you may have noticed already)

Cheers guys.

Modelling wise for 30k - Purity Seals, yay or nay?

The one Heresy book I read mentions them. Calls them "oaths of moment" and says that they represent the warrior culture and secular veneration of the Astartes. They basically scribe promises (ie. for vengeance against a particular foe, to support a battle brother, to return a battlefield favor to someone they owe) on slips of paper and glue them on with hot wax. Probably you shouldn't go overboard with them, because Heresy-era troops are just a little more sane and disciplined about their decorations in general, but they're a thing.

If I started 30,000, that sergeant would be the first thing I'd steal. I love the pose, the torso, the helmet, the power sword and its arm as well as the shoulder pads.

Pretty much a dead ringer for the artwork of the Red Scorpions sergeant in one of the Badab books, isn't it? Awesome model and great job on the posing, tho. I'm not an Ultramarines fan but I'm sure you'll do the XIII proud, keith.
