All parts are either magnetized or held with blue tack:

wish me luck!

So the Russ is primed (I paint with brush and palette which is slow but fun and effective) and I had an important question. How do you handle the tank when painting? Do you hold it with bare hands, wear rubber gloves or use something else? I've never painted a vehicle aside from my Knight and some Space Marine bikes and skimmers, but they have a base.

What recommendations do you have to prevent getting fingerprints smudges on the model?

Thanks!

A fine looking tank! Painting tanks is easy, just hold it where you must to get the best access to what you're painting. It helps if you plan it ahead a little, for example where you're going to paint compared to where you will hold it but it's mostly a case of just paying attention whenever you change your grip. I like to stick my fingers in the turret hole if I need to paint lots of different areas as it provides a lot of control without touching anything. If you're really worried about it you can paint it in stages, for example hold the hull and do the sides, then you can hold it by the sides as you do the hull smile.png

Remember to paint stroking in the same direction and build up the coats slowly and methodically and you'll have a nicely coated tank in no time biggrin.png

I personally hold it by the bottom, splaying my fingers so I don't drop it. Or hold it by the tracks, those are normally painted last. That said, I've got my colour scheme down nicely for these, so I can roll them out like a Forge World, (but can't afford that volume quite yet!)

I was just asking as the Battle Cannon Russ seems to be slightly meh, but still useful if you get a nice hit on some Marines!

I don't really play much. For me it's like the entry level Russ. I can add all the other weapons in the battle tank box, when / if the time comes to play depending on the enemy. I also have a Hammer of Cadia on order... so many more tanks will be coming.... smile.png

As for the colours... look at the Knight earlier in this thread!wub.gif

The money is sitting in my bank account, the courage is lacking because it's a lot of money but also I have four infantry boxes still sealed from yesterday :P

I will however look forward to more tanks because they're growing on me the more I see them on these progress threads plus I might actually be able to paint one - I lack really fine motor control unless I'm killing strangers on the Internet.

I'm pretty savvy on the ebay and bits sites... I plan to basically use what I need from that box (ie make 2 Hellhounds, and 2 of the Battle Tank) and use the extra chassis for something else (like Manticore or Hydra and Punisher Tank). Bits sites are amazing. You can really make your dollars go far.

For me it wasn't really courage as it was impulse... plus if you add it up, you're getting 2 tanks for "free".

Well... most of the arguments are rules wise tongue.png The Hellhound is a cool kit though, fun to build and paint and it has more painting options compared to other Guard vehicles thanks to the fuel drum bits. As sox said though - two free tanks. I could get the kit for £174... you could sell off the ones you don't want to an eager Guard player (there are lots) for a deal that you both benefit from. Everyone wins, the best kind of winning! biggrin.png

a quick progress report:

It's very early on, but this is the camo scheme I plan for my tanks. Will look better when second coat and washes/weathering is done!

What you think of the colours?

More updates: Weathered, additional colour added and a highlight of the greys: Still need to highlight the green bits and the treads. also need to add some battle damage especially on the plough. I'm enjoying this greatly!!

The mould line on the barrel of the battle cannon is driving me mad... any recommendations to get rid of it?

Agreed, it's really looking good - looks just like a camouflage scheme I used in the DoW games :D I like how you've matched the scheme across the plough too.

For the cannon I can't quite make out the type of line it is, so either some filing to smooth it would work or more likely some GS work? Rolling a thin line and putting it in is the easy part, what takes the time is smoothing it all out nicely.
