MrBear
Just have to love that FW resin (sarc). Nice ride the MKII legs look good. Well it can be a bit problematic sometimes. Got to say that I've been lucky though since there have only been minor things that even I can handle. Some very minor progress aswell: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0595_zpsmjxwgyth.jpg I did say minor... Might get a little bit more tomorrow though, or try to arrange a group pictures of all three claws so far. MrBear
Group pictures were promised, not the best ever taken but good enough I guess. My trusty kitchen table continuing it's side career as a 'photo booth'. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0596_zpsboi6gc9p.jpg 'Don't worry kids, First Claw and Captain Justinian haven't gone soft in the head and let Second Claw have any live ammo when they lined up in front of them.' http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0602_zpsryobdic4.jpg 'Here we have that likeable old wizard Bayaz advising Captain Justinian and his brave lads on where to set camp.' http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0600_zpszfubw7gz.jpg 'Grumpy Hathsin wants his place in the spotlight (figuratively speaking) aswell, he'll have to make do with being in charge of the barbeque for now. Well... some of the more "special" kids are in that group if I'm honest. A couple of them are a bit slow and a few are a bit "rough" around the edges but all of them have their hearts in the right places (someone's heart at least). I'm sure they will play nicely with you' Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291203-night-lords-33rd-company-the-mongrels-of-the-eight/page/9/#findComment-4209511 Share on other sites
MrBear
Things are (as always it seems) a bit hectic at work. Despite my username I haven't entered any hobby related 'winter hibernation' though, not that I had made much progress on the Rhino but even glacial improvements count as progress right? http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0605_zpshom2wmwh.jpg Nothing much yet as already stated, just the first highlights on the actual armour. These have to be refined, then there are the metallics, some 'wear and tear' and... Quite a lot left to do in fact but we're slowly getting there. MrBear
Coming along nicely. Thanks pal! It's somewhat glacial progress but at least things are moving in the right direction. And speaking about progress... http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0607_zpsi1xtjfms.jpg I've been experimenting a bit with making the Rhino look a little bit more 'worn', something I've never tried before. So brothers and sisters of B&C, what do you say? Too much? Too little? Do note that that there are more highlighting and shading planned, this is still very much v.i.p. Lord Commander Eidolon
Loving the worn look! I actually find weathering a vehicle much more fun than just doing a 'normal one' - although I general start trashing it at the start so I don't get too upset by chipping and denting the hell out of a nicely finished tank! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291203-night-lords-33rd-company-the-mongrels-of-the-eight/page/9/#findComment-4224403 Share on other sites

Cheers fellas! Glad to hear that I'm on the right track with things, work has continued on the other sides but not moved beyond this stage so not worth taking any new pictures. There is something else though... http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0608_zpsyzysqhsw.jpg It's mine, my own... my precious! I don't have time to do anything with this box until sometime next year I guess, but I couldn't keep myself from getting a set anyway. I'll need time to decide upon a Legion aswell to be honest, there are a couple of candidates. 1. Blood Angels. I can paint a pretty decent red and the sons of Sanguinius have held a special place in my heart since Bloodquest. 2. Sons of Horus. The paint scheme could be an interesting challenge, they have a background that's quite interesting and "Kill for the living, kill for the dead!" is a pretty neat war cry. 3. World Eaters. I like the paint scheme and they have an aura of tragedy that's very tempting. That's were my thoughts are at the moment but things might change... Whatever I decide upon there's one thing I'm sure about, they are going to be loyalists. They are not going to be 'perfect heroes' though, that wouldn't be much fun. They will most likely be more morally grey, just as my Night Lords are bit more 'puritan' than many other traitors... Ah, well... That's months from now anyway... Time to go back to that Rhino and see if I can get any painting done before sitting down to see if we can beat our Danish neighbours in football. MrBear
Well we won over the Danes (barely) and I managed to get a little bit more work done so this has been a pretty good weekend. MrBear
The Rhino is... finished. Normally it would mean that there would be an update in a short(ish) time as I write some background before posting the finished result. Not so this time as I still have Yarda, the driver, to finish first. Work with him has begun though so we'll see how long he'll take. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0640_zpsxlcmkthj.jpg Still very early stages as you can see but I should be able to get some painting done during the weekend... What? A sneak peak on the Rhino? Well... since you ask so nicely. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0636_2_zpsqg9x6guh.jpg It's far from the best picture I've ever taken but good enough to tease a little I guess. MrBear
Things are moving along quite nicely, I've been rather lazy today but have still managed to get some painting done... http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0643_zpsyjwiwjpy.jpg Just basic highlights of the armour and the start on the metals but it makes me cautiously optimistic that I will be able to finish him soonish (by my standards). And even though doing anything with the BaC-set is still a project for next year I think I have decided upon which Legion I will join... My imagination has whispered to me about the modelling possibilites if I combine the BaC marines, the FW-upgrades and the Tactical squad and chapter upgrades from GW. Therefore it looks like I will be painting the sons of Sanguinius in the future. Even though it will be ages before I can use it I couldn't resist thinking about some fluff so here is a little bit that I might use when the time comes to start a second plog: ”In the chaos of the battle I search for their leader. The Night Lords might very well break if he is struck down, their courage has always been a fragile one. It does not take me long, I see him standing near a fallen pillar, directing his men, trying to coordinate their efforts. I know this warrior, Tosarian of Nostromo, the Dark Jester to his brothers. A comrade then, a brother in arms, we fought side by side against a foul breed of xenos now cleansed from the galaxy. A traitor now, a friend no more. He sees me, recognises me aswell despite the many years gone by. He speaks, but I do not listen to his words. I do not know if he mocks me or if he offer excuses for his choices, but from a son of Curze it is probably the former. If he seeks to make me hesitate he is as mistaken as in his allegiances, I do feel regret for what I have to do but it will not slow me down. As I crash into him and thrust my blade through his body I sense his surprise, he did not expect this.” Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291203-night-lords-33rd-company-the-mongrels-of-the-eight/page/9/#findComment-4231257 Share on other sites

MrBear
Miracles do happen sometime, an update just days after the Rhino was finished. I guess I can be rather quick from time to time after all... ”In the pitch dark holds of the ship a beast was sleeping. It did not dream, it had no concept of the passing of time or knowledge of what happened to the galaxy while it slept. Those that had created it deemed those things blasphemous and dangerous for it to possess. It did not know that it lacked true sentinence, nor did it care. It had been created for battle and when awoken it's 'thoughts' was centered at this task. In a way it could be likened to the canines that had helped man hunt upon ancient Terra, it was loyal to it's master and eager to please when let loose alongside them. Such a time was now approaching as the sound of ceramite boots was coming nearer and nearer. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.--.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- ”Electricity surged, vital fluids were being pumped through mechanical veins and the beast was stirring to life. It had but a limited capacity to think but enough to give it a sense of self, an identity. [AWAKE/FUNCTIONING] it spoke with it's electronic voice and through the crude mind link it could feel the acknowledgement of its flesh-kin/driver. It had neither eyes nor ears but it's sensors detected other flesh-kin standing nearby. It roared it's engines in greeting and several of them slammed their fists against their chests in return. They were different from the beast but it felt a crude kinship with them, they belonged together. It felt anticipation, it was seldom woken without proper purpose, and never had it's brothers stood by it's side those few times it had been denied the joy of battle. [HUNT/BATTLE?] it asked to be certain. Astartes One-Ten-Thirtythree acknowledged once more and Rhino Thirtythree-One, designation Salute the Dark, opened it's doors so that it and it's pack could ride to war together. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.--.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- ”Smoke drifted through the rubble-strewn streets of the city as fires were consuming whole hab-blocks. The rebels led by Second Claw had pushed the defending PDF to the northern outskirts before they had run out of steam and it pleased the Terrans of 'Primus Pilus' to no end that the Nostromans needed their help to run their enemies out of the city. Salute the Dark had no understanding of the tactical situation or the details of the battle, all it knew was that that it was hunting and that it's flesh-kin was pleased, which meant that all was like it should be. They had recently deployed and were infiltrating the enemy positions while the Rhino was 'stalking' the streets, looking for troop movements. Normally something as big and noisy as an Astartes tank would be far from being able to move unnoticed but with all the noises and the chaos of a burning city in rebellion it was very easy to miss until it was too late. It sensed movement up ahead through it's electronical 'eyes' and prepared for action. The ragged remnants of a PDF-platoon moved out of the smoke and froze when they suddenly saw the Rhino just 40 meters ahead. [PREY/ENEMIES!] it rumbled as One-Ten-Thirtythree increased their speed and drove them straight towards the mortals. Some of them snapped out of their surprise then, in a most stupid way. Instead of trying to scatter they fired their weapons, doing nothing but scratches on Salute the Dark. [WEAK/FEEBLE!] it signalled as the largest group of them were crushed under it's tracks. One-Ten-Thirtythree laughed as it judged the quality of their enemies and the Rhino shared his joy when he opened the top hatch and gunned down the survivors. The hunt was not over though, there was always more prey to find so they pushed on. The Pack had encountered an entrenched enemy position and needed their assistance. The park where the PDF had chosen to make their stand had probably been beautiful once, now it was a war-torn shadow of it's former self though. Those trees that had not been transformed into splinters had been burned black by the raging fires and the craters and all the ash made it look more like an alien moon than the oasis it had been for the local inhabitants. The destruction had been a blessing for the defenders though, it had created a death zone where they could rain fire upon anyone assaulting them. It would be an almost certain doom even for Astartes to try to cross, that it meant death for any mortals was obvious from the many corpses left by the rebels' attempts. The flesh-kin communicated between themselves and drew up a plan, Salute the Dark did not understand the finer points, all it cared about was the prey in front of it so when One-Ten-Thirtythree steered it towards them it willingly went along. [HUNT!] it roared as they increased their speed and the enemy started to fire upon them. Suddenly alarms came from it's sensors as something came towards them, leaving a camouflaged shelter. [FOE/RIVAL!] it signalled with a triumphant joy as the approaching machine was identified as a PDF Command Salamander. This became the new priorty target, everything else downgraded as far as Salute the Dark knew. One-Ten-Thirtythree did not even try to fight the controls as the Rhino turned towards this new challenger and pushed it's engines for all the speed that they had. They moved straight at eachother, in a collision course. One guided by a mortal, the other by an ancient machine-spirit. Of the two it was the former that flinched, the Salamander's driver trying to steer away at the last moment instead of risking a head on collison. Ironcially it was this safety reflex that doomed him and his veichle. The Rhino now hit them slightly from the side instead, with enough force to flip the Salamander over as a result. Salute the Dark was by no means unscathed by the impact but it had been made in the forges of Mars when the Imperium had been young, it would take more to make it nonoperational. Even so it's gears were screeching in protest as it turned around towards it's original target. There it's Pack had taken advantage of the distraction it's charge had provided and had eradicated the enemy strongpoint, they stood there raising their right fists as a salute and the Rhino's engines roared in triumph over the victory.” http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0652_zps85ompf6r.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0653_zpsbk5bciyo.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0654_zpsdreizjq2.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0655_zpsozdmpmyv.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0663_zpsaemuplqh.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0664_zpsipumghod.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0665_zpsquo1nldq.jpg I was going to give Yarda some background aswell but it didn't really 'fit' with the rest of the update as Salute the Dark's scene of triumph would have been a bit 'cheapened' if had put something after it. Yarda's view on things will have to waint until next time I paint a veichle... Anyways... First time in 11 years (I think) that I've painted a tank and definitely the first time I've written something from the perspective of a machine-spirit so C&C is most welcome in both regards. I need yo get me some of those DA helms. My BaC Marines are going to be Iron Snakes,Black Dragons,Exorcists and a couple others. You should really go for the DA helmets mate, I've only used one so far but they are brilliant. Nice choice of Chapters you are going for, the BaC Marines will look good in those colours. Cheers fellas! Thanks for the heads up! I'm glad the fluff worked out, trying to imagine how a Night Lord Rhino 'thinks' was just as much of an experiment as the weathering. Speaking of metallic 'beasts' though, I'm going to start work on the Contemptor fairly soon(ish). Quite a bit to do at work the rest of this week though combined with the 'interesting' prospect of figuring out how to assemble him properly (the weapons for example) probably ensures that he'll have to wait until next week. I also need a short break from using Kantor Blue for a few days after that Rhino. MrBear
Are you following me and Flint13 and substracting I from VIII to make VII? An interesting guess mate, but you're wrong. I hadn't really considered the VIIth since I'm semi-allergic to painting yellow after my Empire army for Fantasy. This guy is going to be something that's a bit rarer on the forum. I could show you what I have painted tonight but that would spoil the surprise, but if you want a clue... I guess that 'Crusade' is a fitting word, they Sons of Dorn haven't got an exclusive right to use it. Soric
Are you perhaps going to paint some sons of the Lion? My reasoning being based on your recent kitbash (which looks suitably menacing using the DA helm), that and I haven't seen many of them on this forum as of late. I think you'd do them justice. On the subject of painting yellow, I have just realized how annoying a colour it is to paint after finishing painting a VII legionnary (didn't help that I started with a black undercoat :S). Your Night Lords have come together really well. MrBear
Zeal ? Well some red is involved in the painting but no proper zeal I'm afraid... Man! Why didn't I think about that? Dark Angels are way rarer than what I'm doing... I'll have to make a mental note to put a DA helmet to it's intended use next time I take a 'painting break', thanks for the vote of confidence though. There are probably easier ways to do a good yellow but I used to go with a white undercoat and then light coats of Vermin Brown > Vomit Brown > Golden Yellow > Gryphonne Sepia > Golden Yellow + Skull White. A bit time consuming (never tried on power armour though) but it gave a pretty decent result. In regard to the interlude... It should definitely be up by this time tomorrow, things have been way smoother than I thought that it should be.
