JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue."

Recommended Posts

@MrBear: thanks, bud...

i had a lot of fun turning a melta bomb into a Blood Chalice;)...

alright, i started painting the arm and Chalice...

unfortunately, as you can see, the glue set on the pin before i got the cup flush with the hand...

i thought i could let it slide, but the more i worked on the paint, the more the skinny pin really bothered me...

tonight i broke the cup off, and glued it back flush...

luckily, i didn't do much damage to the paint...

the next set of pics will show how much better it looks sitting flush...

until then, here are the first three stages of the paintjob...

first i laid down the basecoats...

next, i worked the gold up to the midtone, and then gave the gold and red it's shading wash...

finally, i did my black lining, and started building up my reds...

thanks, ArcticPaladin...

glad you like what you see...

there is plenty more to come;)...

all my work is done with a brush...

i love my hairy sticks...

i've had an airbrush for twenty years, but haven't ever tried it...

too much world travel, and not enough space for a compressor in my pack...

one day i'll start messing with it...

cheers

thanks, deathspectersgt7...

glad you like my style...

i got the Blood Chalice glued down the way i had intended it to be originally...

i think it looks much better, now that the pin i used for the handle is not so blatant...

time to fix the bit of paint i rubbed off while making the fix, and get this bad boy done...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Narm6_zps40b78964.jpg

i also got the next layer of color done on the wings for the jump pack...

like the helmet, this penultimate layer is a 1-4 mix of P3 Underbelly Blue and Morrow White...

one highlight of pure white to go, and then it will be time to finish highlighting the red armor...

thanks, AP...

i hope this Sanguinary Priest will be one of my best pieces yet;)...

i got back from my morning surf session, surfing some big hurricane waves:), and had a note from the post office saying that there was a big ass box waiting for me there...

as you can see, they were not lying;)...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/8cf29de5f839f878cc87d95bc086692c_zps87d4a518.jpg

this is the start of my next commission...

it will be Strike Force Cassius!!!

in the box we have 1 Rhino, 1 Whirlwind, 1 Predator, 1 Land Raider, 2x Hunter/Stalker, 2x Stormraven (Chibihawk), and 3x Vindicator...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/fa289f4b72118806f93e776621af595e_zpsa9e18c78.jpg

it is only about one third of the commission, but a good place to start...

i am waiting for some Tyranid bits to arrive, while i finish up my two Blood Angels, so i can decorate the tanks to look like proper Tyranid Vet. armor...

there will be some cool markings to show that this is Cassius' force, and that they are all Vets of the Battle for Macragge...

i look forward to the chance to build a really unique army, that has not been seen much before...

cheers

Sweet mother of the God-Emperor, my mind can not comprehend the awesome that will be that commission. Do you do multiple projects at the same time? And also, is this a full time job for you or something you do on the side?

Looking forward to your progress, brother. May the Emperor guide your hands!

@ArcticPaladin: this is my job:)...

i do usually have a few projects on the go at once, but not always for multiple clients...

i will finish up the Blood Angels before i really dive into the Ultramarines...

i don't want anyone to feel that they are getting bumped back in the queue, since the wait is always a few months...

@deathspectersgt7: the waves were cranking, for sure:)...

big and heavy, just the way i like 'em...

makes you feel alive after conquering some double-overhead (12 feet/4 meters) waves...

6 rides, no wipeouts, but strong currents and lots of paddling...

my arms hurt this morning;)...

this next job is going to be interesting for me, since i have no clue how things are going to work out...

the client wants it quick, so expect a lot of spray-can action, and sponge weathering...

should be a fun experiment...

i look forward to bring the Tyranid Hunter aspect to the fore, with 'Nid trophies, and lots of use of the Tyranid Hunter symbol, as well as some black accents to show these are Cassius' boys...

carrying on with the Sang. Priest, i've made some progress on the whites of the Narthecium arm...

now it is time to wash and highlight the metals, and get to work on the details, before i finish the white and red...

the chalice will be done last, as that seems to be the part i touch the most while painting this piece...

thanks for looking, and sticking with my slow, plodding, pace;)...

hey B&C...

i got a bit more done on the Narthecium arm...

the details are almost done, but i will wait to finish them until i get the red and white completed, just in case i splash a little paint...

not much of an update, but it is getting close to the end...

thanks, guys...

i'm doing some more work on the Apoth. arm tonight...

the waves are gone for a day or two, so i'll be working until the wee hours of the morning:)...

since i didn't surf today, i got to building instead...

here are the first few sub-assemblies for the Ultramarine project...

Land Raider, Rhino, and Stormraven...

thanks, guys...

glad i've still got your attention:)...

the Narthecium arm is getting there...

the shadows are starting to pop on the white, the Blood Chalice is ready to be finished up, and the details are coming together...

i'm not sure how i feel about the first red highlights on the red of the shoulder pad...

i'll have to ruminate on it for a bit while i finish up the rest of the arm..

here's a funny one...

that moment when your friend tells you that he has a gift for you, a surfboard that is your favorite size, shape, and fin set-up, and it's pink!!!

pink is punk...

i surf it with pride;)...

thanks, dss7...

there is still the layer of pure white to go, but for some reason it is photographing really bright...

this is a 4-1 mix of P3 Morrow White and P3 Underbelly Blue, which doesn't look at all white on the palette, but goes on pretty bright...

i got some more done on the sub-assemblies...

since all hatches, doors, and cockpits are going to be glued shut on this project, i don't have to worry about the interior detail...

on the Stalker and the Land Raider, i still need to clean all the mould lines off of the tracks, before i can glue them on, and then get the tops of the hulls glued on...

there are a lot of mould lines on those damn tracks!!!

hey B&C...

i have started adjusting the shading and highlighting on the shoulder pad...

i think i figured out how i will handle this shape, with the crazy new (for me) highlighting style on this mini...

i got the gold all smoothed out on the Chalice, and ready for highlights, but for some reason the camera didn't want to focus on the Chalice, and the shoulder pad, at the same time...

more angles tomorrow, instead...

we are almost at the end of this one, i swear;)...

This stuff is brilliant! The red is so lush and I will try and copy your recipe when I paint my Space Hulk set. I cant wait to see the Priest finished, love the use of the Ravenwing apothecary head, really adds to the uniqueness.

Cant wait to see you Tyranid Hunters.

PS: The Space Wolf with the pink storm shield is a great conversion, it almost looks real. He seems to have dropped his thunder hammer though...

thanks, Yak...

this was a fun kit bash, though buying a Ravenwing Command box just to use the Apothecary parts is a little bit silly...

it has made for a very unique Sanguinary Priest...

alright, the arm is done...

time to glue this bad boy on, and see how the Marine looks with both his arms:)...

sorry for the uber close-ups, but there was way too much hand in these pics...

it will look better tomorrow when i take pics of the complete body...

i'm pretty happy with how the little details turned out, like the liquid in the vial, the hazard-striped hose, and the helix symbol...

thanks for sticking with me through this epic journey in painting a single arm;)...
