JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue."

Recommended Posts

thanks, everybody...

it is nice to do something a bit original, since it often feels like everything we do as mini painters is derivative, or influenced by someone else's ideas, since before we even get our hands on a mini, it has already been painted by someone in a studio...

this is even more pronounced with Space Marine Chapters, since we are working in the constraints of predetermined schemes...

with my Mephiston and Tycho conversions, Calgar Grey Knight conversions, Heralds of Light Captain, my Salamanders Captain's flames, and now these canopies, i feel like i have been able to do something we don't see every day, which is a good feeling...

@The_Chaplain: i'm taking proper pics tonight, so i'll get close-ups posted tomorrow...

it's Throwback Thursday again...

this week i have my Golden Bolter Silver medal, and People's Choice award, winner...

this is the Games Day 2008 Space Marine Captain, painted as a Salamanders Chapter Marine...

i wanted to try my hand at realistic flames ever since i saw them painted on a car on Overhaulin'...

when the Bolter and Chainsword painting contest came up in 2010, i knew i had found my chance to give it a whirl...

given the chance to try this scheme again, i would like to refine the flames a little more, but i was pretty happy with the result the first time around...

thanks, guys...

i always appreciate the kind words about my painting and conversions:)....

here are the extra angles, and the close-up of the pilot's canopy...

in order for the 'Nids not to be too harsh a color against the orange, i used a mix of 3-1 P3 Greatcoat Grey and Thamar Black...

hey B&C...

here is the second Stalker...

i have simplified the scheme a bit in comparison to the first one...

it looks better, and has sped up the process...

now i am on to a Whirlwind, and a second Stormraven...

i'll do a step-by-step for the Stormraven, since i spaced on photographing the crucial rust stage of the Stalker, making my pics pointless:(...

thanks, MagicMan...

glad you like my work:)...

it's Throwback Thursday again...

this time around it we are taking it back to 2009, with my Heralds of Light Captain...

an obscure Chapter, i believe this is the first ever painted example of these guys...

when i was commissioned to paint this guy, the client asked me to paint the star Chapter Badge on the kneepad, and a flaming tower Company Badge on the shoulder and shield...

a year after doing this paintjob, i was pleasantly surprised to see that this designed was used for a painting article in the Bolter & Chainsword e-zine...

this was my first time designing something that ended up in the 40K canon...

it's a great feeling...

Great work man. I'm loving your stuff and your dedication to your craft! Seeing how you build up your colors reminds me of the olid painting classes I took in college...except your not painting still lifes of apples and paper bags er...keep it up!

thanks, BLOODSAINT...

this is my chosen artform, so it's really nice to hear that some aspects of "Fine Art"show through in my techniques...

mini painting is basically "paint-by-numbers" in its essence, so it feels a bit pretentious to try and elevate it to an artform, but i try;)...

i found the unpainted pic of the Heralds of Light Captain's arm, so you guys can see the sculpting that went into the custom design...

as you can see, i sculpted the towers flat, to keep it simple, and then painted in the details...

my Facebook page has passed "500 likes"!!!

anybody here who is not following the page, please head on over and have a look...

i do a bit more writing there with each post, sharing a little about my daily life, and what the nightly movie is that i paint to...

That Salamander is amazing. The flames look great and, to me at least, they fit in really well with the overall paint job.

I'm not sure I've seen that much weathering on Ultramarines before - it looks great! The reflective cockpit is an interesting idea, and the Tyranid silhouettes look good. It may be the photos, but the orange of the canopy looks kind of close to the orange used for the rust/weathering, which confused me a bit when I first looked at it.

thanks, Sgt. Blank...

the canopy is a different color than the rust, which shows the most in the close-up...

the rust is P3 Khador Red Highlight, with a little Vallejo Smoke to darken it...

the canopies are a 1-1 mix of P3 KRH and P3 Heartfire, making the canopies much more yellow...

unfortunately, my photography is rubbish;)...

here is a teaser of the next vehicle in the Ultramarines commission, the Whirlwind:)...

who doesn't love the idea of banks of missiles launching across the battlefield???

next up, the finished tank, and then the second Stormraven with a full step-by-step of this scheme...

thanks for looking...

i hope you like it...

hey B&C...

it's Throwback Thursday again...

going back to 2009/2010, here is my Blood Angels Sternguard Sergeant...

this seems like a good week for a Blood Angels Marine, since they are the hot topic right now...

at this point, this was my most advanced red, and, i think, my best battle damage...

i learned a lot on this paintjob, all of which got applied to The Butcher a year later...

the need up the contrast of the red was the biggest lesson...

hey B&C...

i hope everyone has had a nice, though short, solstice day...

i spent mine packing up at my place, and heading over to a friend's to do some dogsitting for the next week...

the temporary workspace is all set up...

the front row of paints is the color palette for this Ultramarines commission...

the view from the "office" is pretty sweet:)...

That Salamander is f***ing bonkers. Phenomenal is honestly an understatement.

You have a great talent. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us at B&C!

The stormraven looks great, but censored.gif the marines need to take better care of their equipment. They should have given the flyer a new paintjob several months earlier. It's got too much chipped paint IMHO.

@ephrael: yes, i have been using P3 almost exclusively since 2004...

i love the satin finish and unique tones of the colors, and have become a much better painter by having to mix custom colors to match the studio paintjobs of other companies using other lines of paint...

i like pots better than droppers, and P3 is smooth as butter:)...

Throwback Thursday again...

this time we take it back to 2009, and a mini, Mephiston, that got a lot of mixed reviews...

this was my first time trying to make a more modern version of a venerable old mini...

working with Greenstuff press-molds for the first time, this process saved me from a lot of fine detail sculpting that I just don't have the ability to do...

one of these days i will have to try and make an even better version of Mephiston...
