Relict
INTERVAL ONE ISSTVAN III THE DEATH OF A BROTHERHOOD "Traitor..." The accusation was barely a whisper, yet there was enough familiarity behind the venom to make me pause. "Hamilcar of the Tenth." The dying Captain did not reply. Instead, his gaze found mine, the baleful eyes burning bright behind a mask of cascading blood. Four mass-reactive rounds had transformed his midsection into an unrecognizable mess of shattered ceramite and shredded innards. A chainsword had taken the left side of his face off. The only distinguishable features left above his gorget were the Butcher's Nails. Even now, I knew that Hamilcar's cortical implants were pulsating, scraping at the raw meat of his brain with the dull knife of a singular command - kill, kill, kill. My brother's remaining hand trembled as he attempted to wrap the fingers around the grip of a fallen bolter. "I can't let you do that," I said softly as I gently kicked the battered weapon out of my brother's reach, noticing with some disdain that it borne the sigil of the Emperor's Children Legion. My brother's ruin of a face contorted. "Why?" He spat the word out with as much hatred as he was able to muster. "Why? Answer me... You... You thrice-damned traitor." I had no answers for Hamilcar. I had no answers for any of the nearly one hundred dead and dying Legionaries who lay around me. Most wore the same livery as I did, the great fanged maws that once marked their armor now defaced. Fallen warriors in sea green or royal purple were scattered amidst the mass of filthy blue and white, their once-proud heraldries likewise erased in defiance. A fine last stand. It had taken my men days to corral and corner them within this worthless husk of a city on this worthless husk of a world. It had taken my men hours still to silence the last of the resistance. Even with myself and Cael leading the Terminators' relentless advance. A fine last stand indeed. Very admirable. I turned back to address Hamilcar, uncertain of what I would say until I saw that there was no longer any need. The Captain's dead eyes now stared vacantly at the abused sky beyond the gutted roof of the manufactorum. At last, the Nails sing no more. I thought as I sheathed the sword that had cut down so many of my kin today. Die knowing that you fought well, brother. I had no pain-engines enslaving my mind to the gory joys of the battlefield. What I did have was duty. Not to the bloodthirsty, rampaging creature I called father, but to the battered and bloodied men I called brothers. When the Warrior Lodge spoke of the word that the tide would turn on this world, I willingly turned with it. I could not condemn those who follow me to death simply because I wished to present some illusion of devotion to the distant Emperor who regarded us as nothing more than tools to be blunted and then discarded. "Captain Voss," Cael's quiet voice interrupted my musings. "We have cleared the grounds. Caleston reports that those on the upper levels are dead as well." "Our losses?" "Nineteen dead and twice that number wounded," Peacemaker replied emotionlessly, mostly due to the augmentic vocal cords that had replaced his natural ones. A memento of his days serving with the Destroyers. He shrugged, not an easy feat to perform in Tartaros Terminator armor. "Mostly Torvan's maniacs. Void Serpent is gone - he and his men moved on to the next sector before Caleston even got to the roof." "Very good, old friend," I said with a sigh. "Order the rest of the company to follow Torvan's lead. The second we are clear, call in the Destroyers - I want the tunnels below flooded with phosphex." "Yes, sir." RECORDS PART ONE http://s1.postimg.org/41acq1onj/Praetor_1.jpg http://s1.postimg.org/wffs9xc7j/Praetor_2.jpg http://s1.postimg.org/a4rx9yexb/Praetor_3.jpg Centurion Voss, "Iron Devourer" Captain, XII Legion, III Echelon, LXXVII Battle Company [pict-capture: Fall of Latona, Shadow Crusade] A line commander of considerable renown within the XII Legion, the earliest available records on Centurion-Captain Voss place him as a junior line officer within the ranks of the War Hounds of old. Singled out for his tactical acumen, Voss was among a handful of XII Legion officers selected by Legion Master Lhorke for secondment to other Legions. Attached to the IV Legion, Voss developed a fascination with armored warfare over the course of a decade. Respected by his cousin Legionaries for his ferocity, Voss often hurled himself into the breach, his chainsword belching smoke and spitting gore. When he parted, Voss borne the moniker of "Iron Devourer" as well as an ornate Volkite Charger, both courtesy of his impressed hosts. By the time the XII Legion was reunited with its gene-sire over the cursed world of Nuceria, Voss had already risen to company command. Refusing the "Butcher's Nails" implants, Voss turned his attention to reorganizing the 77th Battle Company. Taking the berserk fury granted by the implants into consideration, Voss developed a two-fold tactical doctrine that proved successful time and time again during the later decades of the Great Crusade. The least controllable Legionaries were formed into assault formations that would descend upon the enemy suddenly and without warning [often suffering heavy casualties in the process]. The disorganized enemy would then be destroyed by the company's real strength - its advancing ranks of Terminators and roving packs of tanks. It is unknown why such a dedicated and respected warrior would turn from the Emperor's service. Some speak of the hidden Warrior Lodges that permeated the ranks of the Legions in the final years of the Great Crusade. Perhaps Voss, always a taciturn soul who shunned the company of all but a few, succumbed to the whispers of darkness within the confines of one such foul confraternity. What is known is that Voss and the bulk of his company took to the fields of Isstvan III as part of the World Eaters' second wave, their mercilessly efficient manner of warfare now turned against their own brother Legionaries, some of whom had once served under Voss. Voss did not survive the Horus Heresy, with his final battle recorded as the Purge of Nuceria in Imperial archives. Although Voss was reported to have survived the counterattack made by the Ultramarines under the leadership of Roboute Guilliman himself, he and most of the senior command cadre of the 77th made no further appearances in the battles that followed. Given the monstrous transformation wrought upon the Primarch of the XII Legion and the rapid corruption of the World Eaters that followed, it is likely that Voss and those most loyal to him met their end at the hands of their former brethren within the bowels of the Conqueror as the Legion devolved into mindless infighting, with what remained of its discipline turning into bloodshed for bloodshed's sake. Panoply of War Although he nominally only held the rank of Centurion, Voss was in fact in de facto command of the entirety of the 3rd Echelon - a formation that included at least 2,800 Legionaries as well as a sizable armored component at the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. As such, Voss was equipped with a panoply of war that was befitting of a Praetor. A small but crucial detail marked his armor - due to his lack of the "Butcher's Nails" implants, Voss never felt fully as one with those who did possess them, preferring to bear the numerical Legion designation over the World Eaters heraldry. This practice was mirrored by a number of other members of the 77th Battle Company. 1. Cataphractii Pattern Terminator Armor [modified by XII Legion artificers] 2. Master-Crafted Paragon Blade 3. Sent to serve in the 77th Battle Company's Destroyer Cadre as punishment, Cael survived time and time again through sheer bloody-minded stubbornness. Recognizing his talents, Voss eventually elevated Cael to the rank of Cestus-Lieutenant, giving him a place within the senior command cadre. Unwaveringly loyal to Voss, Cael willingly followed his master and mentor into treachery, blooding himself in the Traitors' cause during the events of the Isstvan System. Panoply of War Comprised of five members, Cael Terminator Bodyguard Squad served as both a close protection detail and a mobile command nexus for Voss. Each suit of state-of-the-art armor had been further modified to include a number of advanced battlefield sensors and information processing systems linked to the armor of the Centurion-Captain himself. As for the Legionaries themselves, each was a veteran, their armor marked by the snarling red hound to honor the Legion that had existed before the coming of Angron. Cael himself borne the thunderbolt motif of the Unification War upon his breastplate, marking him as a veteran of the Legion's earliest campaigns. 1. Relict
INTERVAL TWO ISSTVAN V THE DEATH OF AN AGE Unlike so many of my brothers, I could still dream. I dreamed of my years as a feral youth prowling the steaming jungles of my nameless homeworld. The soft detritus of the jungle floor dampening my footsteps as I tracked my prey, the dense canopy of the trees above shielding me from the hungry gaze of the massive reptilian predators that ruled the skies. The spear felt good in my hands. I remembered that. I dreamed of my years as a fresh Legionary standing under the great banner of my Legion. The collared red hound that adored it standing tall and proud upon the fluttering fabric as we stood tall and proud upon the vanquished remains of some alien fortress. The bolter felt good in my hands. I remembered that. I dreamed of my days as a young officer marching among the serried ranks and steel banners of Perturabo's sons. The cold gleam of the sun on the burnished plates of their power armor as they labored tirelessly to reduce their enemies to nothing but ashes. The endless clanking of countless tank treads as their guns smote all who opposed them. The sword felt good in my hands. I remembered that. All of that changed when we finally found our gene-sire on that worthless backwater of a world. He was not the general-statesman we had hope he would be. Not like the Lion or Guilliman or Horus. He was a ruined god of war, an avatar of brutality and wrath whose mind was aflame with the passions of the Nails. The new master of the XII Legion wanted nothing to do with his sons, the warriors who had been made in his image. The new master of the XII Legion wanted nothing to do with the Imperium, the empire he had been created to help conquer. The new master of the XII Legion wanted only to die with his Eaters of Cities, the only kindred he had ever known. When the World Eaters asked for the Nails, I was not among them. The cold rationality of my own mind, hone by nearly a century of constant warfare, was worth more to me than the unrestrained fury that the Nails offered. Few of my brother-officers thought the same. Not even my old friend, Khârn. I could not blame them, for what warrior would deny himself the company of his brothers? It was my lot to command and lead, and I could not do so effectively with a mind clouded by rage. I did not feel the kiss of adrenaline that they felt in the pits. The only company I kept were those who either mastered the Nails or lacked them entirely - Vorias, Helvast, Cael. Now I waited with my brothers for the Emperor to send His avenging sons. On the black sand of this world we would once again commit the sin of fratricide. I could see Torvan and Ixion, pacing restlessly, their lightning claws crackling with lethal energy with every eager twitch of the Nails. I could see Cael, ever loyal and faithful, standing at my side. I could see Helvast, always majestic and inscrutable, waiting in the shadows with a stillness that only statues and corpses are capable of, for he was a little of both. We were ready. RECORDS PART TWO http://s16.postimg.org/bohg56pp1/Apothecaries_1.jpg http://s16.postimg.org/5em6i6qad/Apothecaries_4.jpg http://s16.postimg.org/6uxp0bt79/Apothecaries_5.jpg Apothecarion Detachment [pict-capture: Extermination Phase, Isstvan III Atrocity] http://s16.postimg.org/d0z572n4l/Apothecaries_2.jpg http://s16.postimg.org/yjkc7ug7p/Apothecaries_3.jpg Primus Medicae Hallin, "Bloodletter" Apothecary, Caleston Tactical Squad [pict-capture: Extermination Phase, Isstvan III Atrocity] The most senior Apothecary of the 3rd Echelon, Primus Medicae Hallin had accumulated such a morbid reputation that even fellow World Eaters remained wary in his presence. Although he had been one of the first to ask for and receive the "Butcher's Nails" implants, Hallin, or "Bloodletter," as he was already known by that point, retained his cold and calculating mind outside of battle. Although he was skilled as any other Apothecary was in the arts of healing, Hallin's true gift lay in the arts of interrogation. Not even the most hardened of individuals, be they human or transhuman, could resist his macabre methods for long. Hallin's murderous talents were in full display during the events of the Isstvan System. In the blasted rubbles of the Choral City, Hallin accompanied Caleston Tactical Squad in some of the fiercest fighting recorded. A merciless fighter devoid of any notion of nobility or honor, Hallin was known to have defeated over two dozen Loyalist Legionaries of varying rank over the course of the Isstvan III Atrocity. On the blasted fields of Isstvan V, once the Traitors had exterminated the last remaining pockets of Loyalist resistance in the Urgall Depression, Hallin led his fellow Apothecaries on a grim harvest, tearing the gene-seeds from hundreds of corpses. During the pursuit of the surviving Raven Guard elements in the wasteland beyond the Dropsite Massacre, Hallin perpetrated unspeakable acts of evil on any Raven Guard the World Eaters were able to capture alive, using chemical means to extract the location of their compatriots before leaving them, eviscerated yet still alive, to suffer a slow death. The eventual fate of the "Night Lord of the XII Legion" is unknown. Hallin vanished from the records when the World Eaters withdrew from the devastated surface of Nuceria after reaving it of all life. Given the speculated fate of most of the senior command cadre of the 77th Battle Company as well as Hallin's own nature, it is safe to assume that the Primus Medicae was involved in the infighting that consumed the XII Legion in the wake of the Purge of Nuceria, finally meeting his fate in the fighting pit to the roar of his brothers. Panoply of War As appropriate for his status, Hallin was equipped with a suit of Mark II power armor, modified for his station. Somewhat of an individualist, Hallin refused to wear any form of heraldry beyond the basic Legion colors and numeration - an act echoed by his fellow Apothecaries. 1. As a World Eater under the legion's new master, Helvast racked up an impressive count of victories before falling under the axe of an Ork warboss. Following his internment, Helvast acted as an advisor to the officers of his beloved 77th Battle Company. His mind unburdened by the "Butcher's Nails" implants, the Dreadnought was a calming influence to the mindless rages of the younger Legionaries. It is unknown why such a venerable Terran warrior would turn from the Emperor's light, but turn he did. When the Traitors took to the field on Isstvan V, Helvast was among them, his twin power claws reaping a fearsome toll among the ranks of the Raven Guard. Helvast's legend came to an end on the world above which, more than a century ago, he had first met his gene-sire. Caught in the initial fury of the Ultramarines counterattack and low on ammunition, Helvast nevertheless fought with villainous valor, mowing down dozens of Loyalist Legionaries before being separated from the rest of the 77th. His eventual fate is left unrecorded, but given the events that followed the XIII Legion's assault on Nuceria, there is little chance that the Dreadnought survived both his encounter with the Ultramarines and, left recovered, the subsequent orbital bombardment of the planet. Panoply of War Interred within the chassis of a mighty Contemptor Dreadnought, Helvast had, over the course of several decades, mastered most of the weapon configurations available for his ironform. He was known to have favored a pair of power claws with built-in flamers for close-quarters fighting. As one of the Ancients of the XII Legion, his ironform was adorned by a number of World Eaters iconography, each one a bloody honor earned on the battlefield. 1. A relatively young veteran of four decades, Ixion enforced his will among the Terminator elite of the company through force alone, striking down any World Eater who had the audacity of challenging him for command. In battle, Ixion was an uncontrollable and unstoppable avatar of destruction and death, often hurling himself into the breach at the head of a forlorn hope. Deployed to the northernmost reaches of the Traitor defense line in the Urgall Depression, Ixion led his Terminators on a charge into the melee between the Emperor's Children and Iron Hands Legions as the full depth of the betrayal was revealed, caring not who they slew. Ixion would go on to carve a bloody reputation for himself beyond the charred sand of Isstvan V. Unconfirmed reports indicate that Ixion survived the maelstrom of the Horus Heresy despite taking part in every major campaign that the World Eaters were involved in. Disappearing into the Eye of Terror with the surviving Traitors, Ixion would emerge, six hundred years later, at the head of an insane warband of Khorne Berserkers under the flag of "The Crimson Consecrated." If such reports are founded, then it would appear that Ixion was the only member of the 77th's senior command cadre to survive the lethal infighting that took place as corruption claimed the XII Legion. Panoply of War As befitting of its intended role, the members of Ixion Terminator Siege Squad favored the additional protection offered by their Cataphractii Pattern Terminator Armor as well as the heavier firepower offered by their Phobos Pattern combi-bolters. 1.
