Armond
Once I start painting them the heraldry will start. For now I am still assembling/building these guys up. I think I am mostly done though. I just need some vehicles and drop pods. I just finished pinning everyone to bases, so the next step is black primer! I just need to go get some, and then I need to acquire some motivation to start painting! Armond
We are a brotherhood forged upon the anvil of heresy, nearly broken by the traitorous actions of our once kin. Betrayal was unknown; no known plan had been created to deal with such duplicity. So instead, we reacted with rage. Our Lord Primarch, Roboute Guilliman, decreed that we were to seek retribution for the outrage of the Calth Atrocity. A misunderstanding perhaps, a perceived threat where there was none; that was the initial reaction. But as the events began to unfold, and the truths of the attacks were revealed, we were given leave to unleash the restraints and seek out vengeance. I lost half our number in the underground tunnels and caves on Calth where we fought the betrayers in red. We withdrew beneath the surface of the planet’s crust in order to shield ourselves from the nuclear bombardment the Word Bearers unleashed on us as well as their own. Ours were not the only ones to seek shelter in the extensive system of corridors underground, the XVII Legion also sought refuge. The intensive close-quarters battles were frequent and bloody affairs. We had no choice but to fight, there was no safe zone, no position of sanctuary. When we made contact with our brothers, we grouped up, invoking Legion dictates by way of establishing chain of command and proper tactical methods. I found myself charged with commanding my own squad of breachers. We were at an advantage within the tunnels and the claustrophobic walls underground, for we were trained to make battle within the confines of void-born vessels. The enemy was a zealous one, ever screaming the litanies written within their literature. We roared in anger and hatred, overpowering their calls for death with our demands for retribution. Brother Dantius was the first to fall, a victim of a cave-in caused by a misplaced shot from a frag missile launched by one of the traitors. The great boulders and rubble cut off support; we tried to recover his body for honor’s sake, but were unable to shift the majority of the rocks. So we memorialized his name, scratching it into the plates of our greaves. Egnatius and Marcus fell next. Felled by the crushing impact of a Chaplain’s weapon of office, their bodies were trod upon like offal by this foul speaker of lies. The hate welled up inside me; I roared a challenge and sped towards the foe. We met with a crash of roaring voices and disruption fields screaming in protest. His claims of the “truth” and his spoken lies of our Lord Primarch only fuelled my strength. I crushed his head in the palm of my power fist, punctuating it with a scream of triumph. The loss of their leader caused a momentary hesitation, no such hesitation stayed our hands and the entirety of the enemy force was cut down by the judicious use of our bolters. Ammunition has been short, and we are forced to scavenge the dead to maintain our supplies. A short respite followed our previous encounter, allowing us to merge with another segment of our Ultramarine brothers. They had been fighting a losing battle; half of their heavy weapons support squad was lost already, as well as two thirds of their tactical squads. The unique style of battle beneath the crust was proving to be difficult and the foe surpassed us in numbers during most encounters. Our specialty in confined spaces proved beneficial to the ad hoc formation. My squad shouldered the majority of fire and could close with the enemy whilst our brothers provided the much needed fire support to prevent us from being overwhelmed by the vastness of the XVII Legion’s forces. It was a war of attrition like no other I had ever heard of or been a part of. We are taught by our Lord Primarch to temper our emotions, control them. But in those trying times, we harnessed our emotions, channeling them into felling blows and legendary feats of strength. What we lacked in numbers, we more than made up for in ferocity. We were more akin to the sons of Angron in those desperate times, more primal than ever before. Seven more of ours fell over the course of the following months; mighty Seneca fell combatting the red demons in Terminator armor. Boisterous Vespan, stoic Castor, and Gaius so optimistic were consumed by a well-placed plasma burst; little left but the streaming vapors. Kleitos sacrificed himself, throwing himself atop a plasma grenade, saving many battle brothers with his own life as payment. My confidant, my closest friend Helios was overcome next. His defeat punched through me as surely a bolter shell would penetrate unarmored flesh. I watched as he battled no less than four foes simultaneously, holding his own. We were all battling our opponents, outnumbered at a minimum two to one, the enemies’ confidence proving to be their downfall. I watched as Helios held off his attackers with a skill unparalleled in those moments, no doubt awaiting the arrival of aid. But none came, and he was finally struck down. I remember my vision narrowing and my world turning a deep shade of red as a wrath like none I had ever had enveloped my body and mind. But I was too late, by the time we had fought back the foes, Helios was lying in a deepening pool of blood. We gathered his body up, every piece, and we brought him back to our apothecary. Helios’ body had been rent asunder, both legs had been hacked off, and he had but a single arm left attached. Holes in his armor indicated where he had been stabbed and his helmet showed the telltale signs of being struck with a blunt instrument. Apothecary Numenous announced that the sus-an membrane had kicked in and he was currently in a catatonic state. We held tightly to the hope that he could be reawakened once we were able to be extracted from Calth. An Astartes can survive for extremely long periods in this state, even when activated by sustainment of extremely grievous wounds. I bear his shield now, for he can no longer do so. But his hatred of the enemy gave him the strength to continue on, and he continues to serve the Imperium from within the confines of his sarcophagus blaring litanies of hate and honor as he strides into battle with the blessings of a dreadnought body. Brothers Leon and Bion, who shared a blood mother before they were accepted as aspirants into the Legion, died within moments of each other. Nearly a standard Terran year different in age, they looked as twins might, identical. An errant bolter shell struck Bion first, bringing him to his knees, clutching at his throat. Leon turned to aid his brother, and was cloven in two by the well placed blow of a power axe. I remember each of their deaths vividly, and I speak of their deaths as a reminder of our origins. We are born of a treachery wrought by a Legion of lies; the Imperium has suffered because of this. Ours is a dedication to the death of all traitors, but especially those mongrel sons of Lorgar. We bleed the ink of the Codex Astartes, the most glorious of works in our age. By its tenets and in the name of our Lord Primarch we shall reap a terrible toll on our enemies and the enemies of the Emperor. -Veteran Sergeant Kreios Maximus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294456-the-great-scouring/page/2/#findComment-3810154 Share on other sites
