So I've managed to contract the dreaded winter flu and have been holed up for a couple of days. Mrs told me to rest today but we can't have that whilst there is power armour to paint.

Not very interesting yet but everything is cleaned, trimmed, cleaned again (you'd be surprised how much grease get rubs off from our hands) and finally mounted. Can't prime today though, bloomin cold and rain grrr

@Daemonclaw, Your kind words have made my day. Cheers mate smile.png

credit where credit is due mate

hope you gave the feeble man cough when the mrs told you to rest and uttered the famous "i will try"laugh.png

and typical of our weather that when you do get "ill time" you cant get anything donebiggrin.png

keep up the good work .....when you can

@Daemonclaw, its scary how close to the mark you are :)

@Luthermax, As a tester i've taken a new plastic pad and shaved it to similar size. I'll post pics when primed.

@Nighthunters, Thanks dude. Yeah, I'm trying to be more organised when I paint. This is the first time doing it with the models this broken down but I'm hoping a longer time spent preparing will speed up the painting process.

Finally prepared and primed. Been awhile since I painted anything GW and I forgot how many moldlines you have to get through. Very tedious.

Not sure if I'm going to batch paint these guys. I find it a bit of a mindfudge to do but part of me thinks its good to get out of ones comfort zone, training the mind muscles to paint more efficiently.

I will, however, be doing a little tester of the black as I'm going for a different recipe. I like my Ravens slightly muted to GW's black but as they are for a mate, I want to try to recreate the box art (more matte though, still loving scale 75). This means finishing with a brighter grey but  I will post pics of my paints and tools tmrw.

Today its another boring one but it is the last. Its pure paint from now on.

As always any opinions are always appreciated and as always, Happy Painting :)

Ok so after recovering from manflu I sat down at my desk, looked at the massive amount of primed plastic and knuckled down on a completely different project, as we all know this the best way to attack problems of this nature smile.png

Started on the test fig, aiming to do one guy over 5 hours (not all at once) Here are some of the colour recipes and basecoat shots.

Black, red and gold (gold list missing hull red but you can see that in the red)

Well I changed to dark grey as a primer as its neutral. My power armour is typically black but I enjoy allot of stuff that isn't board appropriate, skaven and Hasselfree minis in particular. I prefer grey primer for those.

Even if i had black primer, I would still go for grey on these guys. They have so many little details on them that working up from black is a little more time consuming than grey and as I prefer S75 for its matte properties, I would still have to paint over a black prime.

Something else is that I used to use primer like a basecoat. The job of a primer is to apply a rough surface for your paint to grip to and the colour of that prime sets the tone of the figure. Dark, mid, or bright. A basecoat covers completely, a prime should not.

You want the 'Urmuth' tutorial. This guy, Automaton aka Seb Archer explains it better than me, its who I had the penny drop moment with and I can tell you from the horses mouth that Meg Maples and John 'Dark Messiah' Harrision do the same thing.

Sorry if that is a little long winded but I hope it explains where I'm coming from. As always, I'm not saying this is the the only way, this is the way I think it should be.

That is a great tutorial - and website - thanks for the link!

Each to their own as you said. Personally for black I go black primer, grey highlights, black wash. I tailor the highlights and wash with blue / brown depending on whether it's a cool or warm scheme.

PS Nice 'Paints Through the Ages' mix you have there. Love that Hull Red for a red basecoat. I gotta get me some of that Scale75 black...

dude Hull Red is awesome, Burnt Cadmium is also pretty sexy but it for me its only for red, Hull Red works with so many things. Its like a really rich scorched brown. Especially nice as a base for gold.

Burnt Caddy is great too but a little harder to work with. My recipe for the ultimate red blend is:

VMC Hull Red

VMC Burnt Cadmium Red

GW Red Gore

VMC Red

VMC Aramantha Red

GW Vomit Brown

The latter two being edge and final highlights.

Moar Progress, left is reds, metallics, and gems. The skulls and the chest are horrible but luckily being a bolter guy it will be covered up.

Hi Brother Excedis

Thank you for looking and posting.

With the black, I use SCC's tutorial, but I substitute GW colours for Scale 75. Also I substitute Badab black/Nuln oil wash (i hate this stuff, come at me internet) for a glaze of Vallejo Black with a tip of black ink. I haven't done that on this guy yet though.

As for the gold, I paint a thinned down layer of Hull red on the gold area first as a base. Hull red is more a brown maroon colour than straight red. It helps give a reddish brown to the gold.

Death company are mostly black (neutral) and red (warm). In order to keep things warm I went with a warmish brown base for the gold. At this level of painting its not massively important, this is tabletop standard but little things like that help keep the overall look more cohesive.

Hope that has been of some use and thanks for your kind words.

Of course brother. You do excellent work which is fun to look at on lunch break and you peruse my work as well. Only fair.

Thanks for the link for the highlights. When I can get back to work on them that'll make them so much better. As for the red base for gold that will help a lot. I've always had trouble with my gold being too strong, even thinned over a black base (don't shoot, I'm far from the artsy type so this is all new and strange to me).

Brother Excedis. I took a picture of my wet palette for you, The Dark in the middle is Hull Red. Its using my dodge cam phone but when I use my mates camera (shouts out to you sonics, love ya bro) I will take a better picture of it. It looks dark but it really plays in the light.

So I reckon I'm around 80% done. Its slow progress on the test fig as I'm trying to work out how to optimise for the rest. Also if you look at the box art, originally I thought ok, thats easy, red, black and gold but if you look closely each red is different. The cords, wax, guns/armour plate are all a slightly different shade to each other. I've chosen to go with purple for the gems and wax to break it up.

Left is golds, gems and some glazes on the reds and blacks. Might finish tonight but my partner is off tonight and we're watching Desolation of Smaug. We'll see if my insomnia plays up or not.

@Brother Excedis, Thanks dude, I should mention metallics are hands down my weakest area so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

@LutherMax Sanguinius might be proud but Corax is giving me the ol stink eye smile.png

As for airbrush, I personally haven't used them through an airbrush but I do know they are designed for both. I heard Alfonso Giraldes, one of the developers for them, talk about how they use super fine pigments. I can say they dry faster than any paint I've used before (GW, Vall, P3) so if it was me I would definitely look at getting a thinner or retarder for airbrushing.

So slightly annoying, my fault not hers, turns out my friend has sold on her blood angels. Doh! Still going to finish them but where they end up is still undecided.

Blarg, finally completed my test figure. Took allot longer than expected but now I've got a rough plan of attack so things should move along faster. Still undecided on the black though. This guy is without glazes which I might leave and check him against with to see which works.

Oh and Firepower, I added a couple of pics just for you. See if you can guess which ones.

Dodgy Cam pictures but my buddy will bring his super duper camera when squad is done.

As always any comments or critiques are most welcome. I'm all about learning. Keep on happy painting.
