Stormfang Gunship - Viper pattern *WIP*

When I first saw the Stormfang, I didn't really like it, yet I was determined to make it look a bit better and decided to get one and covert it slightly. The angled front reminded me of the Viper from Battlestar Galactica, which gave me the idea for the look I wanted. My plan was to move the wings to the lower engine, which adds a bit of width due to it being bigger, and add a tail fin to the cockpit roof. Also, ditch the fins on the froward hull.

First things first, it's a really nice kit. Easy to put together, plenty of weapon options and there are tons of wolf bits and icons that you can add. I've avoided adding any shields, pelts or chain totems as to be honest I imagine these getting frazzled during atmospheric entry :) I'll just add a couple of the wolf head/skull icons

One of the other things I noticed is that the side of the hull has the cool interior doors similar to other kits, so instead of sponsons you can add troop doors and relocate the side weapons

To add the vertical tail fin, i used one of the canards that are meant to be on the forward hull. I didn't want to add these anyway so I just filed the bottom of one flat and pinned it to the roof. The roof has a inset section where the air intake is supposed to go, so took the two halves of the air intake and chopped the sides off, so I just had the base of it and glued it in place. I then had to file it flat and drill two holes for the pins

To lower the wings, I added a small strip of plastic from the bottom of a snap fit mini, and glued it to the gap in the underside of the wing where it glues to the hull. I then glued it in place to the lower engine with the help of a pin. With the strip of plastic, there is plenty of surface area for the glue to take hold. The upper engine has some plastic ribs to support the wings so these were filed off.

This is the finished result - quite a simple conversion but I think with the wings in the lower position it looks much better, and gets away from the dogs head look. I also thing it looks a bit more streamlined without the forward fins/canards on the side of the hull

Will add some more pics when I get the base oat done and the Pilot painted up. Also need to add a couple of Space Wolf icons somewhere

Cheers

Brilliant stuff there, amazing how a few small changes can really snap the model into focus and turn it from something a little silly to something far more rugged and threatening.

Shame that all these new models seem to have to be 'fixed' in the first place of course, but  thank you for stepping into the breach!

Thanks guys :)

Been a while since I watched BSG but it looks very reminiscent of the Blackbird! Looks great.

Yeah, it kinda does, I'd almost forgotten about that ship they built . Need to watch that episode again :)

Really well done. Like the conversion. Haven't got mine yet but was thinking based on the pictures of just flipping the engines around so the bigger part is up top & the wings are underneath but I really do like the look you have with yours. One of the others has already figured out how to magnetize it so he can have either version. Hoping I can combine his work & yours. And has been said. Consider this idea stolen Thanks & looking forward to the finished model.

You've done a good job with this conversion.  I'm seriously considering buying this kit to see if I can make a Caestus Assault Ram out of it.  Would you mind posting some pics of the pilot bits?  I would like to see what the helmet and chest piece look.

Thanks all for the kind feedback

@Lord Andreas Go for it buddy :)

As requested, pics of the Iron Priest pilot after undercoating and a base coat of The Fang. Apologies for the crappy pics

I'm painting him up now, will post more tomorrow

This is my plane, I can already see it finished in my head, I just need the $$$ for two kits and an eBay'd Storm Talon.

Cheers,

That's a good idea Jono.  I'm thinking that it might be cheaper to just buy a Caestus and be done with it but I have an overwhelming NEED to kit bash it.  If you do buy two I'd buy the extra Iron Priest pilot.  I need to mold that head and shoulder pad and build some sweet looking Priests for my son.

Cyrox, thank you for the pic.  I'm off to look for a loose Pilot so that I can convert an Iron Priest on foot.

Hell yeah.

I was hoping to see a stormfang without those awful forward canards and that alone makes a huge difference to the model, but your repositioning work on the wings really "fixes" what was bugging me about the whole engine section of the thing. I thought it might have been the position of the thrusters themselves, initially, but I see now that it was just that the wings were too high. Excellent work, I'll be doing something similar.

The viper dorsal fin (nice work on that, too) also illustrates that the air intake was kind of bulky and skewed the silhouette of the stormfang in an odd way by facing forwards, this gives it much more of a sense of momentum.

Yeah I thought the air intake was a bit pointless, especially as the engine intakes can bring in plenty of air for the engines and whatever else is needed. Not only that, there is an air intake on the underside of the model

I want to bring this up again, so it regains attention.
And because I don't want to start a new thread, looking like it was my idea, because I'm working on a de-wolfed (...see what I did there?) version myself.
Behold! Stormfang [Hidden] Viper pattern!
