Dead Men Walking on a Dead World

Greetings everyone!

Time to get more blood in this forum.  This will be my WIP tracking thread of the C:AM forces I'm working on in the hopes that we will one day get playable chaos guard once again.

Here is what I had from the One-for-All event that was hosted a few months ago:

Here we go. My Astra Militarum stationed as planetary defense on the shrine world of Constantin's Rest. Rumored to be the final resting place of a great hero from the age of the Horus Heresy, the shrine world is about 50% churches and 50% graveyards. A sort of elephant graveyard for the faithful.

An observant soul would have noticed the Astartes gunship land at
the governor’s estate. That same observant soul might have noticed
that only a few days after that strange bunch of Astartes arrived
there was an abrupt change of government. Another observant soul
might have noticed some of the local clergy were missing from their
daily posts. Unfortunately for the populace of Constantin’s Rest,
there was not an observant soul among them.

When the Shepherds of Rot came, there was no resistance.
They captured the shrine world of Constantin’s Reach with not a
shot fired. Lord Skeletus himself and a squad of Plague Marines
landed at the governor’s palace. Quickly dispatching the follower
of the corpse-emperor, they replaced him with a devout follower of
the Plague God. From there, they went on to raid the monastery of the
Sisters of the Violet Rose. The sisters contingent, no more than a
token defense force at best, stood no chance of surviving the blight
grenades thrown through their chapel’s windows while they were at
daily prayer. With Nurgle’s blessed rot settling into their bodies,
the planet belonged to Chaos.

As for the population, it was easy to turn the multitude of
faithful devoted to the veneration of the dead into worshipers of the
very same. Apostate preachers spread across the planet bringing the
joyful news of eternal life and freedom from pain. The regiment of
Astra Militarum station on the world as a planetary defense force,
under sole control of the planetary governor after the demise of the
Ecclesiarchy forces, was easily swayed into the support of the Dark
Gods......

Now the Black Templars and Ultramarines attempt to rally the
remaining citizens loyal to the throne to drive the invaders off this
sacred world.

And as for Darien....

Darien looked to the bright morning
sky to see little flecks of black floating through the clouds. Since
the Shepherds arrived, Astartes gunships and drop craft were a common
sight among the normally peaceful clouds of Constantin's Reach. But
these, he knew, were not the ships of those blessed by Nurgle.

Darien had always had a particular
knack for self preservation. Growing up on a shrine world, there are
only two paths for a young man. Join the clergy and become a man of
faith, or join the Guard and die a lonely miserable death. Neither
of these options appealed to Darien, but after some bribes and
politicking, he managed to land himself a role in the Planetary
Defense Force on his home planet. He was nice and far from any
possible action.

During his induction ceremony, his
platoon was paraded around the governor palace, and Darien as
awestruck by the opulence. He resolved then and there to rise as far
in the Guard as he could. He had made it all the way into the
platoon command squad when youthful enthusiasm and dreams began to
age away. Secretly not content with his station, he performed the
“grin-and-bear-it” that is so popular in the galaxy. When the
agent of Nurgle came to his world, Darien accepted them with open
arms. Here was his ticket to eternal life, no pain, and favor in the
eyes of his new patron god.

In the first skirmish with the Imperial
reinforcements, Darien took a las round to the shoulder. Rather than
have it treated, he let it fester and the Plaguefather has even saw
fit to bless him with a little of his sacred Rot.

I'm currently planning an armored veteran force to represent the elite guard of the local Ecclesiarchy.  The Nurgle marine faction on the planet staged a coup d'etat, killing the primary leaders of the planet and replacing them with chaos sympathizers.  They then corrupted the small PDF force from the top down.  I'm going to model light on the corruption since this is a relatively new chaos outbreak in the timeline.  Coincidence has the imperial forces responding within 6 months of the coup.

Finally, proof on concept mini:

Reminds me of the Brotherhood of Nod, I like the vision you've got but I do feel the concept model lacks definition on the black armour, helmet and lasgun. I also think that the red eyes need added depth i.e. light reflections and highlights.

I do like the limited palette approach but I also feel that another colour is needed to bring the model to life however you may get away without doing that by jazzing that black armour up with some highlights.

Great to see another project log on here mate, and I really like the vision and direction you have for these.

Will those awesome cultists you put up in the ideas and conversions thread be part of this army? They look suitably like followers of nurgle and would make great conscripts/frateris militia - the personal bodyguard of some high ranking members of the ecclesiarchy normally just drawn from particularly zealous members of the populace or servants and other low ranking members of the imperial cult.

I like the model, it's a good start for a test mini, although I will say Moloney has a fair point about the armour and eyes. I have to say though, you did a great job of the black, it's so smooth and flat, not a streak in it. I also like your choice of head, and the extra effort you made shaving off imperial symbols, all are very characterful touches.

An alternative to highlighting the armour would be to free hand symbols on in places. Even if it was only a squad number on on shoulder pad and the Nurgle symbol/PDF forces badge on the other. White is a good colour for this.

As for the eyes, a mix of the red on your eyes and an orange would be a nice highlighting colour and a small dot of white in the far corner is a simple light reflection.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of this army and how it progresses. And if you're interested in expanding on your fluff, the Daemonic pact in the chaos forum is open to traitor guard too and great fun. Theme this time is Characters - so either a HQ or sergeant model.

Thanks for the advice guys. The eyes are Tamiya Clear Red, so they have some natural highlights not picked up by the carmera. I did TCR over a GW red, but I'm gonna try TCR over white and see if i can get a brighter, more highlighted effect. If not, then its back to traditional eye highlights.

The armor does need some love. I'll pick up some dark grey and try to do some edge highlights. Not something I'm good at ph34r.png

@Dark_Apostle: The cultists are aimed primarily for use as cultists in my/my gf's Nurgle themed CSM, but can easily do double duty as conscripts. I have 60+ catachans that I found in a box on my recent move and may some day be employed as a horde army. They need to be striped down, chaosified, and repainted. For now I'm trying to focus on the armored company list. I'd like to actually start playing it rather just have cool models collecting dust.

I'm not dead!  But I did change my paint scheme.

This will most likely be my Mutant Overlord instead of the herald of Nurgle that he was purchased to be.

Anyway I think he turned out well!

I'll breathe some life into this thread soon, but here's a shot from my game today.  180 renegades arrayed against... a whopping THREE demon models.  The mission was the relic and after a long fight and lots of dancing to stay away from my guns, the game ended in a tie as the enemy warlord (carrying the relic) was struck down by a lasgun barrage immediately before the game ended.

I played in our store's Christmas tournament this year. It was a ton of fun and gave me a ton of experience with the Renegades. The rules for the tourney demanded 750 points of only models with the Infantry type. So I knew I was at a disadvantage because my options were so limited. So I decided to field all of my infantry models. ALL of them. Even though I went 0 for 3, I got a ton of moral victories watching my opponents faces as I put 135 models on the table. Here are some pictures taken by the event coordinator of my army:
