Long time no see.

I found some hobby time over the school holidays and finally finished building the Kill Team of 8. I took KrautScientist's advice and changed the squad leader's CCW for just the cleaver, as recommended. I like it much better like this.

I also gave the sharpshooter – the guy with the Sniper USR (although that's a bit ridiculous with just 18" range, but anyway) – a scope and a bipod. The volley gunner got a bipod too. Other than that, I lost one model over the process of cutting it up to fix the torso that I was somehow unhappy with. As I was short of two models anyway I just threw together a new one. The three of them feel somewhat uninspired, but I like to think they'll blend in with the rest reasonably well once painted.

In the meantime priming has commenced. I understand this is just in time for ELT ... and I'm seriously considering to just pledge them, you know, just to put myself under a bit of pressure. I did do some experiments with cork for basing and tried a Martian paint scheme too, believing it fits well with the paint scheme I have in mind. I'll keep you posted in here, but I don't expect to share any measurable progress any time soon.

As always: let me know what you think, and thanks for reading. Enjoy the hobby! :)

Oh, and I've got a first hint at what I plan to be a small allied CSM contingent to share. I started building this for Daemon Forge 1, you know, when it was about CSM sorcerers about three months ago. The speed with which I work is absolutely laughable – by the end of DF1 I got this far. (There wasn't any hope to finish it, but I meant to at least finish building my sorcerer and share it as an expression of my appreciation for the event. Well, I didn't even get this far. I'm still to finish it. But anyway.)

I'm not sure what kind of force weapon he's having. I'm thinking of like a force stave or something, and while it doesn't have a power weapon blade really, well, I think I can get away with painted OSL on it?

Thanks for watching.

The traitor soldiers are looking excellent -- don't be so hard on yourself, they are not boring at all! In fact, seeing your update made me get off my arse and finally finish the fith member for my own "Not Tempestus Scions" ;)

The shortened weapon on the squadleader works so much better! I find the most important thing for Traitor Guard is to have them look suitably evil anc chaotic, yet also realistic enough to be plausible. Before, that model looked like it would have on hell of a job juggling that immense polearm. Now it looks like a tough as nails veteran, which is great!

Keep up the excellent work! :)

Thanks for looking, Olis and KrautScientist! Yes, I'm using a tentacle maker. It's been a game changer for me really.

Painting of the Scions has commenced ... and has immediately paused again. I decided to take the opportunity of ETL to paint up my Plague Hulk (that doubles as Defiler and Soul Grinder at times) – after it's been sitting on my shelf for some good 2 years or so.

But I have the flamer Scion almost finished, at least the rear. He's making an appearance in my new signature. I deliberately deviated a bit from the paint scheme I have in place for the lot. But perhaps you can already see where I'm trying to go at ...

Minor update: I got distracted from this – well, I actually needed a break – and painted the Plague Hulk that's been sitting on my shelf for about two years, well, for Chaos:

It was great fun, but I'm happy and excited to be back to my Renegade Scions now. As usual, progress is small, but I actually started painting. I got most of the base colors down and experimented with masking fluid for a chipping effect. For a first humble attempt I'm rather happy with it, although I'm afraid it doesn't quite show on the pictures. For some reason I started with two specialists: the flamer guy and the sniper. Both are coming along nicely, and while I feel there's heaps of room for improvement, I'm enjoying myself so far.

Next I'll be painting the brass/bronze metallics properly, pick details, and wash the white carapace armor. As usual, thanks a lot for looking, and let me know what you think.

They all look great. The plague hulk especially is beautiful, in a disgusting kind of way. I'm also still very curious as to what you're going to do with the straight greenstuff tentacles coming out of the lower part of the guns...

Thanks for watching, Augustus b'Raass. At last I get to answer your question after the greenstuff tentacles. (Sorry for the late reply; I didn't check this thread until a few days ago.) I've got my Kill Team of Renegade Scions finished in time for the ETL:

I used the greenstuff tentacles to build the cables that feed energy into the hellguns (or hot-shot lasguns). The actual Scion models came with plastic cables that fit into the power packs of their backpacks, but, rigid as they are, that meant some obvious limitations for posing. Hence I cut them off and replaced them with more flexible greenstuff.

Overall speaking though, and looking at the eight models as they are now, I'm feeling a little but unsure if my paint scheme works, or, rather, if it works on the Martian bases as intended. It was surprisingly difficult to get clear, focused, and true images of my models – the white balance was particularly difficult –, and the models end up looking much more, ... I don't know, tone on tone as they do in real life. But, still, I'm not sure if they stand out from, and contrast with, the red-brown bases well enough? I don't even know if that's what I'm trying to say?

So, yeah ... let me know what you think – and what you think I mean?

I'm reasonably happy with the concept so far though. I feel I'm where I wanted to be (only much, much later than anticipated) before rolling it out on a larger scale. I'm massively excited to put my paints away and get out my bits box – and throw together HQ and troop choices for an actual playable army. Regarding the paint scheme though. As I said, let me know what you think.

Superb conversion! In my opinion your paint scheme works really well with the bases, or rather: especially with the bases! They add just the right amount of colour to your otherwise quite limited colour range. I'd keep everything the way it is :)

Thanks, Kythnos. I'm thinking of going a bit more aggressive with the verdigris effect (which is next to impossible to see on the above pictures), and on larger flat areas in the future – as I think a bit more color won't hurt and blue would contrast nicely with the Martian red bases. We'll see.

I think you shouldn't worry, as these are really rather lovely, and the gritty realism definitely suits the squad! If you are looking for a little additional pop, I'd suggest painting the eye lenses (on models that actually have eye lenses, that is) either in a striking blue or, possibly even better, in the pretty bright orange you used on your first test cultist, back on page one of this thread.

But make no mistake, those are beautiful models, even now. I envy you, you know ;)

Thanks heaps for the compliment, KrautScientist. I'm a great admirer of your work and your approval means a lot to me.

I'll take your advice and put some more effort into the lenses. It's next to impossible to see on the pictures above, but I eventually abandoned the yellow-orange of my tester for a very bright green – as I felt that contrasts better with the rest of the palette. Blue sounds intriguing too and I might actually just try a few variants, yellow-orange, green, blue, or try taking a better picture and photoshop it up, to see which works best.

Again, thanks!

Personally speaking, I am in love with using Vallejo's Magic Blue (with a bit of white) for eye lenses etc. It ends up looking *very* striking, though, so it might be a bit of an acquired taste.

Whatever route you choose, I am very much looking forward to seeing the next update! This thread always makes me want to go back to my own Traitor Guard and add something to them, which I guess should give you a good idea about how inspirational your stuff is ;)
