Salamander Scout Tank Discussion

One of my favourite tanks.

The UK's MoD is set to sign a deal to make these over the next few years. Look familiar?

I guess they are taking over the contract from Forgeworld as they are no longer available cry.gifcry.gifcry.gif

Does anyone use Salamanders, or the command Salamander in their games?

I have always viewed the salamander as a Universal Carrier http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Carrier

The one in the article still looks like the standard AFV Warrior or Bradley ( or Chimera ;)) but a little smaller and aimed at recce rather than troop transportation

To answer your question, I don't have any but wouldn't mind getting one as a command vehicle for fluff reasons.

I would say the Univercal carrier would be the centaur (especialy when it had the gun mount rule.)

But I have just started using the command salamander in my games. So far, its usful for when your orders dont work as a negative 1 to a units coer save is great and has the ability to tank shock from accross the board.

I have just looked the rules up for them. I think forgeworld missed a trick or two here though.

Fast attack is too crowded for scout salamanders I feel though I understand why it is a FA slot. Better than a scout sentinel with AC though.

The command one should have had a transport ability so it could have been a dedicated for either a CCS or a LC. Or if not having the -1 to cover should have been able to work all the time. Not like its the most threatening tank of all time.

Imagine a combat CCS jumping out into combat from one of these. Amazing. ...

How would you go about that?

I'm hoping it's just a temporary removal from the website (a la the Marineburg Land Ship) given that it is an older cast these days, but it may well have made way for the Horus Heresy range.

Alternatively, the Solar Auxilia have a rumoured scout tank. So maybe the Salamander is getting a new model/counts as?

AV 12/10/10 BS 3 HP 3

  • 1-3 Fast Attack choice
  • Scout, Tank, Fast, Open-topped, Amphibious
  • Autocannon, Heavy Bolter
  • Searchlight, Smoke Launchers
  • Usual spread of upgrades

Salamander Command Tank

As above with the following changes:

  • Single model, Elites slot
  • BS 4
  • Heavy Flamer instead of an Autocannon (which can be upgraded to another Heavy Bolter)
  • Auspex Surveyor - tank has Night Vision and in lieu of shooting, it can reduce the cover save of an enemy unit within 18" by 1.

Griffon Heavy Mortar Carrier

AV 12/10/10 BS 3 HP 3

  • Single model, Heavy Support slot
  • Tank, Open-topped
  • Griffon Heavy Mortar (12-48", STR 6, AP 4, Ordnance 1, Barrage, 5" blast), Heavy Bolter, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers
  • Accurate Bombardment
  • Usual upgrades

here's my WIP griffon/salamander;

it's rather easy, first you put paint on all the raised areas inside the "crew compartment", push some paper against it and you then have the outlines on which your platicard construction will have to fit. From that point you can make the armoured compartment in any shape you want. the floot is just another piece of plasticard made to fit

Salamander Scouts are one of the best units available for IG.

Outflank them to get:

  • rear shots on vehicles,
  • grab objectives in your opponents back-field
  • tank shock back-field objective holders off the back of the board,
  • get behind units to pick out heavy/special weapons,
  • force assaulting armies to turn one or more units around to go back to deal with them, and
  • ram vehicles in the backside from off the board edge (ramming 2 into the back end of a wave serpent who cannot jink and forcing the troops inside to emergency disembark because they can't use the hatch never gets old).

I always take at least 2 in any IG army.

That alone tempts me to get some! :D

Edit: didn't FW used to make a model of the Salamander? I can't find it on their website now.

I emailed forgeworld and this was sadly the reply.....

Unfortunately the Salamander models are not currently available. Our storage space for stock is regrettably finite and so from time to time we have to review our ranges and take the difficult decision to remove some items to make the necessary room for new items. In this instance those models were some of those and we removed them when the last of the remaining stock was sold so please accept our apologies. This does not necessarily mean they will never return but it won’t be available for the foreseeable future.

We don’t currently announce when a model is removed from sale as we’ve found in the past that this creates more problems than it solves. Our stock records can take time to update and when we have announced that a product was being removed, we often received more orders than we had stock remaining.

This has left us with disappointed customers before and as you can appreciate we only want to give the best service possible. We do what we feel is best for all our customers, in this case only selling items that are available and in stock.

If there is anything further we can do to assist you, or if you have any queries about the information we have requested or provided, please telephone us.

Regards,

Forge World
