Hi Dreadnaughty.

 

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately there isnt too much I can do with the cloaks, as Recon Marines come with cloaks presculpted on by FW. The issue I have is trying to make a camo cloak look "camo" without either being cartoony and totally out of place, or too muted and then the model becomes an indistinct blob, so getting highlighting right is a challenge.

 

Hoping it has enough of a highlight to stand out, without it looking OTT

 

I have to say it really shows the prep work is key to a decent model though. These are a couple of years old, and you can see how |I have damaged and rushed them to paint without doing flash removal etc, really compromises the overall model.

 

Tip of the day, prep, clean and make sure you are 100% happy with the build, as it will show through if you don't. Will remember for the next 5

Well got them 100% done now. Highlighted up the brass and found because I had used the same base for the gold, ten te gold merged into the brass, so re-did the gold and did some finishing off and tidy-up work.

 

Now need to do a short story piece for tale of gamers

Recon pack Bjorn, were instrumental in the early stages of the War on Prospero. Tasked with infiltrating ahead of the main battle foce Hvarl unleashed his recon packs to gather intelligence and sow  confusion amongst the Prosperine ranks.

Pack leader Bjorn

 

Bjorns pack were also tasked with tracking down Magnus and bringing him low. They did not succeed intheir ultimate goal, however they were the key to survival for many of Hvarls packs. Able to identify warp gates and areas of ambush, Bjorns team were able to launch counter ambushes or surprise attacks, allowing stranded Wolves to escape.

The Pack

 

Their tactics were so ruthlessly successful that a cadre of Thousand Sons from the order of the blind were solely tasked to hunting Bjorn and his pack.

 

Ultimately they survived the Maelstrom which was Prospero, and were later dispersed amongst other packs to pass on their hard-fought knowledge in fighting brother Astartes.

The first 5, the 2 rocket launchers will get replaced with plasma guns, the banner bearer on the right was a gift, so he shall stay as he is, maybe add a weapon to him to keep in theme

Addiion of axes an knives to show they have an extra attack for the close combat weapon.

 

They are a lot brighter than my other Wolves, I guess I need a lighter touch for trying zenithal, I think it is. Fingers crossed the washes will tone it down.

In HH the rocket launchers with suspensor webs are about 50 points a pop, so while good cost a lo. Also with streamlining, I will want to run these as grey hunters in 40K, and they cannot carry rocket launchers, so plasma it shall be!!

Thanks Ryltar. Weirdly enough, faces are the things I find hardest to paint, so I take that as a compliment. Its probably why so many of my 40K Wolves lay half-finished

 

So kicking on a bit. I dulled down the armour with a few washes and began blocking in basic colours to get a feel for the models.

The big question just now is: Do I go with the bronze plate on the back packs and steel rims on the shoulder pads, or do I go with a dark metal plate on the back pack and gold rims on the shoulder pads like the Seekers?

Another quick update.

 

Someone pinched my corner so was painted in semi-darkness. Managed to snap the pictures after they left. Paint is a bit patchy plus he bronze & gold are coming through looking quite same-y.

 

I also looked through my old pictures and switched the plate on the backpack to steel, so it matches the rest of the army.

Tried making them look like they were starting to go grey, which is why the hair is lighter close to the face rather than the tips. Almost as if they are transitioning to veteran/ Grey Hunter status.

 

Was a fun experiment, not sure how well I pulled it off.

So I should be working on my tale of hobbyists, but motivation is killing me, as is my wife and her   dissertation.

 

So I started on a few bits

 

First up is Hvarl, Jarl of the 4th great company

 

I have based him off of Polux. He is quite a bit larger than a normal marine and same height as the Praetor in cataphractii armour.

I used a BoP tartaros as Hvarl is in Tartaros armour.

 

Early days, but this is the jist of it so far.

Laurels and fist will go to make way for some norse runes or knots, and the script on the legs will be filled with liquid green stuff

 

I also considered using the fist for mounting the Heavy bolter and this is sort of where i got to.

I had some blight launcherd from soe Grave Wardens? but I feel like it is missing something. I like that the launcher has 2 mini drums and see that working well, but should I switch them out for one big HB drum? Alternatively I can see if I have any SW assault cannons kicking about and try to jury rig and ammo pack and belt feed, however the launcher comes with a mini drum attached so very careful cutting would be required (looking at my thumb should show you how good at delicate I am  )

I am also considering shortening the barrel as it looks overlong on the arm very impractical, almost wish it was just a combi bolter like Logans. I cannot push it further back as it will interfere with the pads, so shortening the barrel might be the best option. Drilling the holes dos not really help disguise what it started life as does it?

 

Next is a moritat

 

Decided to change things up and got my hands on a vexillary, so decided he would make a nice moritat. Hated the pose as he felt like he was leaning backwards so clipped the rock underfoot to give him a more dynamic position. After chatting with the guys, the concensus was to go with the upgrade wolf helm. I am going with the twin plasma loadout but may magnetise the wrists so I can run twin volkite instead.

 

Also thinned and cut down the neck armour as it was way too restrictive to fit a helmet in.

Main issues with this guy will likely be head positioning and arms. Do I want him looking straight ahead both arms forwards blazing away, or do I want him looking to the side, 1 arm aiming and 1 in a more neutral position? Thoughts on this would be appreciated

 

3rd conversion for the day is the VIGILATOR

 

I really like the moritat models spec ops vibe, so decided to make him a vigilator. again load-out and posing is where I am struggling.

 

Do I go for an agressive (ish) pose with CC weapon and pistol, with boltgum strapped across his back or do I hve him carrying a specially modified bolter with other gear stowed?

 

This is where I am at for now.

I like where Hvarl is going. I think the problem with the heavy bolter is the barrel is too long. Normally heavy bolters have longer box bodies with a snub nose barrel. I think if you boxed up most of the long barrel and just left the little snub part that you have drilled through it will start to look more heavy bolter-y.

 

I like the rifle for the Vigilator along with the wolf claw.

curious how you will base your troops. basing can either take away from the model or add from it. I love the colour scheme of your army so far. not sure about the vigilator, sadly you're limited/restricted due to the pose of the main body... but once you have a better idea of what you want from him you willl figure it out eventually. personally he's better off with guns. I'm also working on Hvarl haha but I kept mine as simple as possible keeping close to his fluff as possible. Just waiting on an arm but. I'm not a huge fan of tartaros armour.

Hey HvitrValdyr Yep might stick with the gun and utilise the claw, I have several sets.  also cut the barrel right back see my pics and notes below for more of an idea :)

 

Maverik. Glad you like the paint scheme :) I am a big fan of your kitbashes and wish I had your imagination t do what you do. I looked at Inferno and the fluff for Hvarl s that he is thorough leaves nothing alive, he is slighlty crazy but very wily, therefore respected and he loves challenges and head taking.

 

The simplest version I could think of would be to just use Logan and that though had occurred to e, but I have had this conversion idea in my head for a while.

 

To be fair I have decided to drop my minimal approach and try to learn how to do conversion/kitbashing thus giving me some distinctive models to lead the Rout.

 

As fr basing, I had 2 ideas, Clear acrylic bases so they blend in to any board or go with the sand marble look that I used on Russ and the Leviathan dreadnought. It is fairly neutral plus themed more towards Prospero. I had at first considered snow/Fenris bases, but everyone does them and I was worried the grey would get kinda lost in all the white and stuff.

 

Specifically for Hvarl, looking at putting a T-son corpse underfoot plus some rubble

 

Anyway here is more of an update

Also tried the arm out, seems a it skinny especially up top. Will try to smooth the gun to the fist, but otherwise I am wondering if I should get rid of it and use a cut down autocannon from the BoP set. What d you think? I like the fact that the HB is small enough that he could theoretically use both hands to wield his axe, but.... Well let me know what you think about it.

 

I also worked on a Master of Signals.

 

I thought abut the Seer from Vikings as a Caser of Runs, due to his role in the show, however I decided that as the Seer was for want of a better word, not combat worthy, I figured  a better role for the Seer would be as a MoS he could still see al and know all, just not in the mystical sense. Help to guide the Rout and call down the wrath of the old gods :D

Still needs finished up, considering giving him a raven and a staff or maybe just stick to the pointing arm from the MoS. Cloak and head are from Cypher and is giving a pretty distinctive outline, which I will need to change a we bit. Maybe add the MoS head and make a home made hood?

Havent decided if he will be a 13th Company rune priest or wolf priest yet. Do you like the spear? Using Kharns arm with molocs spear nd a custodes lance for the tip. Could call it a staff or some such if a caster of runes, or swittch to a crozius, maul or ax if I go with wolf priest.

 

I plan to make him look a little more "feral" by adding a wolf head and some more pelts

Yep I most certainly did... only problem is that it now just looks like Cypher with a new remote control.

 

I have considered removing Cyphers head, but like the cowled effect.

 

Any ideas how to make him look less Cypher-like?

Honestly, I think the only way to get rid of the Cypher look is to lose the head. I'm just not entirely sure which head to use. I've never been a fan of the bulbous MoS heads.

Yeah, it is a bit of a pain, and the head is rather bulbous. I do have some seeker heads. Went for a different approach and thought a psyber raven might be a good idea

Get rid of the raven, it doesn't flow with the motion and his cape. If you need a good head for him, I'd suggest the blight knight head with the moose antlers and chainlink face. The hood matches with the flow of his cape. You can either chop the antlers or keep it. Just a suggestion but the flow works from just seeing how you have him now. Just get rid of the raven. Wash with gryphonne sepia

Draw in hair lines wit thinned xv88

closer to roots do a 1:1 mix ushabti bone and xv88

same again with ushabti bone, then a tiny dab of whitscar by the skin, so it looks like the white is just growing in.i

Maverik, raven gone, I do not have a blight king head, so may keep it as is. lmost gave him a staff to show age/ loss of combat effectiveness. I could go down the route of giving him a bionic leg or arm.

Thegn/ Praetor to lead Varagyr. Always loved the imagery of the Varagyr swathed in pelts and carrying great harpoon/spears. So decided to pinch this from the Priest. Kept him similarly armed to the Varagyr, but may strap a combi-weapon to his side for versatility.. Thoughts?

Thegn for the tartaros. Do I ditche the banner idea and leave the pose so he is eting readyto smash someone or keep him as a bnner bearer so he could be a commad squad member. He has Polux's combi melta, but the banner stops me giving hi a chain fist (could change to claw though).

Tartaros squad are plasma blaster and chainfist + 3x combi-melta and chainFist or 3x combi plasma and chain fist

Had an idea yesterday while snoozing on the helicopter ride to work!

I hate the front doors on the Mastodon, plus my hack job to get them to shut looks awful.

 

So maybe put a Mastodon door shaped plate over the front, leaving slots for the melta. I could leave it as a thin plate, so the frag launchers could fire throug it raining death on the enemy, or I could make it and fill the gaps so it is a huge solid door.

 

Maybe make it look like the doors to Valhalla in Vikings or something similar like an image of Yggdrasill?

To get over the annoyance of the decals and potentially ruining my leviathans

 

Getting the basic colours down on Brands Wolf Guard. Will shorten the hammer later and make him look like he is holding halfway down the haft.

Pads, shield and backpack are blu-tacked on. Not sure about the steel on the faceplate, might go to black or grey.
