Casual 30k Hobby Challange. Month 2

Fire Golem

Recommended Posts

Excellent that you are joining in One-eye. Your White Scars are stunning so I'll look forward to seeing what you do with a Sicaran.

Glad there is so much progress already! Great to see your first night Lord models Fire Golem, and Atia and Thunor are impressively quick!

Here is a WIP of my first 3 Pyroclasts. The picture was a little rushed, but I'll sort a better one with some natural light when they are done.

So they have been base coated and washed, with the green highlights done for the middle guy. A fair bit more to do though! I need to paint a lot this month... there are just too many traitors (even traitor Raven Guard! Who knew?)

Force organisation goes somewhat like this, though not finalised :

hq ~(still needing titles (barbaric or civil?)), sub leaders of separate areas~ (line command designation leading talons(tribal markings on some but all with appropriate markings from extermination)). talons: breachers~ civilized and ornate (maybe demi cloaks, regal blue as spot colour (still lacking a group name). terminators~ based off the dornishmen (spear and shield, cloth wrappings etc). recon~ nights watch, all in black (as far as possible), no special markings, seen as a penitent group, formally known as the crows watch. Assault~ no group yet (thinking ironborn (lightning raids etc)). tactical~ no ideas regarding them as of yet. bikes and jet bikes~ khasaalrs and khals. thats enough. Elite shooters~ same as tacs.

(any help would be greatly appreciated)

See, now I'm thinking Sons of Horus and Alpha Legion, and some Night Lords later, instead of NL and AL, and some Sons later... I already have 30 SoH shoulder pads, I love their models (something about the style of their armour), their colour scheme, their brutality. Seriously I think I have a disease.

Oh and TotR those are looking awesome :) I didn't realise you were doing traitor RG. That's a cool idea.

Kor'Vesh has the truth of it, fire golem. Often you won't fully get into a project until you pick up your brushes and get to work. I didn't really start to enjoy my World Eaters until I started painting them. Truth be told, they were one of my least favourite legions and, when FW's Betrayal came out, I was initially torn between Sons of Horus and Death Guard. But then I snatched up a bargain on eBay that included Angron, some Rampagers and some other bits and pieces. I built the Rampagers, had a crack at painting them, had fun, and then got absolutely hooked when I started reading AD-B's Betrayer.

If you can get over the initial 'are these guys that I just spent a heap of money on going to look any good once I've finished painting them' hurdle, you'll be off like a shot.

On the other hand, you might figure out a way of painting one of the schemes that's easy and gives you good results, or at least results that you like. Like this guy!

Apologies for the slightly washed-out photo. Taken in direct sunlight this morning and slightly over exposed for some reason. He's still a WIP, but this is one of my Seekers. I've done him first because I couldn't remember exactly how I'd done the last ones I'd painted back in December/January, and while the yellow's not quite as strong on this guy, I'm pretty happy with him.

For those that are interested, there's not really any actual paint on him aside from the weathering (Mechanicus Grey Base) and Boltgun Metal on the combi-bolter/power plant. Everything else is either a wash (Army Painter Strong Tone and Dark Tone FTW!) or a glaze, which makes life really easy.

I'm a bit worried about painting to be honest. I've never really painted before and I'm worried im gonna cock up my expensive models.

That Imperal Fist(?) looks awesome, especially as it's all washes and glazes.

Just do it! My first models were miles away from my Death Guard, it's just all about practice and the right techniques (since my land raider achilles i use a sponge for durt and paint damage and it's awesome and easier than a brush). F.e. I build and painted my first army together with my father. We never used highlites on our Dark Angels but we have fun with them and that's the core of painting.

@tears of the raven: what do you use for the capes on your recons?

@StruManChu: nice work on him, keep it up =)

I'd try and keep your coats thin-ish (I must admit I don't water down my paints [new GW range] even though everyone says it the first bit of advice).  But if you keep your coats thin, you can repaint stuff, or touch them up as your skills develop.  There are some of my FW marines that have been Luna Wolves, World Eaters, Night Lords and are now Infernal Guard.  You do lose detail if you keep going over but it's not that bad, especially if it's the first few.  I generally keeping doing one guy over and over until I'm happy with the general scheme. That way if I 'ruin' one of them, it's only one (although none have been 'ruined').

It is amazing how quickly you can develop when doing it though, so don't be disheartened when you look at your first attempt and then some of the awesome stuff on here [i'm sure some of it is photoshopped].  They can inspire and dishearten at the same time :)

Thanks for the tips guys. I know you should water paints down, in my very limited painting experience I either did them too thick or watered them down too much, so they didn't cover the base coat at all. And I agree I just need to get stuck in. So I'll order some paints I need this weekend and hopefully start next week :)

Some of the stuff on here is definitely Inspiring/Disheartening! Mines gonna look embarrassing next to other people in this thread haha

Brothers!! It seems the Emperor has smiled upon me, in His benevolence he has seen fit to have the administratum (HM revenue and customs) re-emberce me for over paid tithes. Bring on the Landraider (and possibly my last FW order in a while so lets make it a biggy) :D

fire golem - Don't worry about mistakes bro. You live in the UK, which means you have access to the world's best hobby tool.

Fairy Power Spray.

If you make a huge, god-awful, irredeemable mistake, dunk your mini in a tub of Fairy Power Spray liquid (take the top off and pour the stuff out) for half a day and then attack it with an old/cheap toothbrush. I kid you not, I've used it so many times on every material that GW/FW use, and it's absolute gold. No amount of paint will escape your bristled justice.

We're here to encourage you and see your development, Fire Golem.

While they may always look 'sub-par' to you, we who haven't spent innumerable hours with the minis in our hands working on the smallest of details, will have a better eye for how your improving while being able to give you feedback on things you should try out; should you feel comfortable enough.
