Imperial Fists Heresy era battles

Hello all, it certainly has been awhile since I have been around these boards. I thought I might share with you a battle that I participated in recently with my Imperial Fists. If this is in the wrong area I do apologize.

I recently got a call from a friend to take part in a mini campaign set during the Heresy Era for 30k. The twist on this is that this takes place in an alternative timeline that he has been playing with his gaming group and as such the legions have different alliances. Full details of that wide scoping conflict can indeed be found here.

So my friend was playing Imperial Fists, and wanted some games against my Imperial Fists. My Heresy Era Fists have always been Sigismund centric, whereas his would be based around the leadership and philosophies of Alexis Polux. Essentially for this alternative campaign, my forces have been stubbornly Loyalist, whereas Polux wants to join the Secessionists. Sigismund being the exemplar of rational thought, will suffer no contest or shism in the ranks and plans to hunt down Alexis Polux and the Imperial Fists that have joined his cause.

A rather interesting take, and a sort of civil war to essentially purge the ranks and reinstate the mission and philosophies of the legion. Should be interesting!

So here is game 1 of the mini campaign. I take Sigismund's forces and my friend will take Polux's forces for the duration of this campaign.

Here are the forces I took for this game. It was a 1000pt game.

Loyalist Astartes of VII Legion - Sigismund's Command (1000pts)

Legion Tactical Squad (I)

Legion Tactical Squad (II)
Powersword
--> Rhino
--> Extra Armour

Legion Veteran Squad (I)
(sniper special rule)

Legion Veteran Squad (II)
Heavy Bolter, Meltagun

Game
Sigismund, enraged at the thought of a schism in the ranks, sought out the ring leaders of Alexis Polux. Having tracked one such leader down he vowed to provide the Emperor's Justice to him personally.

This game was a Witch Hunt in the 7th Edition 40k rulebook. Sigismund was also gunning for blood and as per his special rules, would gain additional Victory points if he personally removed the enemy Warlord in a challenge.

Deployment of the Secessionist Imperial Fist's. Contemptors anchoring the line, while the Veteran Tacticals rank up to engage the foe.

The Rhino's hold the Tactical Squads, Sigismund is in the Land Raider Proteus "Dauntless" and the Devastators are in the ruins to the left.

 The battle is set!

 Secessionist Turn 1

The Scions of Polux moved forward ready to teach Sigismund and the loyalists their folly. Shooting at this stage was ineffective.

 Loyalist Turn 1

The Land Raider Proteus "Dauntless" lines up the left contemptor in its sights and lets rip removing 2 hull points and Immobilising it. The Devastators, with the still target in their sights glanced the injured contemptor and it falls down in a heap of burning wreckage. The Rhino's with the Tactical squads drive to the left of the field with their cargo intact.

Secessionist Turn 2

The scions of Polux move up, unfazed by the destruction wrought on them. They take some pot shots at the Devastators but are still out of range for the most part.

 Loyalist Turn 2

The Land Raider "Dauntless" lines up the other contemptor with intentions of doing the same, but the ruins obstruct its view and does no damage to the contemptor. The Devastators seeing this, decide to rain Krak missiles on the Veteran Squad II and manage to slay 3 marines. The Rhino's continue their out flanking manoeuvrings down the left flank.

Secessionist Turn 3

Having moved up in range, the Veteran Marines open up on the Devastators and cause 3 casualties. The rest of the forces continue to move closer, with the contemptor continuing its flanking down the right of the field.

Loyalist Turn 3

The Rhino's move closer to the veteran marines completing their circuit. The Land Raider "Dauntless" and Devastators continue to fire on Veteran Tactical Squad II, leaving only 4 marines left to protect their Warlord.

Secessionist Turn 4

Having seeing a tasty target in the form of a Rhino with a Tactical squad inside, veteran squad II with the Praetor in tow shamble towards it and promptly fail the charge distance. Veteran squad I follow behind to lend some cover fire.

Loyalist Turn 4

Sigismund orders boots to the ground and all the Tactical marines from squads I and II disembark and unleash hell on the closest enemy squad with the Warlord in it. At the end of that withering of fire, still the Vet Sgt and Warlord survive. Sigismund finally decides that now he is needed to sway the odds, and leaves the mighty protection of the Land Raider "Dauntless" and falls into Tactical squad I. The Land Raider "Dauntless" takes some shot at the blue veteran tactical squad but to no effect.

The results at the end of that salvo. Could have been better, and certainly could have been worse.

 Secessionist Turn 5

This is where the blood gets shed. Veteran tactical squad II with the Warlord decide to advance and properly engage my tactical squad II in front of them. The second squad move up to unleash a lot of sniping rapid fire bolters into my Tactical squad I. The resulting fire results in 70% casualties. Fortunately however, they do not break and Sigismund is filled with faith and vengeance.

In the resulting assault phase, the Warlord, perhaps due to his conscience, only succeeds in filling 2 loyalist marines out of his 7 attacks with the Solarite Power Glove. The sgts face off against each other, however the Tactical Sgt with the power sword delivers the telling blow before the enemy Vet Sgt can strike. No clear winner meant that the combat was sure to continue next turn.

 Loyalist Turn 5

The tactical marines pile in around the Warlord with combat knives at the ready, which unfortunately blocked Sigismund's view of his target. Knowing he must have blood he ordered his tactical squad up to assault the veteran sniper squad. The Rhino's move into the enemies deployment area ready to break their lines.

This is the result of the overwatch fire into Sigismund's assault. Due to Warlord traits he gets to reroll 1's, and after rolling six 1's for overwatch, rerolls them again to get the exact same number of 1's. Yeah, it was that impressive.

Sigismund crashes into the unit, issuing a challenge to any that would be brave enough to accept. The vet sgt got shoved forward and then hacked apart along with 4 others by the Black Sword. The veterans kill the remaining tactical marines but decide to leg it in the face of Sigismund. Sigismund cuts them down where they stand and consolidates towards his target.

The second assault doesn't go too well for the Loyalists, they manage to do another wound to the Warlord, bringing him down to 1 wound, but he does significant damage back to the unit and they leg it away and manage to outpace the Warlord.

Secessionist Turn 6

Being face to face with Sigismund on 1 wound is not the bets of places to be. Trying to put as much distance and obstacles between him and a vengeful Sigismund, the enemy Warlord crashes through the building assaulting through the other side and striking the Loyalist Rhino on the other side. He immoblizes it but it survives. The contemptor fires at the fleeing Tactical Squad II and kills 2, leaving only the Vet Sgt left.

 Loyalist Turn 6

Sigismund stalks his pray and launches after him.

Tactical Sgt fails to rally and falls back to Loyalist lines. Sigismund gets ready to assault his target, and everything lines up to help take out the enemy Warlord. Ultimately Sigismund is cheated from his prize by the combi-bolter on Rhino I, who delivers the telling blow to the Warlord.

Although Sigismund wasn't able to kill the enemy Warlord in honourable close combat, the end result was;

Loyalist: 9 vp's
Secessionist: 3 vp's

A very fun game to be had, and nice to crack out my Imperial Fists for a game set in this era. Our next game is going to up the ante with 1500pts a side. It was great fun to step away from Fantasy and paint up some Fists. I've currently got some more on the table to do, and would certainly appreciate any advice for going forward.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers!

Very cool! Thanks for the report. Was an enjoyable read.

A couple of questions:

Did you consider Taking a Templar Squad as troops with Sigismund in an Assault Vehicle? If you weren't going for balls to the wall efficient or Story > Comp then I totaly understand if you didn't want to run this.

How was Sigismund Performance overall? Did his points cost hinder your list making or was he totally worth it on the field?

How Effective was the 5 man ML Squad with Guaranteed Tank Hunter due to Legion Rules? Did you consider a Tac Vet Squad with Suspensor Heavy Bolter and Sniper / Tank Hunter?

Not having a great deal of experience in this (since I've mainly played Fantasy for the last few years) I didn't really consider the Templar Squad, especially as I didn't have anything I could appropriately use. Generally my list was Sigismund and models that I had painted. That was my selection criteria.

Sigismund I think performed well. Did he make his points back? Probably not, but he did wipe a squad out and ensure that my opponent stayed at arms length till I was happy to get close. Plus it was characterful to take him in this game (and future ones) as I imagine Sigismund leads by example and ensures that his own battle prowess wins the day.

As for the last point of the devastators, I didn't realise they got tank Hunters. I thought that was only a 40k for Fists. They did alright I guess in killing the Contemptor and some veteran marines. I'm actually in the process atm of painting up some ablative wounds for them as well as another Lascannon Devastator squad for my next game. I haven't considered your option of the sniper vet tactical squad, but after seeing how much of a headache it was to face, perhaps that might be an option. Thanks for the idea.

At the moment for the next game (1500pts), I'm thinking of taking another Proteus Land Raider and another squad of Devastators armed with Lascannons. Any thoughts of anything better?

Hmm, since you run with Mechanized Tactical Squads, you can't add apothecaries; but its something to consider when you tac squads number 15+

The only downside to 30k Heavy Support Squads (devestators) is that they all have to take the Same Weapon. Only the Sarge has the option to swap gear out. For them I'd strongly consider getting an Augury Scanner if you think your opponent will be Deepstriking or Infiltrating; they're great deterrents / counters to both.

Beyond that, slap Sigismund into an Assault Vehicle (Land Raider Phobos) so he can charge the turn he gets out and maybe give him a Templar Squad. Since you're not familiar with them, they come stock with :

Artificer Armor

Power Swords

BP & Grenades

2 Attacks and the Champ has 2W and can take a plethora of gear. Which means that they aren't as hard to put together; hold off on buying the FW Templar Kit for now since as it currently stands, you'd be paying 11pounds per templar but, you'd have a TON of extra bitz.

175 for 5 Before upgrades though...

If you haven't give your Squads Vexillas since 30k Marines don't have ATSKNF. Nuncio-Vox are only worth it if you need to draw LoS for Artillery or have Deep Strikers.

So, as is, your 500 point Additions to your list are good enough. I'm really stoked to see the eventual Alexis Polux vs Sigismund Confrontation.

We also have a 30k Subforum for all things Heresy; including List Building Sub-subforum and Rules / Tactica subs as well.

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/forum/105-age-of-darkness/

Those are some very good ideas and suggestions. I may modify my list to include Vexillas in my squads as I am horrendous at leadership tests. I do like the look and the idea of the Templar Bretheren, and may have to make a unit of them.

Cheers for the link to the sub-forum as well. Will poke around and post my list there as well.

This is the second battle of the Imperial Fists civil war in this unique Heresy Era setting. You can find the first battle here and here. These games represent the conflicting ideologies of Sigismund and Alexus Polux. Sigismund fights for the Emperor and expects all Imperial Fists to do so, whereas Alexus Polux wants the Imperial Fists to cede from the Emperor and join the Successionists. These battles represent who the Imperial Fists will mainly fight for. Dorn, at this stage has made no move on his own Legion, or any indication who he supports, but he won't stay idle for long.

This game was 1500pts, and was an objective grab mission. We had 4 objectives on the board. and we had the usual secondary objectives. In addition, every Heavy support Choice wiped out was worth an extra victory point, which did make me chuckle a little considering I had 4 extra victory points to give up.

Here are the resplendent forces of Sigismund.

Game
So we had an objective grab game, where Heavy Support choices, if wiped out or fleeing, were worth an extra VP. As you can see from my list, I had 4 additional VP points I could give up. However these supplies were very important to capture, as they contained not only extra ammunition and powercells, but fuel. Sigismund needed to deny the traitor Fists these resources and capture them for himself, in order to maintain and keep his armour running.

Secessionist Forces deploy to capture supplies.

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb383/lachdan/DSCF3026_zpsb9d601a8.jpg

 Sigismund and his armour deployment.

The scene is set. I fail to sieze the initiative, so the Secessionist Forces get the first turn.

Secessionist Forces Turn 1

The Contemptor Talon crashes through the building in front of them, heading towards the Loyalist forces. The one on the far right however gets caught in falling masonry and is immobilized. The Legion Dreadnought takes a shot at Rhino I, but hits a wall instead. The veterans move up, towards the Imperial lines, with the sniper squad (blue) taking possession of the ruined building and the objective.

Loyalist Turn 1

The Land Raiders move to line up shots on the approaching Contemptors, hoping to knock them out before their Multi-meltas can get into optimal range. Rhino II moves out of the way of the Lascannon Heavy Support squad, and attempts to give some cover to the Missile Launcher squad from the approaching veterans.

The hail of lascannons and missiles claim the middle Contemptor and some light damage is sustained by the leading contemptor. First blood is claimed by the loyalists!

Secessionist Forces Turn 2

The lead Contemptor continues its advance though the ruins and takes a shot at Rhino II. The Rhino suffers an immobilized result and suffers a hull point of damage. The Venteran squad II (yellow), move up trying to close the distance to the heavy support squads. The Master of Signal calls down a terrifying strike on the Lascannon squad in the open. His aim scattered little, and 3 marines were taken out by the strike. The Land Raider "Indomitable" shrugged off the effects of the blast.

Loyalist Turn 2

The Land Raiders again adjust their aim at the lead Contemptor and manage to take it down. The remaining heavy Weapon shots fire at the last immobilized Contemptor and manage to inflict heavy damage on its frame, but it fights on. The crew of Rhino II desperately try to restart the engine, but to no avail.

Secessionist Forces Turn 3

The traitor forces fire at the stranded Rhino II, and manage to wreck the noble vehicle. The Tactical squad II, disembark ready for orders.

Loyalist Turn 3

The lascannon heavy support squad embarks on the Land Raider "Indomitable", and it proceeds to move them to the objective on the left side of the table in the ruins. Sigismund, with the enemy Warlord identified, instructs the "Dauntless" to move towards them. Tactical squad II is ordered to meet up with Sigismund for the assault on the Warlord. The Heavy Weapons and Land Raiders fire shots at the veteran sniper squad hunkered on their objective, but the cover is too good, and only a couple fall.

So draws an end to part 1 of the battle. Will the Loyalists continue their lucky streak? Will Sigismund finally get to take down the enemy Warlord in honourable combat? Stay tuned and we shall see!

Thanks for looking.

Cheers!

Here is the second part of the Supply grab mission fought against the Traitor Fists. If you missed the first part, you can find it here. This game was 1500pts, and was an objective grab mission. We had 4 objectives on the board. and we had the usual secondary objectives. In addition, every Heavy support Choice wiped out was worth an extra victory point.

So here we go!

Secessionist Turn 4

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ndrvn3Wg964/VLtuQT2_n6I/AAAAAAAAB2Y/3mpDVLO1ohU/s1600/DSCF3036.JPG

The enemy Praetor sees the Land Raider "Dauntless" and decides to go for it, and orders his squad up to assault the vehicle. There is no other movement, and shooting is ineffective.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bFwW_BePQtE/VLtuVQfmqmI/AAAAAAAAB2o/NqesypwcRNI/s1600/DSCF3037.JPG

The enemy Warlord pounds against the hull, but ultimately the stallwart armour holds fast and no damage is sustained.

Loyalist Turn 4

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TaL_nEwtcHM/VLtuSw76ZXI/AAAAAAAAB2g/-XMFmBmCY80/s1600/DSCF3038.JPG

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_EOPW3Y0fq8/VLtua_8iqyI/AAAAAAAAB2w/T9u_sc9qDEk/s1600/DSCF3039.JPG

The Land Raider "Indomitable" deposits the lascannon squad on the left objective, and draws a bead on the veteran squad. The Rhino carrying Tactical squad I sneaks up towards the objective held by the Legion Dreadnought on the far left of the field. Sigismund disembarks and joins the Tactical squad II, and the Land Raider "Dauntless" gets ready to fire. Sigismund sees his target and declares to his troops that that one is his!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MZIqtYWF0IQ/VLtugJDwzhI/AAAAAAAAB24/Of2gWvtq0LU/s1600/DSCF3040.JPG

...and then the Land Raiders vaporize the Warlord. The veteran squad sustains a few causalities. Sigismund seethes at his missed chance of honourable combat.

Secessionist Turn 5

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YopEDWhMoSA/VLtuhsIGQiI/AAAAAAAAB3A/prpv6_2e5Uw/s1600/DSCF3041.JPG

The veteran squad wet their blades on the blood of the Missile Heavy Support squad. The Dreadnought takes a shot at the Rhino, but again hits the terrain.

Loyalist Turn 5

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ruO0m8uUTek/VLtulo-yJ0I/AAAAAAAAB3I/a5Pyyb47Gi8/s1600/DSCF3042.JPG

Sigismund launches into assault with the veteran squad and issues his challenge. The Sgt steps forward and is hacked down along with the rest of the unit, leaving the tactical squad to simply watch in awe. The land Raiders move up and take some shots at the Legion Dreadnought, and manage to do some light damage to it.

Final Turn 6

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-at0x7oQQG7c/VLtupoXxxNI/AAAAAAAAB3Q/l7NsRZEI7U4/s1600/DSCF3043.JPG

The Secessionist last turn is uneventful, with the Legion dreadnought Immobilized and stunned, its shot misses the mark. The Veteran Sniper squad is out of range of any targets, and simply secures their objective.

The Loyalists move towards the last sections of resistance. Sigismund and the Land Raider "Dauntless" claim the objective in the right field. Tactical squad I disembarks in front of the objective held by the Legion Dreadnought. Shooting is ineffective, with the Heavy Weapon shots unable to make a lasting mark on the last Legion Dreadnought.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ATGsHuBbYTs/VLturcEmrtI/AAAAAAAAB3Y/sgA0WlIA578/s1600/DSCF3044.JPG

However, left on 1 hullpoint left, Tactical squad I throws a krak grenade, that takes down the engine of war.

So that is game! The end results are:

Loyalist: 12

Secessionist: 4

A loyalist victory! Again, Sigismund wasn't able to get into combat with the enemy Warlord, and again due to my shooting. Hopefully Sigismund will get his mark in the next game. The next game will be 2000pts, so it should be interesting.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers!

Game 3 of out little side campaign set in the Heresy was played out recently. If you have no idea what is going on, here are some links to the other battles that have taken place.

The mission for this game was blissfully simple. Kill them all, and try not to get wiped out too bad in the process. Sigismund, having well and truly enough of this Heresy in the ranks, seeks to expunge and wipe out all enemy forces. No mercy. With his mission set, the tanks lined up ready for battle (I lost the roll for deployment), only to be fired upon by the Secessionist forces lying in wait! (My friend also stole the initiative).

Imperial forces all deployed together in an armoured gauntlet.

The Secessionist forces split their forces in two, with the Heavy Support squad, Veteran Squad I and the Master of Signals on the bottom left, with the rest of the forces deployed on the upper side of the table.

The scene is set!

Secessionist Turn 1

A devastating blast from the Legion Dreadnought commenced the attack of the traitors. The shot rang true and tactical Squads Rhino I was destroyed, even slaying 4 of the marines inside. The rest of the forces and contemptors moved forward, with a few running in order to close the gaps with the Imperial Forces. The Plasma Heavy Support squad fired upon the Loyalist Missile launchers in the old building, slaying the Sergeant. First blood to the Secessionists!

Loyalist Turn 1

With a deep rumble, the armoured might of Sigismund went forward. The Spartan "Victory", went as quick as it could towards the forces on the far left flank, determined to unleash Sigismund and his vengeance upon the forces there. The Land Raider's maneuvered to take aim at the approaching Contemptor's, and the remnants of Tactical Squad I embarked upon the Land Raider "Indomitable".

No shots rang out from the Spartan, as it was focused on speed. The Land Raiders and Missile launchers from the Heavy support Squad unleashed their fury on the approaching contemptor's, destroying one of them and causing some damage to another.

Secessionist Turn 2

Swarming over the fallen remains of the contemptor, the Secessionist Forces moved again with all haste toward the Imperial lines, eager to get to grips in short range fire fights.

The Master of Signal's, identifying the approaching Spartan as Sigismund's personal transport, leaves Veteran Squad I, and calls down a barrage onto the Heavy support unit in the building. Another 2 marines fall to the barrage and plasma cannon shots.

Loyalist Turn 2

The Land Raiders and Heavy support squad again unleash their payload against the approaching contemptors, destroying another one and critically damaging another.

The Spartan "Victory" unloads Sigismund, Akrida and the Terminators into the midst of the enemy positions. Sigismund sounds the charge and they crash into Veteran Squad I. All that could be reached were slain, though due to fearless, the two survivors fight on, and Sigismund and his squad close with the last members of the squad.

Secessionist Turn 3

The Master of Signals sees the carnage unleashed by Sigismund and his unit, and decides to relocate to other ground. The rest of their forces again move forward. The Legion Dreadnought successfully causes some damage to the Land Raider "Indomitable" though a glancing hit.

In the assault, Sigismund finishes off the last two members of Veteran Squad I, and the unit then consolidates towards the Spartan "Victory".

Loyalist Turn 3

Sigismund and the Terminators embark on the Spartan "Victory", leaving Akrida to deal with the last Plasma cannon marine. The Spartan then goes on the shoot the 'relocating' Master of Signals, killing him outright. The Land Raiders and the Heavy Support Squad fire again on the last contemptor and Legion Dreadnought, destroying both.

Akrida charges into assault and finishes off the last Plasma Cannon marine from the Heavy Support Squad.

Secessionist Turn 4
After the destruction of the last Contemptor and Legion Dreadnought, the rest of the forces make a run for the copse of trees towards the Imperial lines. A few Veteran marines from the lead squads take some accurate shots at the Loyalist Heavy Support squad, and do enough damage that they fail their morale and duck inside the building.

Loyalist Turn 4
The Spartan "Victory", rushes towards the last remnants and opens fire. The other Land Raiders move to draw beads on the approaching infantry. Tactical Squad II's Rhino moves in support of the Land Raider "Dauntless". The shots cause some casualties.
Secessionist Turn 5
Most of the forces of the Secessionists make it into the cover of the copse of woods, though with no available targets, they just bunker down.

Loyalist Turn 5
The Spartan and the Land Raider's move right up to the last of the forces, determined to reduce their numbers before the final assault commences. The Heavy Support squad in the building continue to flee towards safety, and Tactical Squad II's Rhino provides cover for the last members of the Heavy Support Squad.

The firepower of the Spartan and Land Raider's takes its toll.

Secessionist Turn 6
The enemy Praetor tries for a last ditch attack on the Spartan "Victory", however the undergrowth of the wood slows him and his last member of Veteran Squad III. They instead consolidate their position along with the Librarian and his last remnants into a last stand.

 Loyalist Turn 6
The Land Raider's and Spartan move up to finish them last forces. The Heavy Support Squad rallies and takes cover behind the old watch tower.
All the shooting was directed at the Veteran Squad II (blue squad), and manages to finish them off. The Librarian finally breaks and flees from the slaughter. Sigismund and the Huscarl's charge out of the Spartan "Victory" and get ready to assault the enemy Warlord and his last faithful marine. However the copse of trees again foils the efforts of those seeking to stride under its bough's and the assault falls short.

 End Game
That is the end game! A much bigger battle this one, though I was very pleased that all my forces (and that of my friend were all fully painted). So the end result was:

Loyalist: 10
Secessionist: 2

Victory to the Loyalists! I think that having Sigismund in an assault vehicle meant that he got into the think of it very quickly (Turn 2), and he would have made it again into the combat on Turn 6 if I rolled average on the charge roll. Ahh well, never to mind. The next game is planned to be 2500pts, which is going to be a monster of a game. I'm thinking for the next 500pts of adding another Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield squad (6 of them) and a Primus Medicae in Terminator Armour.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers!

A valid point. I guess my thinking was that the Huscarls, of which I only have 5 painted, wouldn't be easy to add, and I can put them in one of the other Land Raiders for a counter assault unit/alternative attack unit. With the new unit of Terminators (of which I have only 5 painted, but another 5 primed and ready to paint), they will be 6 strong, plus Sigismund, Primaris Medicae and Chaplain Akrida, I just thought that might be enough bodies, as too many might be unwieldy.

Well, those are just my initial thoughts anyway. I am certainly up for any alternatives or ideas. Would it be better to have a big unit of Terminators rather than two units (5 and 6 respectfully)?

I've found with terminators if running in something like a spartan more is better in the war of attrition that is sure to follow after they get into combat.

Your opponent will throw everything at your big scary deathstar. Even if it is feeding them chaff units eventually you will get whittled down so staying power is very important.

That's a very good point. I might revisit my list and see what changes I can make to it. Would you say a single unit of 10? Or would that be over kill?

In the era of Legions numbering the Hundreds of thousands, there is no such thing as overkill! :p

A unit of 10 + 10 SS + Primus Medicae will rival all but Firedrakes (because they have 2W..) in terms of Staying power.

I'm not sure if I should be that cruel (from the guy that took a Spartan with Flash Shield and Ceremite armour in a 2000pt game). Does sound tempting though.

This is game 4 of our dissent and of course the future of the allegiance of the Imperial Fists Legion. This game was 2500pts, so was a very large game. As a consequence of that, this game did only go for 4 turns, due to time considerations. Still we managed to get all our full turns.

The Mission

For this game, we decided to do the mission cards thing again. It was good fun last time, and its great to have a fluid and dynamic set of objectives to obtain during the game. Plus I was looking forward to actually having some decent cards for this match.

Essentially Sigismund is forcing the Secessionists back, well into their territory. This game had big stakes, as the winner essentially had the sole ear of Rogal Dorn, and could take him in the next game. Sigismund was ready to dish out some justice and silence and heresy that would threaten his Primarch. Glory was just a bonus.

With the forces set and me having failed to steal the initiative. The secessionists move forward.

 Secessionist Turn 1

The Secessionist move forward, ready to take the fight to the Loyalists. They move up towards the objectives in middle field.

Some shots are fired, but they only succeed in causing some light damage to Tactical Squad I's Rhino. The fearless Veteran tactical squad runs to secure the objective on the right flank.

Loyalist Turn 1

The loyalists take stock of the situation and attempt to knock out some of the incoming threats. The Land Raider 'Indomitable', unloads the devastator squad onto the objective, where they take a very quick aim at the incoming contemptor's. The rest of the Land Raiders and the Spartan, lock sights on the contemptors, inflicting 2 hull points at the end. No other shooting takes place.

Secessionist Turn 2

The Sececcionist still surge forward, claiming more objectives and scoring well on their objectives. More shooting takes place, and the Devastator squad is wiped out. First blood to the Secessionists! The contemptor's attempt to charge the Spartan, but they all fail to make the distance.

Loyalist Turn 2

Seeing the approaching threat, and hungry for blood, Sigismund and his squad disembark and assault into 2 of the enemy contemptors. The Spartan and the Land Raiders line up and take out the 3rd Contemptor.

Seeing the approaching Veteran marines, the Huscarls decide to go out and protect the objective.

The squad fly into combat and manage to batter one contemptor down, and would the other. They don't destroy it, so thy are locked into combat.

Secessionist Turn 3

Most of the Secessionists move closer to Imperial lines, scrambling for some objectives. In a surprise assault, the Veteran marines assault and destroy tactical Squad's II Rhino. They disembark, ready for revenge. Sigismund as his squad manage to destroy the last contemptor.

Loyalist Turn 3

Sigismund and his squad line up to take out the Sniper Veteran Squad (blue). The land Raiders and Spartan line up to take out the Veteran Squad with the Warlord in it. tactical Squad I also moves into position to take some shots at the enemy warlord's squad. Shooting wise, the Spartan managed to kill enough marines to get some shots on the enemy Warlord and slay him. The Land Raiders both open up on the approaching Terminators and manage to kill 2.

The Terminator Huscarls and Tactical Squad II assault the Veteran squad on the right flank. I roll terrible, and lose the combat. The Terminators stays in the fight, though the Tactical Squad falls back (safely). What I thought was a sure thing, turned out to be very close to a total disaster. Its now up to the terminators to hang in there.

Sigismund and his squad assault into the Veteran marines and wipe them out to a man. He falls back in the face of Sigismund, and Sigismund consolidates to hold the objective.

Secessionist Turn 4

The Terminator's surge forward towards the stricken Rhino. The Veteran Marines (yellow) on the left flank moves towards the objective right near the Spartan. The Terminators assault the Rhino and unsurprisingly remove its last hull point. It explodes killing a few more of my tactical marines.

Combat between the Terminator Huscarls and the veterans in the right flank finally go my way, with the Terminator's wiping them out. They then consolidate towards the enemy Terminators.

Loyalist Turn 4

Time was called for this turn, so this was my last turn to get some points. I was at this stage 2 points down, so needed to earn 3 for a win. The Huscarls move towards the objective in the middle of the field, just making it into range to capture it. The Land Raiders and Spartan and Tactical Squad I manage to wipe out the last 2 Veteran Marines, netting another point.

Sigismund and his squad assault the lone veteran marine (blue) and mange to kill him which also was the final point needed.  So the final scores are: Loyalists: 7 Secessionists: 6   A very close win for the Loyalists! I felt I had some sub par luck this game, but still, a little luck swung my way in the end to get those final points. The the whole game I was trailing in victory points, so I thought it was going to be difficult to equalize without some decent mission objectives to get bumped up.    So with the conclusion of this game, Sigismund ensures victory for the Imperial Fists. Dorn will now come into the next game on the side of the Imperialists, ready to dispense some of his own justice. The next game should be interesting, as it will be 1000pts, with me getting a 'free' Dorn, and my friend getting a 'free' squad of Traitor Ultramarines, that need to escape from a complex. We will be using the Space Hulk tiles to recreate the complex, and as such there will be no vehicles. So it should be interesting for me, as I do like my tanks!

Anyways, thanks for looking!   Cheers!
