CoffeeGrunt
Well, the parts finally arrived from Victoria Miniatures, so time to get this Kill Team started! This force is going to be very different from my 4th Tarosian Regiment, so I figured it could use a separate thread. The Hades Hive Hyenas - name is as WIP as the force - are a motley band of thugs, thieves and murderers assembled from the dregs of society that collect in the prison planets of the Imperium Pushed into service during the Second War for Armageddon, they were ideal for defending the underhives of Hades Hive from Ork infiltration, at the small cost of pilfering anything that wasn't nailed down, until they found a crowbar to come back for it, at least. Thanks to RADU LYKAN for the inspiration for their look, by the way. I'm going to use Empire Archers for the Veterans, so they have cool dusters and are carrying a tonne of pilfered loot to note their veterancy and better equipment. They'll have outdated equipment, be packing solid projectile weaponry almost exclusively, and won't have access to anything fancy like Carapace Armour or Lascannons. Here's a rough idea of how I want them to look: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150109_00_40_28_Pro.jpg#http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150109_00_39_58_Pro.jpg Going to have the standard Guardsmen in the Victoria Minis Penal Guard look, as it suits an under-equipped Conscript or Guardsman given leave of a prison planet and equipped with the bare minimum to fight. They have to scavenge, jerry-rig and improvise weaponry to survive and succeed. Those better at 'acquiring' useful items are better placed to survive combat duty. Also thinking of using Kromlech's Heavy Weapons platforms as they'll solely be using Heavy Bolters and Autocannons anyway. Let me know what you think of the Vet above. Looking forward to making these guys up! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301753-hades-hive-hyenas-savlar-chem-dogs-kill-team/ Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Yes a new topic is right - different project after all! You're already got a good name for them, and the model looks great! Excellent mishmash of bits, they're going to be a characterful little force with this sort of effort going in :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301753-hades-hive-hyenas-savlar-chem-dogs-kill-team/#findComment-3914874 Share on other sites
scatmandoo
I like the look of them and look forward to seeing your interpretation of how they should loook. irwit
They look great, Im thinking these would be cool for conscipts too. Any chance of seeing the figure on a base next to some other models to see head and weapon scales? CyderPirate
Looks good man! I've done a similar thing with mine, adding bits from a couple of Empire kits to make my DKoK engineers look a bit more dangerous. http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u449/CyderPirate/Imperial%20Guard/DSC02221_zps847bc500.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301753-hades-hive-hyenas-savlar-chem-dogs-kill-team/#findComment-3914925 Share on other sites
CoffeeGrunt
Thanks guys. I want each model to look fairly individual, I imagine Chem Dogs wouldn't be the type for forming up into Platoons together! I'll probably do slight variations of colour on the dusters, different levels of repair on the weapons, and different loot for each one to individualise them. Quite excited to get started with these. I found the box sitting in the kitchen when I got back from a game with a friend at the local store at around 11:30PM. Was up until 12:30AM as I simply had to see how they'd look! Itching to get out of work and get hands-on with them at home! WarriorFish
Yeah, a real opportunity to go mad with customisation and variations on the colour scheme :D You could even give them each a name and a short back story :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301753-hades-hive-hyenas-savlar-chem-dogs-kill-team/#findComment-3914983 Share on other sites
Malus Trux
Fantastic start. I like the multitude of weapons on him. I take it this is one of the better off guys. CoffeeGrunt
Thanks guys! I've been building these individually rather than batching them in stages as I would normally with Infantry, which is quite fun for making each feel unique. I've got a small fire team of five with a Grenade Launcher built, and the Force Commander/Gang Leader. It'll be a while before they get painted, given weather, Big Guns and other distractions, but it's a project I'm very excited to put work into! It's a real building project, as I've had to cut, kitbash and jerry-rig together bitz for them in some instances to get the right look and equipment. I've started diversifying their bitz, as I found those Masks from the Cadian Command box, and a few Scion heads with decent Respirators. I can imagine them scavenging these and retooling them to dispense drugs, rather than using their standard-issue clunky, bulky respirators. I think I might make it a mark of Veterans vs Guardsmen to have some withe the backpack gasmask as just Guardsmen, and some with more sophisticated respirators as older, better equipped Veterans. Let me know what you think of them, by the way: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150110_00_25_21_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150110_00_25_49_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150110_00_26_44_Pro.jpg Bases and a few extra bitz are on their way, but surprisingly only one of them refuses to stand, the others are fairly stable. I should potentially get up to 15 done with the parts I currently have, but we'll see. walter h
They are awesome. The mix is inspiring, I noticed the Kroot, part the ,Empire archers really stand out. I know the variations in color will make them appear more hardcore. CoffeeGrunt
Bases and extra bitz are arriving from my friend at Bitzbox on Tuesday, so I'll be able to model the bases and then have them fully, properly assembled for spraying. After that, it's a case of waiting on weather. I've used a mix of Lizardmen parts, though only one or two, Kroot parts, Scions, Guard and Empire for these, plus the third party bitz from Kromlech's Priest and Victoria Miniatures. The variety of suppliers really helps! Hoping to have as many as I can built by the end of the week. CoffeeGrunt
Well, managed to get 15 Hyenas built up this weekend from the parts ordered from Victoria, and splicing in a few from my bitz box. I've decided that Veterans will be wearing red coats and wearing the non-Victoria gas masks, (Scion helmets, Cadian respirators, that sort of thing.) Also got an alternate Leader/potential Sergeant built up. I like to think of him as a proper military man "promoted" to leading the Hyenas in battle after annoying the wrong superior officer: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150111_18_14_02_Pro.jpg Sorry for the black basecoat, I find it makes models look terrible in photos. I'll be uploading pics of the 2 Guardsmen squads with Grenade Launcher squads as I paint them, for now here's the Redcoat Veterans - name WIP - partway through the base layer stage. These Empire Archers would make a great base for Praetorians, actually... http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150111_23_00_47_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150111_23_04_43_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20150111_23_01_45_Pro.jpg I'm liking the funky scrap energy weapon. Would function as either a Plasma or Meltagun in game, as it looks ambiguous towards either, IMO. I also may have been subconsciously inspired by Irwit's Inquisitorial Death Korps, looking back at these. Great minds? What's people's thoughts on these Empire Archer bodies being a suitable proportion for women? I was thinking it'd be handy to get some female heads and arms next time I'm ordering from Victoria, to mix up the squads a bit and add more variety and character to the mix. CoffeeGrunt
Thanks guys! I would like to recommend Victoria Minis, great quality parts, were here within a week from across the planet over New Year's, and are decently priced against other suppliers. I'll be buying from them in the future, I assure you! :) As far as this growing into an army...maybe. That's how it always goes, isn't it? It'll depend on whether I managed to get Kill Team going in the local store. If I do, I'm much more likely to start collecting small, themed forces of various factions. Lets me be more creative without drudgery like painting 70 Lasgun Guardsmen to cover Conscripts, or that sort of thing. As for the fruits of my labour, I'd like to call this fire team pretty much done! I quite like using washes and drybrushes to make them feel well-worn. The slightly rusted equipment, dirty, oily and scorched Autoguns, and the dusty...dusters. Will probably do my Shotgun Leader next to focus on him, before bringing it around to the standard Guardsmen with Grenade Launchers. May have to take a break from these to get my Russ tank painted up, though! http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-130.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-129.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-131.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301753-hades-hive-hyenas-savlar-chem-dogs-kill-team/#findComment-3918679 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
The palette really comes across now, great work and speedy too - the benefits of dry brushing and washes! What sort of basing are you aiming for? CoffeeGrunt
Yeah, I felt a muted palette would work best for these guys. They'd spend a lot of time skulking in the muck of Mankind, after all. As far as bases, I'm debating that atm. I'd like to do a snow base scheme, as a Hive City feel is a bit...dull. I may look into custom bases with urban debris detail to rebase them on. It;d suit the look much better. In the mean time, I'm debating buying one of these guys to run as a Bullgryn with Power Maul in the Kill Team on occasion. He will be my Fluffy and I will love him and hug him and pet him and call him my Fluffy. Problem is that Bullgryns with Slab Shields are useless in single model form, as they don't get the special rule. But the Brute Shield and Power Maul combo makes them exorbitant, especially for Kill Team. Ogryns' 5+ Save makes them a bit too vulnerable as well, even if they are much cheaper. Also works well with the borderline heretical feel I wanna go for, (Astartes and Scion trophies signify these guys haven't been in the Imperium's graces for a while.) A nice, hulking Beastman to pound people down sounds like fun. Vash
These screams inquisitorial henchmen in my eyes. And I really love it. The feel is really suited for the grim future of 40k universe. RADU LYKAN
Thanks for using my guys for inspiration, love how you have taken what I did and made it your own, I love the adhoc nature you have built into them, when making my guys I wasn't shooting for chem dogs but something different so actively tried to bring them into a cohesive looking force using the same equipment across the board with the same paint scheme for everyone. Your use of multiple different kits from model to model really works, now the question is what are you doing for tanks? CoffeeGrunt
Thanks guys, will be setting these aside to get my Big Gunz Russ painted up, but I'll be picking them back up soon. I just got a few bitz for Heavy Weapons Teams from Bitzbox, and a couple of extra bitz for more variety, (I'm now digging into the Catachan bitz for even more variety.) I also managed to magnetise the tripod mounts of the HWTs so they can take a Heavy Bolter or Autocannon as-needed. As far as these guys, they're primarily a Kill Team, so there won't be very much armoured support at all. I'm planning an Autocannon Sentinel, and a converted Hellhound as a Chimera, but they won't get bigger armour unless I grow them into a full army, (which would be both pricey and a hefty headache to do each model individually!) CoffeeGrunt
On that note, here's the first Heavy Weapons Team. I'll likely use two with either Autocannon or Heavy Bolter. Everything is magnetised so the weapons can be swapped out, and the crew can be swapped onto 25mm bases to serve as Veterans. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-132.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-133.jpg Just need to add a little extra detail to each one, and they're set. I'm about out of parts for now, so I'll be focusing on painting these guys in the meantime before ordering more. Saves money that way!
