Epilouge
Belial knew something was dreadfully wrong when he awoke in the medical wing of the Penitence, the Dark Angels Gladius class destroyer orbiting the Planet Umbral. Then his memories came flooding backback, the mountain stronghold, the Towering riptides, and the legions of Kroot. As he glanced around the his regen chamber in the large open medical bay. He took note of Brother Gideon the apothecary, his retinue of servitors, and at least a dozen servo skulls. The Void glass overhead was not directed at the planet but instead held a view of the planets dead moon Iago. He gingerly looked about shaking out the cobwebs of his mind and he tried to count the number of times he had awoken in one of these things...

The battle had gone terribly wrong. The teleport calibration had been off and the librarian Agrippus, had never arrived with the command squad, and a similar fate had befallen the squad of Sgt Nikolitian. What had come after was a massacre. There were simply too few members of the deathwing after sustaining such telling losses. The one survivor of the battle, Brother Nits, had grabbed Belial, the Standard of Fortitude and had been teleported back to the Penitence.
The Deathwing could be pleased at least that they had mortally wounded the Tau commanders and caused them to flee from the field. The Riptide leader called O'vessa he had personally run from the field, while the commander known as Farsight had been struck by a thunder hammer in close combat. Belial smiled inwardly at this.

The Coordinated assault had not been a complete failure though. After typing his encryption key, he read the debriefing from the telecom board within his biorepair chamber or "pod" as the battle brothers called them. The deathmarines had been successful in their assault on the Ork fortress. Belial prepared himself mentally as the corridor echoed with approaching footsteps. He knew what was coming. The servitor broke the stasis field that surrounded the biorepair chamber, and a battered Azreal entered the medical bay. It was going to be long day...

Well i took out the commanders but the victory proved a bridge to far. Losing almost 600 points without any return was a tough pill to swallow but fair play to the tau player. We were using planetstrike rules which allows a fire storm for the attacking team and fortifications for the defender. Planet strike rules allow deepstrikers to attack the turn they drop. My opponent set up the field, and used a void shield generator and sky shield represented by the elevated roads.
Rethinking the game it would have been better after collapsing the void shield i should have tried to eliminate the kroot to attempt to give belial a landing site on the the Skyshield and been less risky in my deepstrikes. I could have used a strategem to bring in the command squad on turn 2. Ah well...

I agree with the Frater: extremely one-sided deployment!

That being said, I would have gone another route...

Turn 1: drop Belial and his squad and use the big rocks to block LoS with the landing pad. That way he can't intercept and if you position well, he'll have trouble using his jump packs and the aditional movement after shooting (too tight a spot)...if he wants to keep the sheidl+interception he can't move

Turn 2: use Belial as a beacon, drop everybody else and mass bodies for a turn 3 assault.

Turn 3: Profit €€€

All that being said, thats for the post, it was fun reading it as always ;)

I was :eek when I saw the table, a void hield and. Big tau suits castled up and bad teleportations.Looked like a fool's errand and it really was, kudos too you for fighting tooth and nail so uphill battle.:tu:

Well it was a tough table but I might have been able to do it if I didn't fail so many charges on turn one. Had I been able to pull that one out it would have been beyond epic.

I really don't understand the table... Even for a campaign special outcome, it was clearly unplayable...

Here's the thing about planet strike, your playing two opposing sides, where one gets to invade the fortress of the other. This means that you essentially have the attacker who can bring all the nastiest stuff you can imagine, which in my case is a slew of deathwing knights with Belial dropping where ever they want and then charging. then you have a defender and his advantage is being able to set up the table with as many fortifications as you can think of and the table however you want. When we played the only thing I really took issue with was the fact that the table wasn't very pretty.

Glad you liked it man. Also I like your alternative take on how to achieve things tactically. I think it would have been good to try to drop Belial's and friends on T1 and then use a storage gem to drop the banner turn 2 with him as beacon.

 That Looked like Fun!!!

Cheers man. I was a little curious how the kroot dialect would go over, especially amongst the non English speakers out there, I kind of saw the accent as being a cross between Germanic and cockney.

It's been a while since I've seen the planetstrike rules but doesn't the defender set up their base in the centre of the table and you get heaps cool extra rules like d3 bombardments?

Other than that love the comic strip batrep. Different and refreshing smile.png

Yeah there was a lot missing rules-wise it seemed and also being extremely one-sided both list-wise and deployment, even for planetstrike. Important thing is that you had fun, but man I don't think I've ever seen such an unfair setup before tongue.png. It was basically Tau porn, the void shields and skyshield pad were cheese alone but I mean 4 riptides AND a farsight bomb? That dirty Tau player needs to take a bleach shower to get all that filth off! What did he pay you for agreeing to have that set up???

I expect the next battle to be a bolter banner gunline against nothing but kroot to make up for this one!

Thanks for another enjoyable action-packed write-up. thumbsup.gif The kroot reminded me of the jaegers from the Girl Genius comic so some of the Germanic accent must have come across.

That table looks totally unfun to me. A big open plain with all the important and interesting stuff packed into one corner? Urgh. I honestly thought that first photo of the tau army was taken before deployment!

In planet strike the defender can set up his table any way he chooses. The attacker gets to fire a firestorm blast which is str 9 ap 3 large blast with full scatter equal to d3 + number of fortifications taken. We used the new planet strike rules available through the black library. Both players can warlord table that is special for planet strike. You also get 4 points to use for purchasing strategies prior to the game, these include things like selecting reserves coming in on a certain turn, adding to the scatter of deep striking units, improving the firestorm munitions or rerolling to end the game on turn 5 or six, to name a few.

Well there was an interesting ending to this campaign and I will be sure to share all with you. He's a good friend of mine and he has decided to sell his tau, so that tells you something right there.

Hopefully you all will enjoy the next one a bit more... And thanks for the feedback on the kroot. I was kinda struggling with their voice, as there are no real kroot voices represented in the tau codex.

Took me a while to get to this as I was waiting for a chance to sit back and enjoy the read. As ever a fun read but that set up coupled with mishaps never gave you a chance. Keep up the good work and I'll be waiting for more
