Thanks Marcus... Sneak peek in a day or 2. Trying to do a black wolf, but it is not working out. Might leave it till I get home to the airbrush and move on to the white wolf instead

You know what, any hints or tips would be gladly appreciated....

Here is where I am stuck at.

Any ideas?

Stopped working on the black wolf to get the white wolf done to the same point. Allowing me to do bits common to both at the same time :)

Gave the black wolf an initial wash of drakenhof in the deepest recesses before a mix of oiled earth and black wash was done across the model.

Both in need of final highlights and on to details

What do you think so far?

So thats me done!! There are a good few mistakes still to fix.

Like I ran out of black for doing the eyes and I missed a little decoration on Freki as it blended quite well with the fur.

The highlights on both stand out more than the photos would suggest also.

All things I can fix when I get home. Along with attaching them properly to their bases

When I get home I can add the missing obelisk, T-son and arm that I forgot to pack also :D

Loving your work Dantay, using the Moritat body for a Vigilator is an awesome idea, I hope you don't mind if I potentially borrow it off you (my plan is to buy a load of the Character models and use them in my bitz box but that is wonderful)?
  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks Charlo & Hfran Morkai.

Hfran, steal away my friend :) My vigilator has actually been demoted to hunter leader  now.

My new idea, is to combine the Grey Slayer pack leader with Cypher and a pair of mark 3 legs, + similar style bolter and use that as a vigilator, Maybe have him hooded also.

Anyways, until I can set a budget with the missus, I am merrily ploughing along with some of my backlog.

Tried using my airbrush for the first time in about a year. Tried out the sparmax 4 and it is a lovely brush, but with bigger nozzle/ needle size, I am having to relearn what pressures to use etc...

This is the first batch after spray and a wash. The administratum grey went glossy for some reason and the wash wouldn't hold. Put a second coat on and now it is a bit darker than expected. I will do some highlights and see if it will even out. Am on the rig now, so no more airbrush for a few weeks.

Also been messing around with these 2, need a little more wolfing especially the librarian... But do not want to go full-wolf on them.

Any ideas??

Trying a new waay to do the grey

also blocked in ome colour to see how it will all match up

Do I run the gold from the eyes right around the helm?

Thoughts and critiques please?

It is an Iron Warrior helm from Forgeworld, I just cut the nose plate down a little. I use the 2 targetter heads for my Heavy supports or seeker squads. The skull like heads. I had considered wolf priests or death sworn, but worry they are too Iron Warrior-ish to make skull masks from without using GS which I am not very proficient at

I did the leather on my assault marines. Thought it would look good with some runes on it and break up all the grey :smile.:

Edited by Dantay VI

I had been chatting with Stray Idea over on fb, and he highlighted that the grey highlights seemed a bit flat, to which he was right.

I went back over the grey with dawnstone, then did a final edge with administratum grey. I think it has sharpened it up a bit.

Its a bit shaky, but it will do...  Also got the dawnstone highlights on another 4 of 19 models before the eyes packed in

Hope you like

Amazing conversions, Dantay! You said that you're not very proficient with gs, but have you considered trying to give spectacles to that IW helmet, if you're not convinced just with the paint? I reckon it should not be too difficult.

About the characters, I'm afraid I cannot offer much help, but I actually think the praevian is looking fine, with the right amount of wolf bits. Moreover, it is not unusual for marines with affinity to machines to be a bit distant to its legion, being influenced by the Mechanicum teachings.

Thank you both.

@Elzender Yes the plan is to try and sculpt the spectacles in place on the helms, but I have no access to materials just now. I am also kicking about the idea of doing te lower face plate with a chainmail shroud. Hopefully it will not stray too far into Death Guard territory

  • 1 month later...

Looking good. I like the Praevian and the Librarian is a brilliant sculpt for 30K. Not sure how I’d wolf them without going crazy. Maybe some of the Grey Slayer heads if you’re a fan? I know they’re pretty divisive amongst the Wolves players.

Congrats on the baby too! Hope you’re getting some sleep. ;)

Edited by Corswain

Lol, I am at work Corswain, and it means 3 weeks away from hom, so yes I am getting some sleep.

One of the few who go to work to get some rest :D

I might try some grey slayer heads. I am in 2 minds over them, as I am not sure if chaos marauder heads might be a better fit, we will see.

FPS on the Space Wolves sub-forum suggested the Priest dropping runes from his hand or something similar.. I may leave the Paevian as-is. He is more in-tune with his mechanical companions than his Fenrisian ones :)

This is where I am at for now, very slow going. Working through the metallics, still got more work to do on te steel, then come back in and do some tidy-up.

Tried steel on the face plates to match he gold, but it has a hard time standing out against he grey, so may switch it to bronze,

What do you think?

Thoughts

Thanks for looking!!

The faces are really well painted and the gold detailing on the face plates really invokes the Wolves as I see them in the period, you've captured the Sutton-Hoo vibe very well! I would agree that there's very little differentiation between the steel and grey, so trying another colour might be a good shout.

Baby Luke is having an op on Thursday for his hernia, which will be hard-going for him and my wife. She has to fast him before the op and I doubt a 3 month-old will understand what is happening... I do not get off the rig till Monday. Please note my company offered to let me go back for the op, but I discussed with my wife and she feels it will be more stressful having me at home rather than out of the way. She has her mother with her and my family around her.

This means ETL time would be at a premium, so likely just 1 or 2 small vows as most ime will be taken up with family and my own op.

Anyways, back on track tried something a little different:

Wanted to see how they would look with leather helmets. Was partly inspired by this and the Rohan from Lord of the Rings :D

Might redo the steel to make it pop more as vallejo black metal was maybe too dark a base.

Stick with full leather, go for half leather or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thoughts?

Thanks for looking :)

Thanks Pearson, tried some washes and a glaze to see how it would look.

Tried some washes. The colours didn't come out much but it is far more pronounced in real life

Bloodletter glaze, gives it a reddish, almost orange hue...
