  1. Tomorrow marks the end of my semester, which means building time! Altough i have some RL matters to attend to, i plan to get stuff done. With the launch of 8th edition upcoming week, i have a renewed surge of excitement, inspiration and eagerness to play 40k. My time is limited, so i normally don't go to the local club to play, as i find that in 7th edition i spend more time looking at the rules then actually killing stuff. But that is going to change. In addition, 30k is taking off in the local area (most likely due to the inbalance of 40k), and i want to join in on the narrative fun they have. So with all that in mind, i'm going to use this thread to set up my goals, keep track of them, and hopefully, add new goals as i complete them XD. Goals: 1) I have never really written fluff for units and or armies, but would like to attempt it with this army. 2) I want semi compatibility with 30k and 40k. (more on that later). 3) I'm going to use Primaris Space Wolves. So, with the goals in mind, i have some challenges. 1) Figuring out a way to represent models as accuratly as i possibly can, within my own set limits. What i mean here are pack markings, legion symbols vs great Company symbols, 40k wargear, etc. I have some freedom here, as i have enough bits to create 40k marines to fill in gaps, and space wolves aren't overly strict in markings. Especially 30k Wolves have almost no guidelines in what is on their armour to denote rank, role, etc. So this is going to be fun experimentating with. 2) Integrating Primaris Marines into my 40k army. This is going to be fun! And currently i have 2 ideas. option a: With the fall of cadia, 2 great company's got completely destroyed. Creating a new Great Company out of the ashes with 100% Primaris Marines is a decent way of filling the gap. Now there are some issues here. if GW decides to go a different direction with the Great Company's and Primaris, or go the same direction but with completely outlined markings and names, my Great Company no longer fits with the canon lore. not sure how sad i would be about that, but has to be considered. On the plus side, i get to create a new chapter icon, name, and Primaris Wolf Lord. I also think that fluff wise Bjorn is an excellent addition to this army, as it makes to me a lot of sense, to put the most experienced and knowledgable person with the inexperienced Primaris. Inexperienced as in: not versed in proper Vlka Fenryka lore and saga's. option b: Integrate the Primaris with an existing great Company. Currently i have not yet chosen a great company for my old marines yet. But considering how similar the legion icon of 30k is with the icon of Ragnar Blackmane, i'm considering that as a potential candidate. No Primaris Wolf Lord, but i get to make a Primaris Wolf Guard Battle Leader, and create my own Wolf Guard with mixed old and primaris marines. I know you can't do it on the tabletop, but that aint stopping me. So, that are my thoughts going into my last day of the semester. I will leave this for now with a test model i painted, and hope to get a completed unit or 2 by the end of the week http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Space%20Wolves/TestModel%201_zpsg0hnjxym.jpg
  2. Dear commanders, Putting together a 3000 point list for a narrative campaign weekend, emphasis on fluff and narrative rather than just smashing face. I haven't played in a tournament so waac has never been my mindset, however I haven't played in an organised campaign either so looking for guidance to create a characterful all comers list. Would still like it to be effective as the wolves should be and don't want to let the side down as it were. Essentially looking for an infantry army composed from the following available models: (i've including their modelling status as if i don't need them i can save time not building/painting them. Everything i do take needs to be painted by end of July) HQs Praetor in Tartaros, tooled for combat. Command Squad in Tartaros (4) Rune Caster in Cataphractii Speaker of the Dead (to be built) Elites 5 Terminators in Cataphractii (can be varagyr or legion termis) (could be increased to 10) Contemptor with Kheres and fist Contemptor with Volkite and fist (bought, yet to be built) Contemptor (plastic battle of Calth, yet to be built) Techmarine 2 Apothecaries Troops (at least 2 of these need to be grey slayers) 20 Grey Slayers Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Close combat weapon, Vexillia, Huscarl with power axe (could be tactical squad instead) 20 Grey Slayers Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Close combat weapon, Vexillia, Huscarl with power sword (could be tactical squad instead) 20 Grey Slayers to be built 20 Grey Slayers to be built 10 Assault Marines, 1 power axe, 1 power sword, sgt with power fist Heavy Support Spartan (could be dedicated for the termis) Sicarian Arcus (bought, yet to be built) Caestus Assault Ram (needs repainting) Lord of War Legion Glaive, needs painting Allies? 25 sisters of silence which could be built in any manner So firstly i am aware this wont all fit in. Don't really want to buy any new units, just the slayer upgrade packs for the remaining squads as would like at least 10 with shields. Other than that I have all the gear to make them. Could build Deathsworn if needed. It's a few months away but don't really want to add any more tanks as I dont have time to build them). The few games I have played so far I have basically been taken apart by leviathans so a plan to crack them would be handy. (Don't want to get one of my own just yet) Any advice regarding composition will be appreciated. Slayer loadouts? Anything too cheesy or non fluffy?
  3. Hey, I have a few lore and rules questions regarding the sons of Russ, and hoped to find answers here. Lore: 1) According to the 40k wiki, the Great Companies 6 and 10, are unknown, as in we don't know their numbers or jarls. But are they mentioned in the timeline as having taken part in certain campaigns? 2) Was the Fist of Russ used during the Heresy, or is that something developed later? (the fist of russ, as the tactic Ragnar Blackmane is known for: Full on drop pod assault). 3) What happened to the disciplinary officers after Russ came back to the legion? Rules: 1) in the entry for Leman Russ, it is stated that he has the special rule Howl of the Deathwolf, and that he can use it once per battle. However, Howl of the Deathwolf is a warlord trait. Does this mean HotDW is Russ' warlord trait, or does he gain HotDW as an actual special rule and can roll for a warlord trait in addition. 2) Command Squads are listed under the HQ section. Does this mean one taken counts as one of the HQ choices required per 1000 points? Thanks in advance :)
  4. As the title implies, this is a log to chronicle our progress as a mate and I navigate our way through the conflagration of the Horus Heresy. We're both on fairly limited budgets, and much more interested in constructing narratives (and highly individualized miniatures) - so rather than go with the conventional route of building up massive forces of dozens of Marines and thousands of points a side in order to take to the tabletop, we're doing something different. Inspired by the chronic success of Inq28 and Inquisimunda logs which have proliferated across the more .. artistically inclined boards and blogs over the last few years (and in particular this EXCELLENT B&C log by a chap running under the moniker 'EdT') ... we decided to give a small corner of the Heresy the 28mm narrative-skirmish-wargaming-everything-must-be-converted treatment. At the moment, I'm working my way through a small unit of Loyalist Iron Warriors equipped in slightly ramshackle patch-jobbed Mk.VI armour. The idea is that they're a bunch of hard-bitten Terran-dominated legion veterans who've gotten decidedly on the wrong side of Perturabo - and been sent off to earn themselves an inglorious and ignoble end somewhere out among the stars (thus explaining, in part, why they weren't with the Legion for events like the purging of Olympia or the Betrayal at Isstvan V). This quite nicely plays into why they're clad in Mk.VI - as some of the first runs of 'prototype' Mk.VI were in fact delivered to the Iron Warriors for field-testing and evaluation. Perturabo wanted the design scrapped in favour of another heavy assault armour, so seems to have basically set it up for failure where possible. This unit remaining equipped with it even by the period just prior to the outbreak of the Heresy would both represent an ongoing mark of his disfavour, and presumably ensure them quicker, messier deaths. And Tartaros legs were what I had to hand, so yee. Alongside this initial deployment (which currently numbers three Iron Warriors in various stages of completion), I'm also adding a small group of Vlka Fenryka - to act as the local equivalent of a 'watch pack' in the unlikely event our protagonists wind up feeling more philosophical affinity for their gene-sire than the Imperium. There will also be the usual assortment of less-augmented humans you'd customarily expect to see trailing behind a Crusade-era Astartes force, including an Imperial Army veteran turned Remembrancer who's taken it upon himself to chronicle these otherwise forgotten sons.
  5. Back in July 29th of 2008 I wrote my friend Dark Bjoern telling him about my fluff and his thoughts and or opinions on it. This is basic idea of my army, The War Wolves of Fenris. I hope you enjoy! comments and or questions are more than welcome. Prologue Imperial Records indicate that around 218. M31: The surviving Wolf Lords of the Space Wolves Legion gathered together and elected Bjorn the Fell-Handed as their leader, awarding him the title Great Wolf. Bjorn gathers together the chapter and announces the Great Hunt in an attempt to find their Primarch, the wolf king Leman Russ. Legend say that the Great Hunt ends in failure and sadness.. Act I: The Phantom Wolves Return Rune lord, Njal Stormcaller tells the tale of the phantom wolves. They are the wolf hounds of Morkai, warriors of the wolf king, Leman Russ. Forever roaming the galaxy, without a wolf lord. The war wolves are led by the last of the Varangi, his name is Uncas the warblade. Accompanied along side by five of Bjorn the Fell-Handed's wolf guard named Wulfric, Rothgar, Gunnar, Jotun, and Tyr. Along with a 100 Fenris warriors, who all swore an oath under their great wolf's banner. Their story is an epic tale known today as the wardancer saga. It was Uncas who helped gathered the remaining wolf lords, electing Bjorn the Fell-Handed as their new leader and giving Bjorn the title of "Great Wolf." Uncas along with the wolf priest, and rune priest became Bjorn's mentors and personal advisors. The wolf council was formed, and set forth the task of uniting the warriors of Fenris, and protecting the borders of the Fenris sector. It was a new age, a time when the entire Imperium of man seemed lost without an Emperor and a Wolf King. Uncas, eventually took on the role of wolf guard battle leader, fighting for the great wolf Bjorn the Fell-Handed. Many wars and campaigns were fought under the new great wolf, bringing honor to the sons of Russ and restoring glory to the Imperium of man. Uncas was but the youngest member of the Wolf King's war council. It was a brotherhood of hardened warriors, and amongst these axe brothers was a mighty warrior and close friend named Buleye of the thirteen great company. Leman of the Russ admired Uncas's rebellious ways, and called him a MaveriK. Uncas would fight along side Leman on many wars, earning his place amongst the mightiest of the Vlka Fenryka. Bjorn the Fell-Handed and Uncas became great friends, as the first great wolf took on the role as leader of the once legion. It was during this time, that Bjorn announced the first great hunt. In the early days of the newly formed chapter, wolf companies were much larger and varied in size. During the first great hunt, the great wolf decided to split his great company into two smaller warbands. In hopes to widening the search for their great primarch, Leman Russ. One warband was lead by the great wolf, while the other was lead by Uncas. The first great hunt ended in failure, although wars were fought and worlds were liberated, the hunt for the wolf king was unsuccessful. Witnesses report that, Uncas and his fleet was heading back home to Fenris, when all of a sudden the gates of Morkai swallowed the fleet whole into hell itself forever cementing their sacrifice in history, at the halls of Russ. Uncas and his warband disapperared and became legends. [uncas is described by many as an anti-hero amongst demi-gods. He is a great and cunning tactician, and a giant wrecking ball in the battle field. Uncas was known to be marked by Lokyar the great Lone Wolf of Fenrisian legend. But he was able to command and earn the respect of the warriors who fought under him. It was Uncas's stubborn refusal and dertermination that helped keep the remaining warband alive in the warp. Although they suffered terrible losses against traitor legions, and chaos warp beast. The warband manage to keep their numbers high and strong. Throughout the years, inside the warp Uncas became cruel and ruthless. It is said by his enemies that the phantom wolf was a sadistic and vindictive warrior of Russ. Uncas vowed to his warband to bring them back home to Fenris, and fight by their Great Wolf Bjorn the Fell-Handed.] Uncas and his warband fought along side various smaller warbands of the 13th company inside the Eye of Terror. It was during these encounters that Uncas and his warband grew to understand the difference of time within the warp, compared to time in real space. Rune priest Torvald, of the thirteenth company updated Uncas of the world outside the warp. Exchanging stories, and intellegence about the enemies they cross. Torvald even mentioned about a young wolf blade, who we all know today as all-slayer, Ragnar Blackmane. It was Torvald that helped Uncas and his warband return home by using his rune magic. The recent encounter with Ragnar was used by Torvald as an anchor and beacon home to real space, for Uncas and his warband to cross over. In appearance, these war wolves of Fenris bare colors from the great crusades. However during their time in the warp, the warband had adopted crimson colors along with their pre heresy colors of grey. Many Imperial scholars speculate that the crimson is a pagant meaning for war, blood, the loss of their pack mates, rage, or even hate. Unlike the 13th company, these war wovles eventually return home to Fenris. They fought along side with Ragnar's great company, aiding them in fighting on a planet during the last days of Abaddon's 13th black crusade. Uncas and the remaining warband grew a mutual respect towards Ragnar's great company. Ragnar and Uncas become new allies and great friends, and exchange stories about their aventures. Ragnar remembering Torvald in his younger days during his time with the Wolf Blades. The war wolves finally return to the Fenris sector and to the Fang, only to come back and find things very different. Wolf lord Ragnar Blackmane, walked Uncas through the Fang. "Nothings changed much, except allot of new faces" Uncas's thinks to himself. Wolf lord Ragnar Blackmane points out the various warriors from other great companies as they walk by. "Right there, is Dark Bjoern of Krom Dragongaze Great Company, Jonny Wolf , Marek Grimfang, Warhorse47, Decoy, WolfLordLars, stinkenheim, Beef, Lord Ragnarok, Max Dammit, DV8, Vash113, Bran Scalphunter, Grey Mage, Mikal Wolfheart... just to name the few" says Ragnar. [sorry if I forgot you!] Uncas is given a private moment with the now venerable Bjorn the Fell-Handed. An iron priest ask Uncas, "do you wish for me to wake him?" Uncas replies "no, I am but a ghost... let my lord sleep." Uncas felt hurt, and broods in silence with the hulking venerable. Remembering Bjorn as what he once was. From the young warrior, to becoming the great wolf and be considered as one of Uncas's closest friend. Uncas is flooded with emotions, as he is taken back to the burning of Prospero. Remembering as Uncas fought beside Bjorn and recollecting the bittersweet irony of Bjorn's words about dreadnoughts and becoming what he feared most. Uncas, is probably one of the very few people today who can understand the unspoken words that plague Bjorn today of being abandoned by his master, our lord the wolf king Leman Russ. Uncas sat beside the giant machine for all night until he was summoned by the current great wolf, Logan Grimnar. A huge feast was prepared to honor the return of the lost warband. At the great hall, the mighty warriors are celebrated as heroes and legends amongst the gathered wolf lords. Everyone in the warband is over joyed, but only amongst them keeps his composure.. Uncas. The celebrations would continue on until morning, until suddenly amongst the drunken words spoken amongst one another, their loyalty to great wolf Logan Grimnar was put to question. The oath the war wolves took was towards the trueclaw, Bjorn the Fell-Handed. Which came into conflict with the current great wolf Logan Grimnar. Logan realizes the importance of such warriors and has them swear their fealty. Logan's wolf guard: Swear your oath and fealty to our great wolf Logan Grimnar. Uncas: My oath and my loyalties are to our wolf king, Leman Russ and to my lord, Bjorn the Fell-Handed. I know of no other, that is his equal. Logan's wolf guard: Bjorn is no longer great wolf of the chapter Uncas: I have sworn my blade to Bjorn. He is my lord. Do you question his worth wolf guard? Logan's wolf guard: nay, he is our greatest warrior and our *interrupts the fool* Uncas: do you always speak for your lord? does he not have a tongue of his own? I cant respect someone I do not know, especially if he lets fools speak for him! Logan Grimnar: is that a challenge last of the Varangi? Uncas: No young pup, it is a statement! know the difference. Logan's wolf guard: you dare speak to our great wolf in such a manner? Uncas: I have, and I just did Uncas ever defiant looks at Logan and says, "I have sworn my blade to Bjorn.. he is my lord." Whispers amongst the wolf lords are made and Logan feels a insulted but keeps his composure. The wolf priest and rune priest gathered along with the wolf lords find themselves conflicted. Uncas and Logan decide to settle the matter in a friendly duel, it is a fenrisian way. The only way to earn respect is through fighting, if Logan wins Uncas and the war wolves swear their fealty under Logan. If Uncas wins, he and his war band remains as they are.. phantoms of the past. Uncas and Logan are evenly matched, Logan was a little stronger while Uncas was allot faster. Each warrior would counter each others attack as the two fought on as equals. The two giants fought on for a full day, and as both Logan and Uncas lay exhausted on the broken ground around them, Logan suddenly started to laugh. Logan has never felt so alive and found himself having fun. The entire Fang was in silence, as every warrior watched the two clash in as the epic event unfolded in front of their eyes. Uncas finally stands and looks down on Logan, saying "I grow tired of playing with this pup, this ends here.." Logan, the "old wolf" seeing the seriousness in Uncas's eyes, agrees and stands up. They continue to brawl, the fight becomes increases with intensity, and becomes more ferocious. Uncas was ruthless and cruel, he was sadistic in the manner of his fighting style. His thoughts were focused on Bjorn the Fell-Handed, and how this pup Logan considers himself a great wolf. This thought angered Uncas even more, provoking the beast inside. Logan managed to break one of Unca's ribs, while Uncas managed to blacken one of Logan's eyes. Both warriors were covered in blood. Legend say, it was then that the two giants became blood brothers. Uncas, grins and delivers a blow to an unsuspecting chin, finally dropping Logan. As Logan dropped, Uncas held onto Logan's arm breaking it in the process. Logan recovers to see Uncas and the war band leave the great hall. Along the way out, Uncas managed to grab the shocked wolf guard he had argued with earlier. Grabbing him by his beard, Uncas held him in an ancient muay thai clutch and unleashed several devastating knees to the face, breaking his nose and jaw in the process while Uncas said, "never speak out of turn, and know your place wolf guard. I am Varangi." Everyone who watched, were astonished and speechless. Another one of Logan's wolf guard speaks in a furious tone, "what shall we do with them great wolf?" all eyes were on upon Logan as he says... "they are not exiles, rogues nor outlaws. They are but phantoms that walk amongst us, they are free to stand and speak amongst the sons of Russ. Let them re-supply! they are warriors of Russ, but fight more like sons of morkai." Uncas with his back facing Logan still standing at the doors of the great hall speaks "when our lord wakes, or is summoned to battle we will be at his side. We are the war wolves of Fenris. Our duty and our oath is to fight along side our great wolf Bjorn the Fell-Handed. Any who question this shall die by my blade. The war wolves of Fenris are here to protect Fenris, its borders and the people of the Imperium. We will travel the galaxy and fight our enemies. Xenos and heretics beware, for we are the emperor's wolves, the sons of Russ." ---- The concept of my lost company had been in the works since the late 90's. I decided to hold back on my storyline until a horus heresy novel was done about the wolves. Prospero Burns came out, and I incorporated what Dan Abnett added to the Sixth Legion. So pretty much this is my lost company background fluff. The idea of my war band is similar to the 47 Ronin without a master. [QUICK BIO] The wife and I. Anyway, I got into Warhammer 40K through my older cousin. He introduced me to Rogue Trader and taught me how to paint miniatures. We did a few RPG adventures with his friends using the book, and my character was based out of a Space Wolf, and named him Uncas. I became more involved with Warhammer 40K once 2nd Edition came out. My army has been Space Wolves ever since! I took a break from war-gaming, and got back into playing/collecting around late 2007, early 2008. I'm currently repainting my army to the darker pre-heresy look. I've also been doing allot of conversion work on my army. I'm looking forward to having my army finally done. I'll get there eventually! A little bit about myself? I'm Filipino, moved to Canada when I was 8yrs old. I'm into art, comic books, manga/anime, paintball/woodsball, MMA, traveling, keeping fit, swimming, surfing, I'm into martial arts... I have several black belts in (Filipino Martial Arts, Kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, etc etc.) sorry I can't think of anything else right now... Anyway, at first she didn't believe how nerdy I was. So she once said talk nerdy to me; instead I showed her my Space Wolves the rest is what they call is history! or maybe it was my masters degree in Psychology that impressed her?! she was still in nursing during that time and six years later, I've manage to get her into reading 40K novels. We are both into allot of sports, paintball, and traveling. She's into certain video games, loves Anime and Manga as much as I do. Warhammer 40K wasn't so much of a stretch for her especially when Starcraft II and Dawn of War games came out. We bought an Alaskan malamute puppy last year and named him Kiba "Fang" in Japanese. It's all the geek in me can ever ask for! --EDIT-- Changed font size. Sorry for the lack of updates. Thank you for looking!
  6. Livestock die, kinsmen die, oneself dies the same, but glory never dies for one who gets it for oneself Hávamál – Fragment from unknown author M1 found in Scandia Hrafn “hlæja” Hangatyrson, Jarl of þungr vatn In the great crusade þungr vatn was attached to the 81th Rogue Trader Militant exploration/scouting/pathfinder flotilla. The forces consist of a pack of the VI Legion, a Mechanicum detachment, a small household of Knights and Solar Auxilia directly under Rouge Trader [insert name]. From terra the flotilla made its way east through the galactic core and then north out in the Ghoul stars where it was recalled for the Prospero campaign. I thought I would chip in with my project before Inferno hits us all This topic will mostly be for my Vlka Fenryka during the Heresy, but I do also have plans for some auxiliary units like Knights and Mechanicum. Warning: Due to family life I have a very limited time for the hobby so updates can be somewhat infrequent.
  7. Dear All, Long time lurker, first time poster looking to share my 30K wolves in the hope of motivation and guidance with list building as I have only played once in the last 10 years and the current rule set seems somewhat daunting! This will be my fourth Space Wolves army since I began playing 2nd edition 40K and the heresy era has got me interested again after starting and failing to complete large Tau and Ad Mech armies. Like many, i'm waiting for the next black book before committing to building too many of the units but have purchased the Calth and Prospero sets. Firstly 10 tacticals in MkIV, another 10 to be added as I understand numbers are the way to go with these guys and will look more impressive. Have the new transfer sheet but waiting till I've completed a few squads before doing the markings. Let it snow? Yes, i committed to snow basing the whole squad after this tester. My Calth comtemptor all wolfed up, a little more than I initially intended but I've have decided the majority of the troops will be less embellished. W.I.P of my Ulrik, will be a stand in Centurion Chaplain until I build an appropriate Praetor. Group shot including Terminators, Assault Squad, the beginning of MkIII tactical squad and my Sip Kaerls ready to fend off a boarding action. Closer look at the MkIVs and Dread after application of Valhallan Blizzard. Spent way too long on the bases to then cover up with snow but will know for future. So any critique will be great, things i need guidance on are: Whether to weather with chip effect on armour & dust type wash on legs or leave relatively clean. Which squad markings to apply and where. Dreads left kneepad is blank for this purpose. How to equip a Praetor? Whether to swap new Tartaros for more Cataphract armour or have squads of both. How to equip Sisters of Silence to best complement Wolves. How to arm Tacticals, think I want to take the extra close combat weapon for fluff, is it worth it? Best colour for the base rims torn between brown or back to black. Look forward to hearing from you, will hopefully get better pictures up soon once I master my phones camera! Quinn
  8. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img540/7443/MBdhcp.jpg Prelude: Blood ties. In the flames Fafnir found old memories, which until recently he remembered with fondness. Now they were like ashes in his mouth. His allowed his mind to cast itself back to Fenris. To a simpler time, before this internecine war broke out between brothers and once brothers. Fafnir Vol'kyr Out on the ice… by the fire rested Fafnir & Keldane. They were in the midst of a hunt, looking to take down a great white-maned wolf, which had been terrorising the people of Asaheim and had even dared to attack the Aett itself. Some said it was more than a wolf, others that it was a daemon of Hel taken of a feral aspect… One thing was for certain, it had to be taken down. Sounds like just the task for Keldane… One of his many trials, maybe this one might actually see his thread cut… thought Fafnir Fafnir started to flense some meat from the legbone of a grox that he had bloodily taken down earlier in the day. Keldane had asked why the need to kill the beast, but Fafnir so far hadn’t responded… Keldane was a bad star, an ill-omen. Nobody who waked the ice with him seemed to come back… As far as Fafnir was concerned the less he had to do with Keldane the better… Maybe this way his wyrd wouldn't infect Fafnir’s and they might make it through the hunt. Let Keldane think the wolves an ignorant bunch of mjod swilling, hog feasting heathens, he will see through that illusion soon enough… He hacked at the meat with one knife, he put strips of it on the end of the other and placed it over the fire… The flames sizzled and popped as the fat and blood fell away from the flesh and melted into the fire, adding a new aroma to the thick smoke. “Why are you looking into the firelight Fafnir? It will destroy your night vision you know” came Keldanes sibilant voice. Fafnir ignored him. Always questions he thought.. Why this? Why that? Why, why, why? Always followed by a statement of fact… He is like an oversized mewling child, what did I do wrong to be saddled with him? Thought Fafnir. As Keldane opened his mouth to ask another question, Fafnir raised his hand and gestured silence. In a low rumbling voice Fafnir spoke. “For the love of the AllFather, would you please stop with these incessant questions. Your ceaseless yapping is giving me a headache…Look at you in your midnight armour with your fancy lightning bolts and your fancy words. You think you are so much smarter than I, but I am interested to know. What you have learned from today on the ice?” As Fafnir glared at Keldane from across the fire, Keldane sneered back. “I have learned that you are a messy killer and a messier eater Fafnir of Fyth” replied Keldane “Look at your face, you should be named Bloodmane. Why have we stopped here, when we should be tracking this beast? Then we could At least go back to the Fang, get some real food and out of this biting cold?” “Hmmph, so not much has penetrated that hard Nostraman head of yours then?” muttered Fafnir “Maybe a story to pass the time?” Fafnir's shield “A Fenrisian saga from the venerated Fafnir, I can hardly wait” The flames crackled and after a moment or two Fafnir sighed & broke the uneasy silence. “One spring day, a fox was prowling through the woods, looking for prey. He comes across a squirrel looking for nuts on the forest floor” “What is it with Wolves and their stories of animals.. Don’t you have any women?” sniped Keldane with a malicious grin “Silence whelp” growled Fafnir as he cuffed Keldane across the side of the head. “Listen & you might just learn something" "The fox tried to catch the little squirrel, but it darted away and climbed up a tree branch and to safety. You should leave said the squirrel a wolf is coming… To which the fox replied. I am not afraid of the wolf little squirrel. You only have one plan to escape, and will not always succeed, but I am a fox. The most intelligent of animals and I have a thousand ways in which I can escape from the wolf” “I always did like foxes, such cunning little creatures” said Keldane, eyes gleaming in the firelight “Then you had better be fast, said the squirrel for here he comes…. The fox looked around and considered how best to escape the wolf, but it was too late, before he could make up his mind what to do, the wolf had caught him and made him his supper. When the wolf left, the squirrel climbed down from the tree and escaped” “Stupid fox” sneered Keldane “I thought you liked foxes” said Fafnir with a smirk “Maybe that will be your name, Blackfox. With your midnight armour. Besides you are much too small to be a true wolf” “Stupid story then” “But what does the story teach you?” “Besides that squirrels can outclimb wolves and foxes?” “Now you are being facetious” retorted Fafnir “Yes I know words which consist of more than 2 syllables, we aren’t all complete savages” Keldane gave Fafnir an incredulous look as he continued. “It teaches that sometimes 1 simple plan can be better than having a thousand elaborate plans, and often simplest is best” “Like you, you mean? Sniffing like a dog at the outpost and thrashing in the snow with that beast like a wild canine all smeared in blood. The stupidly easy to follow drunken tracks you left behind us.That wolf thing could easily……” Keldane's voice trailed off as comprehension dawned on him. “Easily what Keldane?" whispered Fafnir with a feral grin. “It could track us here”. “Exactly” replied Fafnir with a triumphant tone. “All that grubbing about at the outpost, I was checking its spoor, its fur the scents it left behind, its tracks. All things a good hunter should be able to do. Intelligence is the first thing you gather about your enemy before you strike” “And what did you find out?” Keldane asked despite himself “It is no ordinary beast and what we hunt here, you can never speak of outside of our great company, if we survive the night. It is a revenant. A ghost of what may come to pass. What we hunt is a wulfen, part man part beast and a lot more besides. I have learned that the wulfen is sick, it is weak and it is hungry. It must also have been truly desperate or suicidal to have directly attacked the Aett” “If it is sick and weak, why not go out and hunt it down?” Asked Keldane “Because it is still part man and I would see it die an honourable death, not like a trapped & cornered beast” spat Fafnir. "You forget that this wulfen was once like us and as such deserves our respect. The messy kill, makes it look like me and the animal are stricken, easy kills. He will smell the blood on the air and be attracted to it. So rather than chasing him over the ice for days on end, we lure him here and take him down. He can die with honour in battle” “Or we die screaming” deadpanned Keldane “Or there is that” “Why Fafnir, was that an attempt at a joke? You know of all the Wolves I think I might actually grow to like you” smiled Keldane in a tone whih was not completely insincere. “I bet you said that to all the others who went out on these quests and had their threads cut” said Fafnir trying not to smile despite himself. “No, just you… So let’s see if we can break this wyrd thing of yours and try to get us both back alive eh?” A hand rested on Fafnirs shoulder breaking his reverie. Starkadr “It is time to hunt Fafnir, Vykryl calls. Are you ready?” As Starkadr walked away to join the pack, Fafnir slowly rose from his haunches. He unclipped his cloak & white maned pelt from his armour and tossed them on the fire. Starkadrs shield design..... “Our friendship is ashes, like this pelt of the wulfen we took down together on our first hunt, now I must take you down, like the beast you have become. You are my brother no more. I have been sent with my brothers to watch over the 13th and ensure their loyaly. But I know you are here and by the Allfather I will find you”. With that he turned his back to the flames and stalked away to meet with Vykryl and to face his brothers.... To be continued. A Tale of 18 Hobbyists. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img540/7443/MBdhcp.jpg Vengeance and Glory. A Call to War In the hold of the Scramaseax, mighty warship of the Wolves, A figure clad in darkest black stepped from the shadows, into the firepits flickering light. Once all the wolves were gathered Vykryl, Wolf Priest to this band of warriors drew himself to his full height and began: Brothers, you may wonder why you have been chosen. You may wonder why we are far from home. These are uncertain times and we do not yet know who deserves our trust. But we do know of one who has committed the greatest betrayal of all. Russ himself has dispatched us, not as Hearthguard as we have told our kin, but as Vengeance Seekers, Now I may speak of why we have come. I may tell you of why we follow Fafnir Vol’kyr into a fight that wasn’t ours to begin with. We are here to hunt down Keldane Blackfox, traitor and our once-brother. Keldane came to the Wolves as part of an exchange. Kurze could see how isolated and insular his own legion was becoming. He petitioned his brother primarchs to accept emissaries from the Night Lords. Anything in an attempt to foster bonds of fellowship between his Legion and the others. Most of the Nobler Legions refused Kurze’s request. They did not wish to pollute their ranks with the Night Haunters tainted sons. We know what the legions think we are, and we know what we really are. We are not of the noble sons like Guilliman, Sanguinius, Dorn or Jonson’s benighted scions. We are the outcast, the barbarians, the savages… like Angron’s 12th, Kurze’s 8th, the Khan’s 5th. However some agreed to his request Russ was one of the few…. Like Russ, Konrad Curze knew that sometimes justice had to be earned upon the point of a sword. Sometimes peace had to be bought with blood. Sometimes a populace has to fear us more than its masters before they can truly accept the enlightenment we were once brought. This is a lesson that Russ and Curze learned well. For are we not the animals in the dark? Animals whose howls bring terror to the hearts of our foes?.... We each bring our own brand of fear, as a weapon. The Rout, bestial wolves, and the Haunter’s, night cloaked stalkers… We cannot know the mind of a Primarch, even though we are of their blood. Who knows why Russ listened to that hell-spawned wretch he once called brother. Maybe Russ tried to see the good in him? Maybe he thought a show of kinship might have helped curb some of his brother’s many excesses. Maybe Russ heard his brother’s plea for help and held out a hand in his own, feral way, hoping against hope to bring him back from the darkness that had been threatening to swallow Kurze whole. Or maybe Russ, like Konrad, knew that they were all flawed. After Kurze’s secret, shared in confidence, was cruelly revealed by Fulgrim, the request of Kurze was a way to bring redemption for his son. Maybe our father was willing to offer him that chance. Whatever may, shortly after Russ agreed, Kurze sent us his emissary. He sent us Keldane… The Blackfox. Keldane wasn’t of the pack. He was almost instantly rejected by those of Fyf. But as it was Russ’ decree, none could gainsay him. His word is law and to break his law is death. Even though our instincts railed against this… intruder, we stayed our hands in early retribution. How I now regret that I did not forfeit my life to rid us of the curse that was to come. So as one, we set out make Keldane leave, either by choice or on the red ice. We made sure that Keldane drew the most arduous and dangerous of tasks from within Fyf. It wasn’t his wyrd to die in some mis-begotten challenge, for he was a bad star and so he kept returning when better men did not. How he managed this, none know, but he earned his name on the ice. We called him Blackfox for his heart was darker than the Nostraman night, and his mind as clever and cunning as the mountain vulpine… Eventually he forced his way into the pack, for none could doubt his arm, or, unbelievably, his loyalty to the company. This was how the thread of Blackfox became intertwined with that of Great Fafnir Vol’kyr. Fafnir was a menhir of a man, as broad as he was tall. He was quiet and brooding. Many thought him touched by Lokyar, that he would be inducted into the scouts, however this was not to pass. In time, whether through cursed luck or no, he was to become the reluctant warden of the Blackfox. What started out as wariness, verging on outright hostility, eventually became a grudging respect and finally a friendship forged in battle. Fafnir came to rely on Keldane’s insights and cunning, Blackfox on Fafnir’s skill of the hunt. They often embarked onto the ice together to run down beasts and game. As time went on Fafnir became more gregarious , more likeable and so his standing within the company grew., With Fafnir’s star on the ascendancy, so too did Keldane begin to have more of an influence on the affairs of the company. He eventually even gained a grudging acceptance as a brother of Fyf. While Fafnir learned from Blackfox and became a central figure within the company, so too did Keldane learn from Fafnir. Who knows what secrets he may have gleaned, but his skills as a hunter grew to rival that of any of the Rout. Then even outside of the hunt, they became almost inseparable. They were mirror images of one another in almost every sense, often found in company and always fighting back to back amongst the thickest of foes. But alas the mirror was cracked, the reflection of Fafnir in Blackfox was twisted and flawed. Such was the pride of the Wolves that we did not see it until it was too late. When Keldane left, he took with him all the skills learned on the ice. He allowed Kurze’s twisted heart to poison that which we had taught him. Gone was the honour, gone was the pride, gone was the Keldane we knew and called once called brother. Keldane became the Night Haunters pre-eminent hunter. Not of Ork or Eldar or of beast. No, he broke his bonds of loyalty and became the hunter of his own kin. The betrayal of the Blackfox hit Fafnir hard, as only such base treachery could… It drove him to the edge of sanity and we almost lost him to the Wulfen, such was his pain. Now we hunt, for it is not Fafnir’s shame alone to bear. Blackfox made fools of us all and so he must be made to pay. Keldane may believe he is the perfect hunter, but it was us who taught him and it will be us to bring him low. We may be old dogs, but we never give up all our tricks! So brothers, finish your mjod. Go now to prepare your arms and armour. Tonight we go to hunt one who was once of our own. We have tracked Keldane Once-Brother, to Korianna and it is time to make this hunter, become the hunted. We shall run him to ground. And if we have to kill every whore-son Night Lord & traitor that stands in our path, in order to get to that piece of skitja we once taught and trusted then so much the better… We do this deed for Fafnir!! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img540/7443/MBdhcp.jpg A perfect hunt & revelations http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151012_224517.jpg The ambush had been almost flawless. Almost…. Recon squad “Bjorn” sat in the cover of a burnt out hab building. The area had once been a popular trading district and there had been many shops, stalls and homes. Now it was deserted, the wares long gone or turned to ruin and the bones of unfortunate citizens were spread across the square, picked clean by carrion birds where they lay. It had been gruelling work, hunting down the traitors and many of our leads had been dead ends. Keldane Blackfox was always just out of reach. Hel-born scum. It took all of my restraint not to emit a growl at the thought and give our position away. Entering the plaza a lone Wolf stumbled and fell. He tried to rise, but failed & began a painful crawl across the rubble. Scant seconds behind him, followed a gaggle of cackling Night Lords. Having thought they had found easy sport, they took their time inflicting maiming wounds on the stricken Wolf who made no sound and could barely defend himself. It was only after the lead Night Lord examined their prey and discovered something amiss, that the trap was sprung. As the gore soaked, midnight clad marines looked around in confusion, Hjold Halfborn’s sniper rifle silently coughed and the closest Night Lord dropped. Then 2 more fell and they began to draw their real weapons and look for cover, not knowing from where they were being picked off. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151012_224809.jpg At a signal the sky blazed as grey clad marines dropped amongst their midnight brethren. With glinting axes and barking bolt pistols, Kjaran Cold-heart led his pack into the fray against his once brethren. More Night Lords dropped, their armour sundered by blade and bolt. Kjaran, Kassill, Skjara Redwolf and the Wolf-Blade began to reap a tally of cut threads forcing the Night Lords to breaking point. Some of the skitja stayed and fought, then died. It allowed the leader and his party to retreat towards the relative safety of an outlying building and from there, to make a stand. The safety was just an illusion however as Fafnir led his terminator clad pack into their midst. Where, before, there had been a solid wall, now it became a pile of pulped rubble. Fafnir and Starkadr burst through, shields to the fore and hammers swinging, followed on by the remaining 3 warriors of their pack. All hell broke loose for a few brief seconds as the Night Lords tried to recover from the turn of events. However the truly smart ones turned and fled before their armour was caved in By Fafnir and his Hearth-Hammers. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20150422_184917.jpg As the two remaining Night Lords fled the scene, one collapsed in a heap, careening head-long into a fragile cart demolishing it, the second rounded the corner and was away. It was at that point I called Kjaran’s pack back from trying to pursue. We didn’t want to get too strung out and picked off ourselves. We had already lost a lot of brothers that way. The little Lordlings may not have our heart for battle, but they do have a cunning which should never be under estimated. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/gallery_79710_9603_1175298.jpg Seeing Kjaran’s pack give up the chase, and watching the one Night Lord slip through his grasp, Fafnir flew into a terrible rage, like a baresark of old times… In truth I feared for my safety in that moment. He stormed over to me and there we were. Face to face. Kjaran's assault team created a cordon around myself & Fafnir, keeping my pack out and his pack away. “Why in all of the Hel’s did you allow that piece of skitja to escape?” “Who said we let him escape, Jarl Fafnir?” “One of Curze’s night cursed sons slipped away” Fafnir was getting dangerously an I could scent the kill urge on him. “Torvald, did we let the scum get away?” I called calmly over my shoulder, never breaking eye contact with Fafnir. “ No Jarl Agvald.” “And why is that?” “Our bolt rounds were envenomed Jarl Agvald… The one who fled, I wounded him myself. His wound will not heal and we can follow his blood trail back to the vipers nest”. I kept my voice low so only Fafnir could hear, for although I do not particularly like this man, I would not want to shame him in front of his men “So you see Jarl Fafnir, he hasn’t escaped at all. In fact he is doing something that no amount of interrogation would have given us”. I think I even managed to grin back at him, for his face twisted in frustration as he turned away. “We lost a wolf to set up this trap, that hunters blood will be on your hands Agvald” grunted Fafnir as he gestured towards the fallen man who had led the Lordlings into our trap. I believe he was trying to find a way to save face in front of his men, it was a shock to him when I told him who the dead wolf really was. “That is neither a Wolf or a Hound, but a blood-mad butcher, Jarl Fafnir. The World Eater was too far gone to give us any information, so we cut out his vocal chords and dumped him in traitor territory near a known Night Lords outpost. He knew where we were for we told him, and we knew he would come here looking for a fight. Apart from Hamma’s hand, we didn’t lose anyone”. It was then that the anger bled out of Jarl Fafnir and some of his humour returned. “It is a good thing that Hamma is right handed then, isn’t it? Tell me though, this was not a part of my plan, who decided to change it?” “I did roared a voice from the edge of the circle and as one we all bowed”. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Korianna was one of the 500 or so worlds which made up the Ultramar sector of space. It was a forge world supplying men and materiel to the ever expanding great crusade. Not a major world, it was however famed for having a Knight household standing over the world as protectors. The ultimate fate of the Knight household is unknown, but from archived records it would seem that a coup of sorts took place and like on many worlds across the Imperiumt, the Knight household was ravaged by civil war. It was around this time that the Word Bearers, Night Lords and World Eaters descended upon Korianna and despoiled this once verdant and productive world. A Space Wolves contingent was sent out to the world shortly after, believed by the Ultramarines to be one of the much-maligned watchpacks. Having ascertained that Lord Guillemann was indeed loyal to the Imperium, they were released from their duties and deployed to Korianna, to monitor the traitor incursion. The total strength of the force which actually deployed, was and still is unknown, however it is fairly safe to assume that it was well beyond the 10 man unit initially sent out. In these uncertain times it is suspected that the Ultramarines allowed the Space Wolves to act autonomously and if they were halting incursions into Ultramar then they were left free to act as they saw fit. In and of itself, this unusual display of leniency on the part of the 13th Legion shows just how stretched the Ultramarines had become by the unfolding treachery enacted upon them. The Space Wolves were known to use diverse tactics in hunting down the traitors on Korianna. Often relying on guerilla tactics such as ambushing their prey. Commonly this would be a multi-unit operation with a specially prepared kill-zone In the example above we can clearly see that the ambush was orchestrated by "Bjorn" or Bear squad (given this name due to the amount of equipment they carried, they were always "loaded for bear") http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151012_224809.jpg Once the trap was initiated, fast moving units would descend upon the foe to cause confusion, in this case it was Kjaran Coldhearts assault squad, the "Ice Blades" http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090504.jpg http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090752.jpg From markings and armour types seen on the individual members we can tell that, they have come from several packs. In the first image we can clearly identify mark 3 and the composite mark 5 plate being used. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090628.jpg Kjaran is bearing the mark of Vaerangi on his kneepad to display his seniority over the Wolves in his charge. When his pack was not ravaged by attrition, they bore the moniker the "Ironsides". This was due to their famed use of mark 3 armour and being at the forefront of each engagement. The anvil on which opponents were broken. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090637.jpg This image is of an "Ironside", known as the Wolf-Blade. Clearly displaying the former pack marking on his kneepad. Initially they lost very few packmates further cementing their Ironside reputation, however as teh siege ground on, losses began to mount and packs were amalgamated to keep them at fighting efficiency. An example of this is the unknown Space Wolf from Baresark pack http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090712.jpg Known for ranging ahead of the main force and found where fighting was fiercest. It is believed that Baresark squad suffered as high a rate of casualties from the wolf-curse as from the enemy. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090752.jpg "Iceblade" pack is also made up of mark 2 marines displaying the markings of the pack formerly called the "Stalwarts". A group of veteran assault marines who had fought side-by-side for decades, they gained teir name for being ever present and always holding when situations seemed lost. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090836.jpg http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090813.jpg While some wore their veterancy in he form of augmetics gained through injury in war others displayed it with honour plates or upgrades to their armour, such as seen here born by the warrior known as Kassill. http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151019_090825.jpg Casualties were a constant concern for the Space Wolves as there was probably little chance of reinforcement. This image shows the warrior known as Hamma, just after the plaza ambush. He has suffered a catastrophic injury to his left hand. In later pict recordings his corpse was discovered. It appears that he had a hand weapon fitted to his armour in place of his missing hand. This was to eventually become his undoing as it limited his ability to reload his weapon. Unable to do so he charged an enemy position and fought in hand to hand combat. Lacking flexibility in his weapon arm he was eventually brought down by a band of rabid World Eaters, but not before having reaped a tally of his foe-men ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi Guys, thanks for such a warm welcome here. I have always been into 40K but recently I have been finding myself gravitating more towards the 30K side of things. What I have always loved about both is the depth of history, the background, stories and images.... Since I got the first HH book when it was released "Horus Rising" I have always wanted to delve in, but I have never really been sure how. I have to admit I have for a long time fancied doing a Luna Wolves army, but I just love the Vlka Fenryka too much to turn my back on them and when Prospero Burns came along, that sealed the deal for me. That and the gobsmackingly beautiful artwork by such folks as Adrian Smith in the Collected Visions books I do not know anyone in real life who collects and plays 30K and I very rarely play 40K as it is. For me gaming will not be a big deal, it will be the stories, plots and imagery that will be the main driving force for me. That and for the first time in a long time, I have wanted to write a little bit of history and character for my own models, make them a bit more personal to me I also suffer from modelling ADHD, so I rarely ever get any models completed, so this hopefully will be a good way of spurring me on to get something completed. I have written a few wee pieces for my models, but I will not put them out until a model is done Again hopefully this will be a good motivator. So, anyways, as with all good WIP threads, here is some of what I have been working on.. All this stuff is between 20 & 90% done.... You have probably noticed that conversion work has been kept to a minimum, as I am pretty sucky at it, so I have been working on my painting skills instead. Currently my Knight is up for painting... Let me know what you think and also what you might like to see me actually get finished next Thanks for looking
