Space Hulk: Deathwatch 1st Company Veteran Nereon

Despite my fairly regular lurking/posting on B&C, I haven't actually picked up a brush or bought any models for several years, instead absorbing myself in Black Library and doing the odd bit of fan fic and artwork. After hanging out with my local BL support group, it turns out that all of us have been looking for an excuse to start playing again but due to our jobs, we're focusing on Specialist Games, starting with Space Hulk. As we're all big fluff nuts, we've decided to go and paint our own chapters, and have a Deathwatch Terminator Squad go and clean out a 'Stealer-infested hulk.

I humbly present to you the first model I've put together in years, Veteran Brother Nereon of the Carcharodons.

Based on Tyberos the Red Wake, with a Gorgon Terminator Storm Bolter, Tartaros pattern torso, power fist, helmet, tacked together with blu tac for the moment.

Notes

• Has retained Terminator Armour from the Carcharodons, rather than newer Indomitus Pattern.

• Cursory inspection indicates Brother Nereon's non-standard armour is of mixed origins, featuring extensive modifications including a prominence of molecular bonding studs.

• It is noted that Brother Nereon has reluctantly allowed Watch Fortress Boreas' armourers to paint and consecrate the armour in Deathwatch colours, though he has retained the Gorgon-pattern storm bolter.

• Observed adornment of two skulls, presumed trophies of the Badab War as close inspection reveals a engraving of the Astral Claws chapter symbol on both skulls.

Holy... Wow. I love that! Can't wait to see it painted. The pose is so super hero but it really works here.

I love the idea of putting together Space Hulk models to start out as well. Are you going to arm them all as the original BA in the game? o

Thanks for the comments guys! Jeff: the basic idea is to have the same load out as the stuff in game but we are pretty flexible. I know that Neverborn is using a snap together terminator painted as a Flesh Tearer but he may switch out to Deathwing. It would've been easier to retain the assault load out but I really like the tactical Power Fist and Stormbolter combo, whilst retaining an almost old school World Eater legion look to it. Much more work to do but I need to have this finished by the 22nd for our game!

You might consider dropping magnets in, even if you don't have the other arms yet. Some day when and if you move on to a regular 40/30K army it would be nice to have the ability to swap them out for a more conventional loadout. I know you're just getting back into it, but you could save yourself a lot of money and headache later. Or, just keep them as dedicated SH termies, really. I plan to finish my Blood Angels and possible consider doing up some Deathwing sooner or later for that expansion. I love Space Hulk, personally, but it all depends if my family/friends will continue playing it enough to make it worthwhile to get the expanisons.

Yeah come on slacker, get some paint on that miniature! msn-wink.gif Or at least some glue...

I'm definitely going for Deathwing, just waiting to see whether to go for the assault cannon or the straight-up tactical load out. Ah the joys of Dark Vengeance miniatures...no pinning or magnets for me!

Looking forward to see how Nereon comes out, he looks awesome so far smile.png

I met up with Never_born today and we picked up some supplies from GW Plaza store in central London, namely some paints, green-stuff and modelling tools.

I didn't say so before, but a lot of the cuts to separate Tyberos' torso and the shoulder plates from the assault claws were done with a Dremel attachment used mainly to cut through steel (talk about overkill...), but tonight I cracked out my old drill set to pin the parts together.

First things first, I removed the release agent residue by scrubbing all the parts with a toothbrush after dipping them in warm water with detergent. The toothbrush had the added benefit of getting rid of any leftover resin powder left by the Dremel.

I also did a straight up head swap with Tyberos' helmet. Firstly, it's a way cooler helmet than the other one, which wasn't really in proportion especially when you consider the skulls dangling from the model's belt. I had to do a lot of belt sanding to get the helmet to fit comfortably into the armoured cowl, and it was on the verge on being unusable. I needed to get the head all the way to the back so I could tilt the helm looking towards the storm bolter.

By fluke rather than skill, I managed to line up the arm to my hacked off shoulder pad at the right angle. The gap will be filled with green-stuff. Every single joint has been pinned into place. Call me old school or zealous, but I like my models solid (Hi Jeff, I considered the magnets but a. it's for Space Hulk where my load out is fixed, and b. they won't arrive in time for the game, and c. I'm not doing a Carcharodons army any time soon).

Stopping for the night. Quite happy with the pose, but will need to do some more cleanup and sanding particularly on the inside left shoulder pad, before green stuffing. You'll also note I have some battle damage, where I'm gouging out scratches and bullet holes from current and previous conflicts. This is well used, constantly repaired armour.

I'm on the fence as to whether I should green-stuff some of those hanging leather straps like on this model, dangling from the belt. So far, the feel of the model is sort of half way between a mini-contemptor and perhaps an old school World Eater. What do you guys reckon?

I'm leaning away from the leather strips. To me those always evoke imagery of nobility, honor and classical Roman legions. None of those things strike me as very Charcharadon, to be frank. They are brutal, guileless and they fight dirty. Really dirty. I can see the connection to World Eaters, but for them I get the feeling of a sad decline of nobility lost. For Sharks, I feel like the trophies and battle damage will stand on their own, under a nice sheen of freshly spilt blood. ;)

Today's update: assembly and Greenstuffing: I've been dreading doing the spacer for the torso as I'm terrible with Greenstuff, but rummaging through my bits box, I found one of these:

It's a Sanguinary Guard backpack. Or, rather, it was. I basically chopped it in half, and retained the end, using my makeshift belt sander:

The result is this:

A conveniently sized torso spacer. I filed it down to the desired height and after a few tries, got the right position.

Next up was Greenstuffing. I haven't used it in 8 years and last time I tried I was awful. It honestly took about 2-3 hours to filling the gaps convincingly, and even then it's only the trunking between the arms and smoothing out the gaps in the torso.

I'm probably going to add a little battle damage first thing tomorrow, before spraying this guy.
