  1. Hello Fraters! Having lurked and occasionally posted over the last few months I have decided to create a WIP log to document my re-entry to the hobby. This was going to be a Raven Guard-based log as I have a Strikeforce to build but I have already paused that plan, bought Kill Team Octarius and started some terrain painting. This is very much WIP as I test out washes and contrast paints and basically learn to paint. I only painted a few minis when I was at school, I think it must have been around 1989/1990. Edit: title updated to reflect that I have now bought two KT boxes and have been painting Genestealers to refresh my v.1 Space Hulk game.
  2. So for a while I've been toying with SketchUp to make all sorts of models with the idea of 3d printing them and then having them cast. It originally started with some Homeworld inspired ships which then kind of became my interpretation of pre-Imperial vessels: http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/LEGION%20ship/Somevariants_zps6b58178e.jpg And the first print: http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/LEGION%20ship/2013-11-01115818_zpscf693308.jpg Later on I started working on some other ship models that are more BFG influenced: http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Fleetteaser_zpse59fe328.jpg I've been collaborating on them with Fox Box Games who will produce them. We eventually managed to do a first print thanks to the lovely fellows at the Cardiff University: http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/prints_zps8fcda915.png http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/2014-12-02160004_zpsad11030b.jpg And now we're in the process of casting the ships in resin (please ignore the filthy xenos in the background): http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/miscast%20destroyer%201_zpsrbg8wkrb.jpg I currently have four types of escorts (2 destroyers and 2 corvettes) and some boarding pods printed, and hopefully we'll be able to release them later in the summer. Depending on how those will go, I can contemplate finishing up the larger transport ships and maybe also these. Besides ships I've also worked on some more 28mm scaled stuff. Space Hulk and Necromunda have always fascinated me and for a long time I've tried to make a model version of Philip Sibbering's Ecopolis. I eventually moved to something based more on my own ideas, which you can see here: http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Underground%20facility%201.0%20-%20006a_zpskf1dwgwl.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Underground%20facility%201.0%20-%20006c_zpsvucpmoxc.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Underground%20facility%201.0%20-%20006b_zps2c2bokgt.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Underground%20facility%201.0%20-%20008%20equipment_zpsz2zstyix.jpg I still haven't been able to build my own infantry models (yet), but I have been working on designing some equipment for them: http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Clubs%201.0%20-%20001_zpst5tskn7y.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Auto%20pistols%20-%20teched%20up%20002_zpsxh3g9ouv.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Rifles%201.0%20-%20002_zpse7znj2qy.jpg So yeah...let me know what you think! I'll keep this thread updated with my process as we go along!
  3. SKIP ME! >>>Go to current playtest version<<< Mission 1 FORCIBLE ENTRY FORCES & DEPLOYMENT Space Marines: The Space Marine player has a Sergeant with storm bolter and power sword, a Space Marine armed with assault cannon and power fist, and three Space Marines armed with storm bolters and power fists. Genestealers: The Genestealer player begins with one blip on each of the squares indicated. In addition, the Genestealer player receives two reinforcement blips per turn which may enter play through either of the entry areas on the map. Once a bulkhead is secured, the Genestealer player receives only one reinforcement blip per turn. Once both bulkheads are secured, the Genestealer player no longer receives reinforcement blips. SPECIAL RULES Bulkheads: Bulkheads are much tougher than ordinary doors and can be sealed permanently shut. Bulkheads are placed as open doors at the start of the mission. During the mission the Space Marine player can close bulkheads in the same way as any other doors. Once closed, bulkheads cannot be re-opened. Bulkheads are so thick that they cannot be destroyed. VICTORY The Space Marine player wins if he secures both bulkheads and destroys all of the Genestealers on the map. Failure to achieve either objective is a Genestealer win. DESIGN NOTES This mission is based on the Seize and Secure mission from the Harbinger of Despair campaign, though it has been reduced (one squad of Terminators vice two, smaller map). I've also rearranged the map, though not with any serious forethought, so I imagine we may see some significant changes as a result of playtesting. The intent with this mission is simply to introduce players to the basic rules of the game. It is intended to be fairly short without a complex strategy for either player. PLAYTESTING I've provided a cartesian grid underlay to enable clear communication of which spaces players may refer to. For example, the first Space Marine to enter the map is placed on square AG19, whereas the initial Genestealer blips are placed at squares T22 and P27. Feel free to suggest changing things around, though the desired end state is that we'll have a fairly simple map and strategy. The mission should by no means be a cakewalk for the Space Marine player - he should suffer 3 casualties on average. This one is a beginner mission. The one thing that I'm worried about is the inclusion of the bulkheads. These are not part of the 3rd edition game, but players can easily represent them using standard door tiles. Still, they may be considered "advanced" even though the concept and mechanics of the bulkheads is merely an adaptation of the standard doors. I think that we can get away with them since Indomitus is additive to Space Hulk - anyone playing must already have Space Hulk and will likely be familiar with the rules and game play.

  5. AKA: How I learned to stop worrying and love the drybrush AKA: Ambitious but rubbish AKA: Lore is more what you call guidelines than actual rules AKA: Paint it any colour as long as it's black AKA: An idea isn't a project log Disclaimer: This is a General 40k log. I can't see myself sticking with one project for too long at the moment. This will be strange. I'll try and stay visually friendly to the 40k universe, but I will bend the lore as required for my projects. After 15-16 years in the hobby I think I'm entitled to! Think surreal stuff and mixed IP, mostly using GW models. I favour tabletop standard models with a weathered style, no pro painted eye candy here, sorry! I'm currently working on a Space Hulk Genestealer Kill Team and (non Space Hulk!) Kill Team Board/Terrain. I've been busy over the last couple of months. I wanted to start Kill Team with a friend in time for the UK COVID re-opening this week. Dithering with colour schemes and hay-fever fatigue has made me miss the deadline. I'm nearly there though! Test model and test base: I have to find every way not to paint something before I can decide on a colour scheme. After trying a few things with the unused half of the Genestealers I circled back to my original idea of Xenomorph style Genestealers in a very under highlighted style. It's just Chaos Black liberally sprayed on with an all over dry brush of Scavenblight Dinge followed by an all over wash of Seraphim Sepia, which is my new favourite magic wash (Move over Agrax!) I've never been a big nids fan, but I was worried I would never finish my kill team if I went for my usual default of elaborately kitbashed guard regiments or Inqusition warbands. It also seemed fun to play non Imperial with my 40k newbie friend picking Wolves... I've had the 2014 Space Hulk box for a while (Since 2014) and the Hive Mind Started calling to me. Even I could manage to paint 9 monopose Genstealers right? Being monopose models the main challenge during the build was the basing. A good number of the Space Hulk Genies have amazing bits of er, space hulk moulded onto them. I wanted to retain that, but also make the starship parts seem like a plausible part of the base rather than just stuck on. I have some necromunda/industrial bases but It was hard to make the Space Hulk bits blend in. The largest ones didn't quite fit on 40mm bases so I've obtained some 50mm bases, probably the only innovation from Centurions I approve of . In my day you had 25mm slot bases for troops, 40mm for terminators and 60mm for dreadnoughts (and your kid brother with his WFB had square bases). Now days every man and his dog has a custom base size... In the end I used a mix of sand and chopped up sprue to make fine rubble. After becoming more environmentally concious this year I've decided to stop throwing away used sprues (with no option for recycling them in the UK), and use them for basing or scratch builds. I'm planning to top it with an Ice and Snow wash from precision Ice and Snow. So why haven't I finished 9 models in 2 months? The truth? I spent over a month doing a little bit of de mould lining each evening and not much else. I then decided to start the Kill Team terrain as a parallel project, which is a terrible idea! A great secret I learned from a WHC podcast was that the Kill Team battlefield is a similar size to a standard noticeboard size available in the UK. I already had a cork notice board with only 1cm larger dimensions so I used it to create: Crossroads! I chose to make the road a central feature because thought it would be versatile. Add buildings by the road and you have a small city of death. Add some low rise terrain and the same board becomes a rural battlefield. I got the cork sheet from a cork map of the world I no longer needed and used DIY sharp sand. The areas outside the road are deliberately under detailed so the board is more modular with removable terrain and easier to store. WIP and rather good value laser cut buildings from TC combat: I wanted some more ancient ruins rather than the usual bombed out wasteland, so it was always going to be grass or desert on the board rather than the usual grey or scrapyard vibes you see for 40k. In a bit of a marmite decision I chose a 'Summer Flowers' static grass blend from a model railway provider. My first thought was to use dead grass blends, but to do that realistically would have increased the complexity and time budget. In the end I wanted something that wouldn't depress me to look at in these challenging times and something that's certainly different. The road was painted with art shop greys to save money (which I then wasted by using about
  6. Hi all, A quick question — has anyone converted their Space Hulk Terminators so that their bases slot into regular 40mm bases and if so, what was the best means of attachment? Magnets or pins? I ask as although I want to be able to use them with the rest of my Archangels 40K army, I still want to be able to play Space Hulk with them and that's difficult to do if they're permanently on 40mm bases.
  7. With the board games Doomsday Countdown and Fireteam (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368871-new-warhammer-boxed-games-for-2021/) due to be released and my recent decision to get back into Rogue Trader by starting Squats and Chaos Squats, I have been thinking a lot about the 'gateway' boxsets available when I had hair and didn't have debts. I am sure Im not the only one whos first taste of battle was playing Space Crusade (also the most played game on my Amiga  ). Soon after that I found a copy of Space Hulk in W H Smiths on clearance and spent most of the day winding my Mother up to the point her only options were to push me into oncoming traffic or just buy me the game to shut me up (I'm still here, so guess what she chose to do?) and not long after that I got a copy of Tyranid Attack for my birthday. Over the years I also dabbled in Advanced Space Crusade (pretty much Tyranid Attack 1st edition, used the same board sections but the rules were more complicated), Ultra Marines (used the Space Hulk floorplans but had Marine scouts fighting each other), Space Fleet, Space Marine/Adeptus Titanicus, Trolls in the Pantry and Oi Dats my Leg!!! amongst other less memorable offerings by GW. Even now I still have many fond memories of these games, and want to bring back a little bit of that nostalga from my childhood, and maybe do the same for the other Frater here as well, so I was thinking about recreating one of those oldschool goldies with the newer sculpts and scratch built boards. I did run this idea by Lame Beard who pointed out someone else here on B&C has already tried this with Space Crusade, and the thought of recreating all those sections of Space Hulk floorplans does give me nightmares ngl, so I have decided to turn my hand tooooooo... Drum roll please...... Well Advanced Space Crusade / Tyranid Attack, board and minis first rules later. I only used this art because it kicks ass and is superior to the TA artwork. This will be a slow burn project to work on between my 1st edition Squat armies and my current edition stuff so I can keep things fresh and mix it up a little during lockdown. For the minis I will be using the current GW stuff with a few tweaks to get the old vibe, poofy sleeves and bad hair for the scouts, Nids I am not too sure about, I may try hacking up and re-sculpting the heads so they have the same look as the old ones. Genestealers, Hybrids and Terminators I wont bother, the Current Stealers I have no issue with and the Hybrids and Terminators used the old Space Hulk sculpts that were frankly a load of rubbish, the current incarnations will be fine. Board wise I will use thick card for the base and polystyrene for the fleshy bits, mainly because Im broke and I already have everything I need laying about already (seriously, I cant get from my sofa to my sink without tripping over a stack of flat packed boxes or a pile of crap I have collected 'just in case'). The only thing I need to change really is increase the size of each board slightly as bases have gotten bigger over the years, Tyranid Attack had rules in WD for Dreadnoughts and the grid on the board was marked out for 25mm bases and the current minis will have no chance of squeezing up a hive ships... nostril. Ngl its gonna be fun making the interior of a 'Nid ship, not something you see every day. Another good thing about Advanced Space Crusade was the WD rules for using Orks or Imperial Guard instead of Scouts, handy as I have these already, so hopefully I should get a lot of use out of this board when I finish it. Also just for funsies I have decided on a mini diorama as well based on the Space Hulk Deathwing story, I'm gonna convert up Two Heads Talking, Lame Bear, Slippery Weasel, Leaky Toilet and the rest of the boys, both in and out of Terminator armour. No particular reason why, just really loved the story as a kid.
  8. The steam summer sale has started and runs to July 5. Discounts range from 25% off DOW III to and 80% off Space Hulk with a lot of variation in between. It seems the only thing not on sale is the Eisenhorn Xenos game.
