Off the Chain Praetor

Hi,

I am going to be using 30k marines in a local 40k campaign over the next 6 months.

There is a story and RPG element to this, so i have to stick to a Praetor Warlord choice until Guilliman gets released *Squee*

Now, i have been given a bonus secret mission, if i Kill the opposing Warlord, any Monstrous Creatures, of Vehicles, i get 5 points more, and it stacks. So if i kill 2 Wave Serpents, a Wraighlord and the Farser, thats 20 extra points.

So now the question is, how do i kit him to make sure he smashes face every single time, without fail?

Give him a Thunder hammer/power fist. It can take on any of those threats. Also give him the gladius relic.

Technically since the Wave Serpent has a serpent "shield" wouldn't the gladius relic ignore it? :P jk it wouldn't mean anything anyway

If he's Alpha Legion, he can ALWAYS take a power dagger, regardless of whatever other wargear options (including terminator armor). So, that's your +1 attack for an extra specialist weapon, whether he brings a relic blade or a powerfist.

If you're Alpha Legion (and you can be, even if all of your models are painted like Ultramarines; see, e.g., Index Astartes IV, pp. 33-35; Horus Heresy: Extermination, pp. 82, 87), I'd recommend the following: Praetor in artificer, plasma pistol, paragon blade, power dagger (imagine a power-dagger bayonet attached to the plasma pistol!), melta bombs, digital lasers. Total points: 165. Total St5, AP2 attacks with WS6 at I5: 6, and 7 on the charge.  If you're worried someone might take a mighty poke back at him, you can give him an Iron Halo, too.

Maybe give him a jump pack. And a squad of Reavers (see Sons of Horus).

Just a heads up Sully ab Bellum. You should take down the individual points costs ie X points for meltabombs. It's against forum rules.

Otherwise, sounds like a sneaky tactic, and the plasma pistol with a power-dagger bayonet sounds awesome!

Dallo

Dallo, thanks for the heads up.  Fixed.

Also, Dallo - noting the pattern on the shield in your avatar, have you ever heard of the 564th Missile Squadron (defunct)?  Check out their insignia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/564th_Missile_Squadron#mediaviewer/File:564th_Missile_Squadron.png.

He's Ultramarine, so only has Furious Charge, and i will sink about 200-220 in him.

But im thinking AA, with Iron Halo, Paragon Blade, Power Fist, Melta Bombs, Digital Lasers and MC the PB. Done.

Yep.  Sounds wicked sick.

Yeah he does im afraid, its part of the Campaign we all had to pick a Character to sort of follow through. I was going to take one of the Delegatus new Consuls, but thought him to be too flimsy haha.

Now, question is, how do i run this Character? Command squad in LR?

See post above wherein he's secretly Alpha Legion (only you and your campaign organizer would have to know!), he's wearing a jump pack, and he's rolling deep with 15 Sons of Horus Reavers.  I will drop the Alpha Legion idea, I promise, but only after I've had the chance to share this gem of an idea:  your army is secretly Alpha Legion, albeit wearing Ultramarines colors, and only you and the campaign organizer know.  You're on the loyalist team (because Ultramarines, right?), but your missions will actually help the traitor team (e.g., in a team game, you get bonus victory points - secretly, and for you only, if your loyalist teammate's HQ character buys it).  Then, just when your loyalist teammates begin to grow suspicious of you (and the traitors start to like having you around), BAM!!  Forge World drops HH:5, you get your TRUE legion rules, and now your Ultramarines actually ARE Ultramarines, and you essentially switch sides to the side you were always on to begin with (but not really, even though only you and your campaign organizer know that).  BRILLIANT!!

That all being said and done, if you want him to be a straight-up-and-down Ultramarine, I guess my question for you is, what is your Rite of War?

If you want a PITA Preator, you can always use a Jetbike. Give him a Paragon Blade, Thunder Hammer or Chain Fists, Iron Halo, Melta Bombs, Book 4 Relic (cuz why not?), etc. This should easily run you 220+ but give you a 2+/4++ T5 TEQ unit with Jetbike speed (thus can jink if needed but you have a 4++ so why would you?) and still have a Heavy Bolter for shooting.

You could also technically add on the Nanyte Blaster for more shenanigans since it doesn't, afaik, interfere with the Legion Specific relics from Book 4 and thus add another 40points onto him.

But thats only if you want a GIANT points sink and bullseye all on a single jetbikes footprint.

To kill vehicles, you need Meltabombs or Chainfist (requiring Terminator Armour). Chainfists are better; you get more attacks with it, at the expense of giving up the additional attack, and you can't take a boarding shield to make that loss worth it, while the Legion Relic isn't specialist either, so you're stuck with "only" 5 attacks including the Digital Weapons.

However, it means you then can't take a Combat Augment Array and guarantee that Instant Death hit against the Enemy Monster/Warlord IC on the Paragon Blade. Meanwhile, the Thunder Hammer ensures that the fast beasties hit last next turn and with Hit and Run can't run away even if they survive the Instant Death. If you really want, then you can get I6 S6 AP3 Rending to instant kill Eldar Farseers before they can move (they still get their Invulnerable save, however), but unless you're charging Triarchs or Space Marine Command Squads with Storm Shields, there's not much call for this. Remember that the hammer doesn't affect vehicles like walkers with Concussion; so pick up your Meltabombs.

For your invulnerable save; either you can go for a Boarding Shield (forcing you to give up 1 attack in CC for Defensive Grenades and a 5++), Combat Shield (5++ in CC and trust to Look Out Sir to take AP2 hits) or the Iron Halo. Remember than a Deredeo Dreadnought with the shield Pavise thing gives him a 3++ with the Halo, but it's kind of susceptible to assaults with only 1 attack and no Power Fist, AND benefits mostly from being static while your Praetor goes on rampage. Despite losing the attack, I think that the Boarding Shield is a fantastic choice. Normally it's a budget option, because I don't need 2 melee weapons even if they're both specialist, so free Defensive Grenades work wonders. Remember with the shield you can throw Blind Grenades (according to an email that's making its way around the web but is yet to make it into an FAQ). YMMV, but I typically find that removing one of your opponents attacks can be major. Of course, if you're expecting to be doing all of the assaulting, such as by charging out of a Spartan, then it's less useful.

The Nanyte Blaster is sheer filth. You can vaporise an entire squad, and potentially have the wounds nearby caused by the explosions kill the IC. Remember though that an IC is still considered part of the unit until he voluntarily leaves; so even if he's alive, but not within coherency, he can either force the unit to give up their move, or give up on their protection. However, he is still entitled to Look Out Sir! if they're within 6" so no Nanyte Blasting then Sniping him out.

Can he take a chainfist if he's not wearing tactical dreadnought armor? My book(s) are about a mile and a half out of reach.

No he can't it was my mistake.

Jet bike would be amazing. But not very fluffy. I'm thinking AA praetor on foot in a squad smile.png

Jetbikes in 30k is never not fluffy unless your a Salamander on Nocturne due to its gravitational fluctuations!

Plus, you get to stick it to Eldar and 1-up them at their own Jetbike shenanigans game.

But, if its the only jetbike in your list, totally understandable..wouldn't make much sense.. *glances at Sammael*

Furious charge as legion tactics you say?

If you wanted to be a complete just-for-lols, off-the-hook HQ you could go:

Forgelord, Rad grenades, Combat Shield, Cyber dude of +1 inv, Gladius Invictus - 165 pts

Charging you get 5 attacks at rending, I6, AP3 that inflict ID vs T4 or below and ignores shields.

Stick him in a raider with some tacticals and drown the enemy unit. If you went veteran tacticals you could give them tankhunters and power mauls so they have 40 charging S7 attacks at I4. Wounding Castellax on a 3+ before they strike?

Again, just for giggle sake.
