grand_master85
During a previous thread, I asked for some painting advice and found myself at the door of ever helpful Chaplain Mortis, who gave me some excellent pointers and how-to's for a good Imperial Fists scheme. I have to say, I'm rather pleased with him. I'm not exactly Golden Demon standard so this works rather well for me. Not sure if I've overdone the chipping, mind. Really wanted my guys to have a battleworn look, the 'fresh off the production line' doesn't work for me. Think more Death Guard, or someone who has been through the wars and is stuck in a siege. There are some parts that need touching up etc, or are a bit slapdash, but this is the tester of the scheme. Last step is to just use some weathering powder on his feet/legs and he is done, basing aside. Then I have to figure out how I'll do that. Anyhoo, here's my Imperial Fists tactical marine: http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsb8fdhez0.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsdkwcone1.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps1dpfx1tm.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsyenlg4hi.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303660-hearts-of-stone-will-of-iron-an-imperial-fists-wip-blog/ Share on other sites

grand_master85
Haha thanks. @firegolem. I really couldn't but the. I found some techniques and made one absolutely essential find; an airbrush! I only used it for the basecoat of Tamiya Flat Yellow but it worked an absolute treat @Frostmourne I've already got 40 tacticals and the IF command squad, so we'll on my way. Plus, it's payday next week :D can afford to actually get some mk III despoilers for the Templar Brethren upgrade kit I have lying around Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303660-hearts-of-stone-will-of-iron-an-imperial-fists-wip-blog/#findComment-3955126 Share on other sites

Brother Callius
Lovely shade of yellow you achieved. Dom_
Looks absolutely fantastic. A little too chipped for my personal tastes, but that's just me. I Look forward to seeing an army of these soon! m_r_parker
I will agree - this is the perfect shade of yellow for a Imperial Fist. Matte - no shiny armour from use of washes. Not too bright (aka Lemon), and not too far down the mustard-y brown or orange. Personally, there's a bit too much chipping going on, but it's been well executed. Mind sharing the how-to for us new IF players? StruManChu
Absolutely superb... I'm glad you finally took the plunge! Great yellow, and lovely detail. Can't wait to see more! Millicant
Looks good! I'd say a few less chips, as its a bit too much. Then I would add a bit of streaking or grime to complete the look. Nicely done. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303660-hearts-of-stone-will-of-iron-an-imperial-fists-wip-blog/#findComment-3955235 Share on other sites
grand_master85
Yeah I know a lot of people aren't so hot on the overly chipped look, but I kinda like it. I'll see how the next chap looks with a little less chipping and go from there :) @ m_r_parker The yellow is actually a little more golden, can never get a decent picture with my iPhone! The yellow is basically a Tamiya flat yellow base, with the metal and black painted. Then I sponge chipped with VMA cam black brown and then dos a gloss varnish, followed by a pin way with AK interactive enamel paints. Was surprisingly easy! @strumanchu, that's assuming I hadn't already stripped them ;) the Alphas weren't working for me. I've also got a Templar Brethren upgrade kit, just waiting for payday to get some despoilers! Galron
Wait, there isn't any highlighting or anything on the yellow? That's awesome! I love the color, I hate the glaringly bright neon yellow Imperial Fists I always see. I like the chipping and weathering, it looks like those grainy pics FW likes to have in the fluff sections. Tyrannicide
Nicely done. I'll probably be shifting away from the Citadel yellows and going the Tamiya route as well. I'm curious, was it airbrushed? Slips
See yellow isnt that hard! It just takes the right method for the right person! The literal easiest method for yellow is Lamenters Yellow over white base/primer in 2-3 coats. All you have to do before that is pick out details in sepia and again once youre done with the yellow. Only downside is its rather time consuming since you have to wait for the glaze to dry properly. grand_master85
@Tyrannicide. The only thig I airbrushes was the basecoat over a white undercoat. grand_master85
@Slipstreams your boundless enthusiasm for the Fists has been very inspiring ;) Im not sure where I'm going with them. Id like enough to have a regular force, but then also enough to adapt and have Sogismund and his Templars or Polux and a Breacher force. I've got 40 Tacticalarines and the IF command so far. Next week will be another 5 Templars to the 5 I have already kitbashed Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303660-hearts-of-stone-will-of-iron-an-imperial-fists-wip-blog/#findComment-3955597 Share on other sites

ThatOneMarshal
I know I sound like a broken record whenever I check out peoples wip buuuuut OOOOH MY GOD those are beautiful!!! One of the reasons I have been holding off on the fists is because of their color scheme, it's not Getty enough for me and the paint is a pain in the ass. Be happy sir because fists are now a strong contender for the army I'm playing next. :) Also airbrush huh. I guess brother honda was right I need an airbrush it seems to have things go faster. YOU HEAR THAT HONDA YOUR RIGHT!!!! Now please don't tell him that now.:) Is airbrushing hard? Also because I'm tired what is the paint scheme you used? I will store it in case I do fists. grand_master85
Haha, blimey, thanks for the compliments :-D I was up till 3am painting a mk II dude. I'm currently working on a Despoiler, so I'll add them up shortly. Yeah I was really petrified about using an airbrush, but use a couple of test minis to get a feel for it and it's a very easy thing to use. Can be a bit delicate so you need to be patient and not oversp[ray your paint. I literally used it for the basecoat only, just for that smooth start, and everything else was done by brush. My process was pretty much: Spray white undercoat Couple of coats of Tamiya Flat Yellow thinned down by airbrush Satin Varnish and a sepia wash Couple of thinned layers of Tamiya Flat Yellow, but only on the raised areas Paint all your blacks, metals, eye lenses Sponge chip some VMA Cam Black Brown, and add a few scratches here and there Gloss varnish and then use an enamel brown paint painted into the recesses. You can use a bit of paint thinner after on any area the enamel has spread to where you dont want it. Et voila! I need to add some weathering powder to their legs/feet, and I never really thought about tactical markings, Legion number either. Le sigh. Still,m I'm on a roll and, more importantly, really really enjoying painting this army, more than I have any other (I've wanted to do Fists for so long. It's just getting the yellow right) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303660-hearts-of-stone-will-of-iron-an-imperial-fists-wip-blog/#findComment-3956962 Share on other sites

grand_master85
Oh, it's nice to finally feel like you've found something that feels right to paint. Following on from my tester mini in the previous post, I've got the other 30-odd marines to paint out. They've all been satin varnished and sepia washed. Decided the best way to get minis painted is to paint them in batches of two. That way, I have to have fully painted stuff (weathering powder and basing aside), instead of my usual paint all the basecoats on al;l the minis, then the layers etc. I got to the point with my Salamanders where I'm at the highlight stage and I'm just not feeling it, so fingers crossed this approach works. Certainly enthusing seeing minis pretty much done! So, here's a couple of guys from the same squad. The mk III chap was going to be in my old Alpha lot, hence the scrubbed off iconography, but I've stripped all them and they will be going into what I had originally planned (and failed with a previous attempt at yellow). I posted on one of the facebook groups and some said my tester was a bit too over-weathered. So I clearly though 'stuff it' and decided to weather the next two even more! I think it's the Death Guard influence, I'm a bit of a fan of their totally unpolished look and I don't do too well with all the fancy blending and painting that some guys have the enviable ability to do. Anyhoo, I feel like I deserve a little treat so I'm going to do another mk IV dude and I'll likely do with him either the mk III Captain (from the mk III command set, unsheathing his sword), the Event only Iron Warrior guy (for my Fists) or the IF Captain from the IF Command set. I think the next couple I do will be a fair bit less chipped. I don't want them all looking the same, so some will be a bit more chipped, some will look almost production line new (but not many) and a few will be somewhere in the middle. I'm gonna try out some streaks and a bit of grime next. I digress, here's the three chaps so far. They're a touch more golden in colour than the photo suggests: http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpswqvpl1jr.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsaq9yir26.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps7v7a5iue.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsdgxrjfhi.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsjrvzuuan.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps90u1bp3p.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303660-hearts-of-stone-will-of-iron-an-imperial-fists-wip-blog/#findComment-3957260 Share on other sites
