Mors Indecepta - Hydra's 30k WIP's

So thought it would be best to keep my 30k WIPS here were there are people who understand the pain of choosing a Legion.

With the new Delegatus I thought it would be the perfect chance to try and build a small force, and sorting through my bits box I found some Night Lord stuff, so decided to go with a terror squad, volkite heavy, list. Reading the background for Skorr, the Alpha Legion Delegatus, I like the idea of a marine emissary, so thought I would run with that. My Delegatus and his bodyguard will be in ceremonial gear, and I wanted the delegation to carry an air of arrogance, they don't want a peaceful compliance, they want an excuse for war, and of course while they hold thier enemies attention, the rest of the Night a Lords infiltrate, ready to kill.

The Delegatus is int the middle, I know he can't take an iron halo but I wanted to help distinguish him from the bodyguard, and give an air of imperial authority, which is also why he has the Gladius on his hip, I thought it could be symbol of imperial power. Also, if the force gets larger he can upgrade to a Praetor, his rapier, which is hard to see, but it's the one from the WFB vampire Lord with one wing, could easily be a paragon blade. He needs a third bodyguard, just need to grab a SoH banner from somewhere.

Doh, just asked for some pics in the other thread and then found this -.- they look awesome. And tell me about the pain of choosing a legion. Night lords are looking appealing currently... :P

You nailed the cocky arrogance in the poses.

You're probably going to hate me for this, but as written, only characters can take Chainglaives, and Command Squads are only allowed to challenge as if they were characters.

It's a rules annoyance that a Sergeant can take one, but the protectors of the Primarch cannot.

Having said that, the models look absolutely amazing! The poses are awesome.

Unfortunate, but correct. Characters and Independent Characters only, and they must also have access to a power weapon in their listed options. If you want to blow 500 points on your command squad, you should be able to!

Thanks for the responce guys, the Delegatus does open up new doors in terms of building models, excited to see where I can take this.

On the whole Chainglave issue, asked the question yesterday - http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303776-quick-question/

The command squad is more for show, and if they are used in a game they can be heavy chainswords, being big two handed chainswords. I really wanted a pole weapon as I see them as perfect bodyguard weapons. Perhaps these are Teran Chainglaves, cos you know, if you buy chainglave, you should buy Nostraman.

Ok Night Lord Painting time. Starting with a Terror Squad Headsmen with power fist, not my most inspired pose so may get redone.

I'm not sure on the colour, I'm thinking I may go darker, almost black with a blue highlight, but I wanted to try and blend like a stormy sky, although the effects lost due to the highlight. Oh well, I did learn that less is more with the lightening which I think looks ok-ish. The continuos effect down the body was unintentional, but I think it works. The skull helm came out quite nice, though I think it's more Ork then human. I think I'm going to have to fill the grills on normal Mark III helms. Not sure on the brass, I've seen a few Night Lords in brass and liked it, not sure if I can get the same effect.

There's dried blood on the power fist but the armour is to dark to show it off. More lightening to. Not liking how the legion symbol came out. Some tempted to go the Crimson Son route on that, red pad, black symbol.

And a shaky shot of the other pad. I wasn't sure what tactical markings a terror squad would have so I went with lightening. Also note the Volkite, I feel it's a bit bland, but I went with a greenish glow which I copied off forge world. Verdigris doesn't really work with the light blue highlights.

So thoughts?

Well moving on from Brutus, who know needs a knife.

Another Terror Headsmen, this one I'm hoping is more stealthy then Brutus.

And I really hoping that Volkite makes people go all fiery because....

If you can't tell, half his body missing and there is a little bit of fire, like his body is burning away.

I've just take a quick look at this thread and I must say, the quality of your painting and modelling is amazing! (You've made me reconsider the NL as a choice for my future army)

The Mkiii works well as its a nice change from the traditional Mkiv Forgeworld Nightlords all tend to use.

Definitely a 10/10

He's made me reconsider the Night Lords too -.-

Someone noticed my "volkite death" night lords edition army list :P

Good lookin though. Not gonna lie, I was really considering doing the same idea for the fluff for such an army. Still probably will. Let me know how well they play!

On a modeling note:

They look great!! Though I'm not sure where you are going with the headsman helmet...

-the boater

Thanks guys, have another few WIPS that I will hopefully have posted up by the end of the day.

Mortis, we will have to arrange a game someday, would love to see your Iron a Warriors in person.

Operative, I'm humbled by your kind words

Fire Golem, do it, join us in the VIIIth

Dantioch, thanks mate, the skull was easier to do then I thought.

Boater, it was your list I'm starting with, although I'm going to throw in a Contemptor as well as the apothecaries and 3 man command squad just because! The Headsmen helm has had the grills filled in so I can paint terror markings on to it.

I've been thinking on the background. So I have decided that the Delegatus/Praetor fills a sort of ambassador role in the Legion. Now any captain can be chosen to do this but one of the things I like about the Legions is that they have these specialist roles as the Legions were then just the rapid responce military forces that the 40kchapters are. The force will be a mixture of Terran and other (the Night Lords recruited from conquered worlds) with a small cadre of Nostorman's filtering in, but I imagine they have begun to take on the Nostroman culture, hence the Delegatus wearing a terror helm, which would have replaced the imperial style of a plumed helm. Head taking was common (and not just in the VIII legion) before being reunited with the Primarch, but now they are starting to become more twisted, flaying skin, taking hands (see the Headsmen above) and other trophies, but they are not full on sadists yet.

Of course with the Night Lords an important feature is how they see thier Farther. I'm going with my own thoughts on Kurze

'He is insane, a feral king who is more animal then man, but you can not deny, he is glorious to watch. Long live the Night Haunter.'
