richmarine
I've decided to post my sons of Horus that I completed as a challenge last year for the independent characters podcast. Let me know what you guys think. I also have a lot of WIP photos so let me know if you would like to see them. I need games with these guys so give me a shout if you live in the West Midlands and would like a game. SoH 1st tactical by richmarine84, on Flickr 1st tactical squad. Used a mix of mk2 and 4. Didn't like the look of mk3. That's now changed. They've all got close combat weapons in addition to the bolt guns. Either by using the chainblade attachment on the bolt gun or round the waist and the blades that came with the other bolt guns. I didn't buy the bolt pistol/grenade forge world stuff because the current marine extras would do.
Dosjetka
They're gorgeous *q* Would you mind sharing how you painted that green? And the gold/brass? Also, do you plan to add more models to this project?

richmarine
They're gorgeous *q* Would you mind sharing how you painted that green? And the gold/brass? Also, do you plan to add more models to this project? The 1st tactical squad is part of a 2.5k force which is finished. Thought I'd post a bit at a time. The green was really difficult. Trawled through many tutorials all to avoid the forgeworld guide. My local GW recommend bolt gun metal with a green wash. Which is crap. Next was a grey with a green wash which again looked messy. Next was a few versions of Vallejo USMC tank crew colour. Did 3 test minis of different mixes of that colour plus a highlight. See below Untitled by richmarine84, on Flickr I settled on the forge world paint scheme which is in their download section. It uses 4 paints with a green wash. I've used this with a varying number of green washes to represent how fallen a particular unit has fallen. So on the reavers I've used about 3 layers of green washes and one on the squad I've posted. by richmarine84, on Flickr Gold is done just using GWs foundation gold and then a purple wash with a gold layer and then a mix of gold and silver for a highlight. Brass scorpion is used with a brown wash instead and rune lord brass as a highlight. I use gold on leaders only with brass for rank and file. richmarine
2nd tactical squad. All Mk4. I've added a lot of the cathonian gang symbols to represent more of the cathonia stock coming through the ranks. The 1st having more from terra. I wanted the squad to be halfway between reavers and terrans. richmarine
Cataphractii terminators up next. I bought the special weapon pack as well as the power fist pack. More than enough to outfit 10 terminators. But only 2 combi weapon housings with 2x4 options. Went with 2 fists, lightning claws, power sword and mace. A plasma blaster, and 2 combi weapons (Melta/plasma). The bit on top of the srg is a grenade pack which also fits under a combi bolter. richmarine
Thanks for the comments. Next up are a few snap shots of 1000 points. I used them in a game last year against some thousand sons. The Contemptor was the star of the show destroying a proteus land raider. However the army was really slow so I added some transports to my 1000 points. I agree. Knocked it back twice from the original which was very loud. The fear has taken hold though so I've left it as pictured.

richmarine
Next up; volkite tactical support. Noticed in my 1000 point game that my lack of long range firepower and complete lack of ability to kill something with an AV value I decided the go with a volkite squad. I figured that with enough strength 6 shots I could take out light to medium armour and support my advance with some long range firepower. And they look cool. Finished for challenge. by richmarine84, on Flickr Tactical volkite cavalier squad by richmarine84, on Flickr Tactical volkite cavalier squad by richmarine84, on Flickr

richmarine
Amazing SoH, particularly love Horus + the Hammer Cap'n. How'd you managed that marble effect? Its great. Funnily enough a lot of people ask me that. Best answer is first to have a picture of marble in front of you and try to copy it on a sample. That should give you an idea of how to paint it in theory then try to put it to practice. I tried to paint a random pattern of a mid tone colour on a light basecoat then edge only one side of your random patches with a dark tone of the same colour. Make sure though that the line is jaged like lightning. Then apply at random angles but try not to over do it. Then wash and dry brush to get as you would normally for rocks. Another tip would be to not have any sharp detail described previously on broken sections. I can safely say after many years ago when I trod on my moms brand new fireplace surround that the inside of marble does not look like a finished surface. Went to trouble of painting the inside. Which is now only visible via these pictures. Rear ramp I accidently varnished shut. Pics below. Next up. Storm eagle. Had "fun" building this.
