++ March of the Legions: XVI Legion ++

Recommended Posts

Here's where I am so far, I'd really appreciate some C&C on the colour I've gone for but if this isn't the place for it let me know and I'll move it over to my WIP blog, BCK.

Cheers Recon, I have used an airbrush and to get to where I am now colour-wise it's:

•Vallejo grey surface primer

•Vallejo jade green as the base coat.

•Vallejo Jade green and stonewall grey in a 1:2 ratio.

•A wash of GW nuln-oil/abaddon black/lahmium medium/water

•Another blast of Vallejo Jade green and stonewall grey in a 1:2 ratio.

•After those steps I applied a highlight by brush of the last stage but in a ratio of 1:4.

I was a bit concerned that it's too green, but I'm starting to like it and may stick with it...

An halfway Done with my entry, but photobucket is Messing around, so i can't show any Pics at the moment.

Have a few questions regarding what Colours i should choose for the eyes, Sword and cape.

I based my model on sicarius, with a mk.2 helmet, command squad champion Sword and mk.2 plasma pistol.

Fluff;

The subject of this series of pict-caps has been definitively identified as Juqal Dort, a legionary of approximately 90 years’ service by the outbreak of the heresy. He was a member of Aghnoron, a veteran squad of the XVIth Company, and it is known that the company that shared the number of the Legion was regarded as particularly inauspicious by the rest of the Legion. Additionally, it is certain that Dort and his squad were present and active during the Grandian campaign. There the certainty ends, as information regarding the fighting, particularly on Grandia IV, is scarce and for the most part unreliable. It is frequently asserted by both Imperial and traitor forces that members of the XVIth were seen fighting for and against the forces of the Warmaster during the campaign, and indeed were cited as having been present on both sides in at least three major engagements, although none of these reports were verifiable.

Garbed in the black armour increasingly favoured by Reaver and veteran units in the XVIth Legion after its rebirth as the Sons of Horus, Dort’s hybrid suit carries both the deep green of his Legion and the red of veterancy upon his pauldrons. The stylised Eye of Horus on his knee plate indicates his elevated position within the non-military, informal hierarchy of his company. The significance, if any, of his scarlet gauntlets is unknown. He carries an unusually-fashioned plasma weapon, fulfilling his assigned role as special weapon operator for his squad. It is believed that many members of the XVIth Company escaped the Grandian conflict and were present at the Siege of Terra, presumably still in the service of the Warmaster, only to meet an ominous fate at the resolution of that climactic battle, whether Dort was amongst them is a fact lost to history.

Reckoned it was about time I actually posted a Son of Horus on these boards...been spending far too much time with the Guardsmen!

Tempted to paint half my army black instead of green now...

Caal Zroth, Captain of the 9th Company of the Luna Wolves. Pict shows Caal wearing an early example of Mark IV armour. Zroth was killed during the pacification of the Xenos 354-21. Interment into a Lucifer class dreadnought sarcophagus, unfortunately it did not succeed.

I, the Nameless Captain, accept my role in this.

I promise to lead the XVI Legion into the zone of war, and conduct them to glory.

I will do so no matter the ferocity or ingenuity of the foe.

I pledge my honor to the XVI Legion.

On this matter, and by the Legion, I swear.

I remember listening to the old fables and tales as a child.

med_gallery_77689_10133_1186670.jpg

I always rooted for the wolf in those stories.

med_gallery_77689_10133_148399.jpg

Except in the tale of the little girl and her red hood.

I rooted for the woodsman in that story.

I mean, he performed surgery on the wolf with an axe.

And he also killed it.

It would take quite a wolf to top that.

What? Am I referring to the animal or to the legions?

The animal, though, Hm....

I'll have to think about that.

“This will be a short campaign.” Thought Ilthus Bralow. To be sure, the Selenar and their gene-wrought hulks were putting up a decent fight, but they were completely unprepared for this. Never mind the surprise assault, the Legiones Astartes were something new on the battlefield, and that could be just as dangerous as all their skill and lethal ability.

Bralow and his group had just come across a particularly nasty beast blocking their path to the defense systems control. Armor plated, with four independently moving eyes, each guiding a set of razored tentacles.

“Kulth, get over here with your breachers and take care of that blast door. We'll take care of this thing.”

“Acknowledged.”

“ Vess, Jiom, Tarse, keep the tentacles busy.”

“Yes.”

*nod*

“GRAAA!”

“ Qruze, you and I go for the head.”

They fanned out; Vess and Tarse started hacking away, Vess with his twin falcatas, Tarse with his halberd; apothecary Jiom used his sword to ward off blows while firing near continuous beam of thermal energy from his volkite charger. A tentacle lashed out, severing Tarse’s left arm. He stopped yelling and stopped dead in his tracks. He glanced down at the missing limb as a tentacle, the creature not expecting him to cease all movement, swept through the air just in front of him. He then looked back up and continued charging at the creature.

Qruze and Bralow, fending off the few tentacles not occupied with the other three, ran at the head. In the distance they heard Tarse yell “I’M COMING FOR YOURS NOW!” Qruze stabbed one of the thing’s eyes, and as it roared in pain Bralow through a couple of frag grenades down its throat. After a short delay, the thing died and Tarse removed the creature’s left forlimb.

One obstacle dealt with, they moved down to take care of rest of the defenders. One of Selenar officers was yelling “do not let these wolves come any further!”

“Farther” muttered Jiom.

Wolves, huh.” Thought Bralow, “nice.

He turned to the breachers “Hey, Kluth. Toss me a breaching charge.”

“That is not the kind of thing you want to toss around in a situation like this.”

“So, hand it to me then.”

“Fine.”

Bralow took the charge and ran with his squad at the increasingly depleted enemy line. Vaulting over the barricade, he found himself standing in front of the blast door. As the rest of his men mopped up the last of the Selenar forces on this side of the doors, he thought, “we probably won’t be here much longer” he smiled, “might as well have one last bit of fun before we go”. He hefted the breaching charge saying, “little pigs, little pigs, let me in.”

I want to say something more, but I can't think of anything. Ah well, on to the XV!

Gods and Monsters - Prologue

The banner flapped in the wind, and the sight of it gave him pause. The Eye, the great symbol of the Warmaster's rule flitted to and fro, as if to catch each and every detail of the battle unfolding before it, to savour the bloodshed and ferocity of his sons at war. Maloghurst smiled as best as his ruined face would allow. Those men that fought under him knew his position in the Warmaster's court and would fight with all their pride and strength, as though the Primarch himself was watching over them.

Maloghurst himself was less pleased to be here...

Arrigata was a bleak, frozen world under the auspices of Guilliman's empire in the Galactic East. To the naked eye, it held no value beyond its component minerals and resources. From the defence they were putting up, their people weren't of much worth either. Erebus though had spoken of something different. The so-called 'Apostle' had told Horus of Arrigata's hidden bounty, a treasure of the ancient ones which he and the Lodge Master Targost had been sent to retrieve. Maloghurst had resented being ordered away. He hadn't left the Warmaster's side since Isstvan V, and Erebus' sudden arrival on the Vengeful Spirit had seemed very much to be another chance for the Word Bearer to insinuate himself into Horus' inner circle once again.

He knew that success here would reward Erebus as well as Targost and himself, but a victory achieved quickly would remind Lorgar's Apostle of his place. Maloghurst was patient enough to wait for Erebus to overextend himself once more.

The snow began to fall again and Maloghurst turned his attention to the battle once more. The mortal army's fortress would be breached before the XIII would have the chance to reinforce it. Good. He hefted the banner high and marched forward, surrounded by his Justaerin guard. The Warmaster's will be done.

Urgh... Maloghurst is done! This one was a bit of a stretch, though I'm really happy with the way the green's turned out. The freehand on the banner didn't go exactly according to plan, but believe it or not it's the most ambitious freehand I've ever attempted, and it's recognisable at least as the famous eye, so it'll do until Forgeworld release a proper version of Mal. I may well revisit him at some point, but for now, good enough!

And yes, at some point I will be doing an Ultramarines/Sons of Horus plog. But not for a while yet...

Praetor Kenath truly believed in bringing the light of the Emperor the the galaxy, winning many victories in the name of his primarch and Emperor during the Great Crusade. Due to it being uncertain where his loyalties lied, he was with the Loyalists on Istvaan III. He was slain by the initial assault of the World Eaters, slaying many before being overwhelmed.
