Upon opening my orders and my FW armour marks I realised something, the FW Astartes come with 28mm bases and I was going to have my Astral Claws on 32mm bases wallbash.gif looks like I need to order 3 more packs of 32mm bases then..... *sigh* I wish I wasn't so dumb sometimes....

Two more down for the count.

Another retaliator and finally a corpse taker! Ever since learning about the Tyrant's sinister apothecaries I have always wanted one but each time I started another incarnation of my Astral Claws I fizzed out before making one. Now I finally have one that I hope, especially when painted, will look menacing.

I may go back and take a xacto knife to the searchlight and scanner on his back to turn them in the direction he is looking. Also, I am looking to buy the bits to make his two servitors that will accompany him on his excursions.

All that left now is to build another retaliator and their Strike Leader, Perceval. Following by adding bits to the bases and painting. I hope it stops being humid when it comes time to base.

Great updates folks!

@Peredyne, what head did you use for the corpse-taker? I cannot tell but it looks like either an HH Iron Warrior one or possibly the skull one from the HH Night Lords.

It is from the HH Iron Warriors kit. It's suitably sinister looking and really changes the overall attitude of the miniature.

I like it. It does carry a grim look.

After a couple weeks break I'm back guys! The progress here is amazing, everything gets better every time.

For now I would like to pledge 8 Honor guard with chapter banner, as well as an Ironclad Dreadnought

Incomplete models for the sharks are a Terminator Squad I forgot to remove from the cabinet, a Tactical Squad, a Fire Raptor and a Stormtalon. Unfortunately the sharks are on the backburner while I attempt to get all the Exorcists out of the way. I already have enough half finished projects..

I have a month to finish all this stuff before I leave my models here, wish me luck guys!

I posted this up last night but it seems it was wiped with the system failure on B&C.

Here are 2 Minotaurs tac squads on the way. They are taking a little longer than expected because metal shading isn't all that much easier to do than regular color shading. Iv put in about 40 hours into them already and there is probably another 20 to go before they are finished. All in all, I'm very happy with the results so far.

raeho, you'll be getting a bill for my dental surgery. I saw that display cabinet and my jaw dropped hard.

Well, it seems my post from yesterday got wiped so I'll post again smile.png

First off, thanks for the words of encouragement! I am very pleased with my corpse-taker. It is terrific to see a lot of great minis being worked on! I also remember there were two other posts up here that also got deleted. They dealt with my Corpse-Taker's helm which came from the Chaos Warpsmith kit. Just want to throw that back out there for the curios readers.

Excellent Corpse-Taker, Hushrong! I like the difference between yours and mine! What are you going to do for the Dissection Servitors?

Thanks bud! I am working on the background fluff of my current Astral Claws and lets just say he started his gene-seed collecting after a distinguishing career in a Cohort. Thus his use of a boltgun and attitude.

I really do not like the existing servitors to the point that I would never field them. However, along came a gift from Mars! For my servitors I want to use these guys. I will be getting these and ordering some bits in the hope to make them look less homicidal and more medically inclined.

Plus, I would not want to be the guy going out onto the battlefield to collect gene-seed depending on slow moving, lobotomized automatons to help me out. I would want something that could keep up and put up a fight. Fluff wise I like to think it'd be cool to have these running around like Gazelle from Kingsman hacking up the apothecaries enemies, distracting them as he guns them down.

m0nolith, that bronze looks fantastic! <3 Would you kindly share your recipe? biggrin.png

Its not exactly my recipe, just a modification of the Tartan guide you can find here : http://www.tartanpaint.info/2012/07/20/minotaurs-space-marine-painting-guide/#.VWpHDUYvyjB

Basically:

Primer - Black

1 - 80% Dwarf Bronze, 20% Warplock Bronze mix

2 - heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade

3- Layer, 80% Hashut Copper, 20% Warplock Bronze mix again

4- Layer, 90% Hashut Copper, 10% Warplock Bronze mix

5- 100% Hashut Copper

6- Highlight, 50% Hashut Copper, 50% Runefang Steel

Thanks for the acknowledgement :) they look great. Glad my recipe helped you

I loved doing a few Minotaurs but ended up going back to painting my space wolves hehe

Well its a hell of a guide, and I have to thank you for making it biggrin.png

I spent a good chunk of time looking through different guides on how to paint Minotaurs, and yours was definitely the best.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's the conversions that make this project exciting for me. Not only seeing other's conversions, but building my own. To give myself a break from my Astral Claws, I decided to throw together a Malakim Phoros and an Honour Guard to accompany him.

This thread was really flowing at first and it seems to have trickled off, so I am going to add in a non-photo update. I have my Retaliator squad, my Mk V Heresy Tactical Squad and my Captain all primered and base coated. This was my first time using my airbrush for primering and basecoating and it was definitely a learning experience.

The most important thing I learned is start with paints formulated for airbrushing. The pigments in airbrush paints are actually finer than in regular paints. I started with Vallejo Black surface primer and it airbrushed on like a dream with a small amount of flow aid mixed into it. My first base coat was a batch of a color mixed up that is referred to as Astral Claws Silver. It's VGC Gunmetal mixed with a small amount of VGC Black and thinned with a significant amount of flow aid. Just enough to darken the gunmetal. This stuff was a fight to get to flow through the airbrush properly, but I persevered and finished the basecoat. After that, I did Zenithal highlighting with VGA Chainmail thinned with flow aid and a final highlight of VGA silver thinned the same way sprayed almost straight above the models. The VGA paints sprayed without any issue. I will continue to use the airbrush for primering and basecoating as learn more about how to manipulate the brush and the formulas for mixing the paints.

I also started a side project for Badab - a small allied force of Lamenters led by Malakim Phoros. I have built Phoros and his Command Squad and I have basecoated Phoros with Army Painter Daemonic Yellow spray. For the record, I know the AP's are formulated as primers, but I have discovered that a thin layer of Krylon sandable white primer actually helps brighten the color and uses less of the AP to cover properly. That's really key to avoid clogging details with the AP spraypaints. This little side project actually got my Fiancee's attention because Yellow is one of her favorite colors and this guy is really popping. That's actually a huge change in my projects.

I am going to up my vow and throw in a captain with teeth of terra and grav pistol

Because I spent all day painting orange and currently the man that lives in my ear is demanding I either paint grey familiar spacemarines or set fire to my eyes

I like my eyes
