Looking for advice on building a Thousand Sons Legion Army?

Recommended Posts

A few months ago I played a Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons army using the Grey Knight codex but I haven't touched them since the codex was re-released, but with the plastics coming out and rumors of set of rules for the 15th legion and others who haven't been covered so far I'm now interested to see what my army could look like using the Crusade List?

My collection for the army at the moment is two contemptors, 5 terminators and 10 marines plus a character so there is a lot of room for new stuff. So here are my question for you Horus Heresy veterans...

  1. How does the army list compare to that of the Marine codex?
  2. What suggestions can you make for an interesting army list? My other army is guard so I'd like to avoid getting too vehicle heavy.
  3. How can I give the army that 15th Legion feel, at least till the rules and units come out?

1) totally different beast. This is the great crusade, emphasis on great. Units tend to have a points tax on them that encourages taking big units as to not pay it multiple times. Each squad has a purpose and they are not as versatile as normal Marines, further emphasised by the rites of war (basically a special way of organising your army for bonuses).

2) really, there's so many options it's up to you! I'd have a good read of the rules and decide what you like.

3) this is a hard one, other than Librarian consuls there isn't really anything that screams "15th" yet. There is a reason they are the last Legion to be made, the rules are the hardest to create and balance and stay faithful to the fluff. One option you could go with is use the word Bearer rules for now with thier possessed being warp enchanced/ charged Marines, thier multiple psyker characters and using Lorgar transfigured as Magnus, he's level 3, chooses his powers instead of rolling and casts on a 3+.

Hope that helps :)

As far as getting the feel right, I'd look at the various pieces of artwork that are floating about on the internet. Less-pronounced headcrests, lighter shades of gold, plenty of Egyptian motifs, scarabs and the like.

To be honest, I'd just wait until the upgrades are released on that count. Rules are still a ways off if the last Open Day is anything to go by.

Best advice I'd offer is don't even think about the rules yet. They could be in the next volume or a ways off so don't even factor them in if you want to get a head start. But above all remember that the XV were still a Legion. Regardless of their proclivities with psychic warfare or a relatively smaller size in comparison, they're still Legion and the basis of all the Legions in the Great Crusade were massed ranks of Tactical Squads complemented significantly with support units and more specialised formations, especially armour. Whatever the RoW, characters, Legiones Astartes trait, you'll still have the vast majority of units taken from the Crusade Army List.

As for how the army plays in relation to 40k dexes, don't even try to stand them side by side. It's a completely different mindset, notably due to 1750-1800 pts being the be bare minimum you should be looking to include unless you're using the alternative FoCs found in Extermination or Conquest. One thing I would say though, don't write off taking a few tanks. FW do a hell of a better job than GW in getting cracking models out.

With collecting, I'd hold off on any "conversion" pieces for the next month or two. With FW pushing the WS/BA/DA upgrade kits out it's not impossible the VI/XV Legions will get theirs as well

Ironically, I was about to open a thread on the same thing just recently. I've got a cool idea for my praetor (either named Ptolemeus or Archameus) and an idea for an air cav centered force...

...but I'm hesitating because of how they should look and what rules they'll get.

Right now, with a basic Crusade army list, here are the units I would lean towards for the XVth.

Librarian: This one is obvious.

Terminators: These could represent the Scarab Occult.

Recon Marines: The Thousand Sons have their Hidden Ones, which we don't know much about but I believe are supposed to be special scouts and spies.

Other than that, any standard legion units would be appropriate.

I've decided to hold back on doing a Horus Heresy List till the actual Thousand Sons list comes out, as it has been pointed out that there isn't really a way to properly theme the list to suit the 15th legion.

So I've decided to consider another route and I'd like some help for this as well. Basically I want to use the Space Marine codex to create the army with the following requirements...

Librarian Formation - 3-5 kicking around the army,
Master Of The Forge - So I can field several HH Vehicles using their 40k rules,
2 Contemptors - Cause I have the models, thou I'd like suggestion on what to arm them with?
2-3 Horus Heresy Vehicles - What two vehicles would you recommend?

I've started a thread here in the Space Marine army list section if anyone would like to help me build a list there?
