“I saw countless worlds drown in seas of blood that stretched across the galaxy. I smelled the stench of death as bloated corpses were cast into heaping piles of pox and disease. I heard a cacophony of pleasure and agony as an entire planet gave into debauchery. I experienced things I can’t explain that warped reality itself. I gazed upon the agents of oblivion, and I felt my very soul tremble.”

Introduction:

Hello, Warhammer 40k enthusiasts, Chaos Cultists, and Ordo Malleus scholars and welcome to my Daemons of Chaos blog. My name is quite impossible for mortal minds to comprehend, but you can call me Darth Bob or Shane. Now, some of you who have been on DakkaDakka may have seen my Alpha Legion blog, and may recall that I had spoken about how over the years I have had a severe case of Army ADD. I have jumped around constantly between different armies, and after many years I have finally settled down with the forces of Alpharius.

However, from the very beginning it had been my intention to delve into other aspects of that faction, being the many allies and auxiliaries that the Alpha Legion employs. Whether it be the humans that call the Legion their allies, the Mechanicum traitors that aid their cause, or the Daemons that the Legion calls upon to serve them, I knew that the Alpha Legion presented an opportunity to sate some of the tendencies I have to jump around between armies; by doing a variety of "different" armies that are interconnected, at least to some degree. As time went on, I realized that one particular part of these "interconnected forces" stood more separate from the others; the Daemons of Chaos. The allure of Chaos has been with me from the very beginning. Although there was a brief time when the Hive Mind stole my heart, Chaos has always been a part of my 40k hobby career. It was only a matter of time before the Eye stared back upon me, and although my true heart lies with the sons of Alpharius, I will answer the call in spirit. Therefore, I've decided that rather than lumping the Daemons into my Alpha Legion thread (which I will likely post on here sometime in the future, but until that happens you can find it on Dakka!) I'll just give them their own thread. Mostly because I wanted to give them their own thread for my own organizational sanity, but also because I wanted to showcase the neat banners that my girlfriend graciously made for me.

I will be using this first page as a reference point for you, the reader, so that I may gather all my thoughts into a condensed and easy-to-access summary. This blog will contain personalized fluff for my army, tutorials, WIP and completed models, as well as the occasional blurb or rant about what goes on through my head (scary, I know). As a preface for the contents of this blog, allow me to address each section in more detail:

Background:

Of all the aspects of Warhammer 40k, the background material is perhaps the most important to me. If it wasn't for the plethora of interesting concepts, engaging lore, and interesting stories that saturate Warhammer 40k, I highly doubt I would have such a strong interest in this hobby. It's one of the core reasons that I've never really been interested in other miniature wargaming systems. One thing, however, that I love more than the official Warhammer 40k fluff, is the ability to make your own. I firmly believe in the importance of narrative, being a frequent practitioner of various RPG systems, and this has lead me to include more-or-less in-depth background stories for my armies. The Warhammer 40k universe is so big, that as long as it doesn't conflict egregiously with the established material, anything is possible!

With that said, it is important to understand that I have a very particular view of how the 40k background "works". I view the sorted background of Warhammer to be told from the perspective of Imperial archivists and historians, as well as other heretical and xenos sources, telling the stories and legends of over 40,000 years of galactic history. Of course, as with the many different historical accounts in the real world, there are discrepancies and differences. I see the many "retcons" and "contradictions" in the officially-provided 40k fluff to be different historical perspectives rather than strict retcons or contradictions. Think about it, the Horus Heresy happened over ten thousand years ago. Surely there must be some discrepancies between what is said to have happened and what actually happened. Maybe the Necrons were once viewed as soulless, life-harvesting automatons by Imperial scholars, but as time went on, the true nature of their existence in the universe was better realized and identified.

The 40k universe is so grand and wonderful that it leaves it to you to decide what you want to believe really happened; to pick and choose parts of the fluff that you agree and don't agree with, just like any ancient historian would do. That being said, I would like it to be known that a lot of the fluff that will be in this thread is my own fabrication, and I don't want to upset anyone by "making stuff up". Of course, all that you see will be based and founded heavily on the established material, but I really want to bring my vision of the Warhammer 40k universe to this thread, both in the models and the background. To me, they're both equally important.

Specifically regarding Chaos Daemons, I've become more and more troubled with the direction that Games Workshop has been taking them in recent years. For me, they're supposed to be this unknowable eldritch horror from beyond our mortal realm; some horrible crossing of Judeo-Christian mythology and Lovecraftian themes that come together to make something unique and horrifying even in the context of a setting as dark as 40k. I think GW has lost sight of that with their attempts to quantify and calculate every aspect of their Daemons, and they've started to come off as just another villain in 40k, rather than this great elemental evil that threatens all of reality. I want to bring Daemons back to a mythical evil that bends the very fabric of mortal comprehension. I want them to be dark, gritty, and scary, as Daemons and their ilk should be. That's the guiding principle I have with regards to the direction I want to take in the background section of this topic, as well as the direction of the models themselves.

Painting and Modeling:

Gosh, this guy sure does talk a lot about non-hobby stuff in his hobby thread, doesn't he? Yes, well let me talk about that. The general thing to keep in mind with this army is that I'm going to take my time on this project. I want it to be clear that there is no set goal for this army, and it isn't meant to have any sort of deadline. I'm not building this to fit any sort of quota or army list, and this is an ongoing project that I plan to handle with the greatest of care and passion.

If that means spending hours upon hours converting a single, 15 point model then so be it! I want this army to showcase what I am capable of. Not to sound snotty, but I want to inspire people and provide ideas that might help them in all of their tabletop gaming adventures. Second, this army isn't particularly guided by the Chaos Daemons Codex. I've never been a huge fan of the Warhammer 40k game itself, and I don't like how the Codices and their various options stifle the many options for creativity that a hobbyist may delve into. There may be things in this thread that don't really serve a purpose game-wise, but I'm not building this army for "gaming". I'm building it because I love the hobby and I love the background; any gaming is just a bonus!

Finally, I want the work I put into each model to represent my commitment to this army. I have jumped around with armies so often that I almost feel bad about abandoning projects. I don’t want to abandon this. I want this to be something that I can be proud of. So without further ado, follow me into the Eye of Terror, to see the horrors from beyond our dreams:

Below, you will find an assortment of background information to help you better understand my ideas and views on the various powers of Chaos. They are broken up into sections that will go into the specifics of the varied forces of the Empyrean. The first section outlines Khorne and the many bloodthirsty Daemons that serve him. The second section is dedicated to Nurgle, the god of pestilence, despair, and the inevitability of death. The third section deals with Slaanesh, the sinful god of pleasure, pain, and excess in all things. The fourth section delves into the mysteries of Tzeentch, the unknowable god of magic, change, and fate. The fifth and final section will deal with the forces of Chaos Undivided; the countless lesser Chaos Gods, their minions, and the other unnamed horrors of the Warp.*

*Keep in mind that much of the development of this background information is subject to change and is as much part of the army's development as the models.

So, the first entry into this blog is a WIP of my Lord of Change. With this guy, I wanted to take a big departure from the giant bird look; not that there's anything wrong with that look. Tzeentch, of all the Chaos Gods, is certainly the most in-tune with Lovecraftian themes, and so I tried to capture that quite literally through this model by having his aesthetic be heavily inspired by the Crawling Chaos himself, Nyarlathotep. He's still heavy WIP, but the idea is that he's tearing a hole through reality and into the Warp, and the unknowable horrors of the Empyrean are beginning to pour out. I'll be modelling the warp rift coming up through a city sidewalk/pathway, so there will be bits of rubble and tiling cracking upwards along the walls of the rift, and I want to try to do some OSL on the portal itself, which will be my first attempt at such a painting technique.

I've really tried to go all-out on the sculpting on this guy, and I'm especially happy with how the right shoulder has come out. I tried to portray a Horror of Tzeentch literally forming from his shoulder and its mouth is starting to engulf what I could only imagine to be his "neck". I think it turned out quite nicely. I'm still trying to think of ideas of what to do on the other shoulder, so any ideas are welcome. Enjoy!

As for other stuff waiting in the wings, I've got twenty of the old 4th edition metal Horrors with ten more on the way, the Forge World Keeper of Secrets, a metal Be'lakor shipping to me from eBay, and some neat models from Creature Caster and Mierce Miniatures Kickstarters that will hopefully be arriving before I die of old age. Anyways, that's all for today! Hopefully this post wasn't overwhelming and pretentious, but I really hope you guys enjoy the blog.

May the Chaos Gods bless you and watch over you, until you have served your purpose.

Your daemon looks great so far :)

no problem with using a different look - after all, the daemons we got for the tabletop so far are just the widespread seen/known - there are myriad of other daemons^^

did you used Gulavhar from LoTR as base? would love to know his size next to other daemons^^

Thanks a lot! Yes, it is indeed Gulavhar from the LotR line. He's a great model that I originally bought for a Vampire Counts army I had planned that fell through. So I decided I'd put him to good use. As for size, I'd say he's about the height of a metal Bloodthirster without the pillar, maybe an inch or so higher with it. He's much lankier though, and the wings are really huge.

As for new stuff, I haven't really gotten much done. Been super busy at work and working on and off with my Alpha Legion. I'm still playing around with ideas for Nyarlathotep, as I'm still stumped for a proper solution to his left shoulder. Still open to suggestions! Otherwise, I managed to snatch this bad boy off eBay for an absolute steal! It's the Phoenix model from the new Kingdom Death Kickstarter. It's a really, really creepy model (as most Kingdom Death models are) that exudes that Tzeentchian feel. He's got hands and tendrils popping out all over his wings, as well as a bearded wizard head peering out of the giant bird beak. He's probably going to just be another Lord of Change model. By the end of it, I'm going to have a whole coven of them, haha!

Thanks everyone for all the support. It really means a lot. I'm a very passionate hobbyist but sometimes I find my motivation lacking. You guys' comments really help to keep me motivated to want to put out more stuff!

So quick update on the status of my Daemons. I received Be'Lakor from eBay, all shiny and new in his classic box. Can't wait to build him up, as he was one of my favorite models from back in the day. I also received the War Demon from my Mierce's Mighty Monsters Kickstarter, but unfortunately there's a massive mold slip on his right thigh. I'm trying to get into communication with Mierce at the moment to get it sorted, but I've heard they're pretty good at fixing stuff like this, so I'm not worried. Nyaruko-san is still in the same state as he was when the thread was started. I'm a bit stumped what I want to do with his other arm/shouolder. I might cut down the neck/shoulder detail and try to sculpt something else in its place, but who knows. I'm still open to ideas. The rest of the stuff remains unassembled. My room is in complete chaos (pun intended) and I find it hard to motivate myself to really put myself to task. Most of the stuff I've been getting done is done in the mancave of everyone's favorite resident Dark Apostle, RazakelXIII.

I do have something new for you guys today, though, and is the start of another big project that is representative of the glorious thing that is ideas-when-taking-showers.

I really wanted to do some non-traditional Daemons. As mentioned before, while I do love the traditional Daemonettes, Bloodletters, Plaguebearers, etc., I want to expand upon their patron's concepts and introduce some Daemons that no-one's ever seen before. I was taking a shower and for some reason, terror birds came to mind. For those who maybe don't know, terror birds were absolutely terrifying (go figure) giant birds of prey that roamed the earth millions of years ago (read: killer ostriches). I immediately thought: "Hey, terror birds would make for a pretty neat alternative to Flesh Hounds of Khorne. Instead, why not Terror Birds of Tzeentch?" After work that day, I immediately went scouring for terror bird models, and though there were very few, there was one among them that were absolutely perfect: the Death Kiwis from Warploque Miniatures.

So, here they are, the base models for what I have decided to call the Jabberwocks of Tzeentch.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx344/Funnyman2193/Jabber1_1_zps3g7qwgaj.jpg

They're pretty freaking cool models. The current plan is to get six more of the smaller ones (eventually) and model them all warped and odd. Tentacles, faces, gaping maws, heads split down the middle with weird warpstuff coming out; the works! Oh, and here's a quick scale shot next to an Alpha Legionary so you guys can see just how freaking big these guys are:

Alpharius is about to have a very bad day.

Anyways, that's all for today, guys. Would really appreciate some ideas for Nyar's other arm!

And so Darth Bob begins his secret infiltration of the B&C for the glory of the Alpha Legion. Joke's on you, Bob, we're all probably Alpharius here anyway. :) Welcome to the forum, buddy. I'm terrified of what you're doing with the Jabberwocks in the best way possible. Post more of 'em!

Got some work done on the Jabberwock Alpha yesterday when inspiration and motivation struck! I ended up using bits from the Chaos Spawn (which is better for bits than it is for the models themselves) and a little Trygon spiky claw. He's still far from done, but this should give you guys an idea of the direction I'm trying to go with these guys. Really strange and grotesque. Still bird-like, but suitably not. I'm calling this side pretty much done, but I've still got to do the entirety of the other side, and my plans for that will require a bits order. I also want to switch out one of the bird feet for something suitably odd; maybe a hoof or a gangly human foot?

Anyways, here he is so far:

Got a bit of work done on the closed-mouth Jabberwock. I tried to really make this guy's head look really mutated. The original plan was to have his head split down the middle with gross stuff in between the split, but after a nick to the finger (BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!) and a bunch of awkward cuts all over the model's face, I realized that wasn't going to work. So I kind of just went with the flow for this one, and the split-head idea turned into the "oh-god-my-neck-is-turning-into-a-big mouth" thing you see here. It might be hard to tell, but I actually sculpted a big ol' tongue hanging out of it.

As the sculpting went on, I kind of tried to make it look like the feathers around his neck were transforming into tentacles and those tentacle started evolving into different mutations as they traveled up towards his beak. The green stuff on the right side of his face is still drying, and it's not done just yet. I want the tentacles to cure so I can sculpt the rest of the face without worrying about messing them up like I did on the other side - *sigh*. I think I'm going to make this guy eyeless (well, at least eyeless where he should have eyes). Let me know what you guys think!

Those Jabberwocks are beautifully disturbing. Consider me on board.

Also, I have to admit, as a Slaanesh fan myself I can't wait to see what you create in honour of the Dark Prince(ss?).

Thanks for the reply and I'm glad you're on board for the Dark Gods and their wonderful horrors! I have a lot of really cool plans for Slaanesh. I've always been a firm believer that Slaanesh exemplifies the very primal theme of "sin" and I definitely want to use that theme in my Daemons. The Seven Deadly Sins and Dante's Divine Comedy are going to be a big driving force behind my creative process for Slaanesh. Unfortunately, I tend to have more plans than I do time or money! But hold tight! I do have that Forge World Keeper of Secrets waiting patiently in the wings. msn-wink.gif

Well, I got a bit of work done on the Jabberwock Alpha's left side. I had been patiently waiting for a big ol' bits order and among them were some plastic Pink Horror heads, so I immediately went to using them on the Jabberwock Alpha once they arrived. I decided a second head, forming out of tentacles that are morphing from his shoulder would be a good feature for the centerpiece of the squad. I tried a lot of variations; an eyeless head, a head with lots of eyes, a head with one bulging eye. Ultimately, though, I went for a "the tentacles are taking the shape of an eye" look, which I think fits. I like to think that the head is incredibly unstable, constantly shifting and changing, never able to quite take a solid shape. Perhaps it is evidence of Tzeentch's ever-fickle nature?

The Horror mouth on the thigh was a twofold experiment. First, the Horror mouth itself was an idea that was inspired by Guitarasmus' "The Strain" Possessed Space Marine conversions, and I think it worked out pretty well! The second part was trying my hand at making my own tentacle, which I also think was a rousing success. I based it on a paperclip, so it's nice and sturdy.

Anyways, enjoy!

This is just proof that I need to make some demons in the future, the amount of conversion possibilities is amazing. Love that thing.

BTW, the first mini you posted, where is that body from and how big is it compared to a space marine or guadsman? I think it would look great for a daemon prince.

The body is from Ghulhavar, the Terror of Arnor. It's a model from the Lord of the Rings range from Games Workshop. Really great model for conversions, though Finecast hasn't been kind to details like his face. Here's a size comparison next to one of my Alpha Legionaries:

Furthermore, the Nyarlord of Change is finally finished! After doing lots of trial and error trying to get the back and left shoulder details just right, I've finally gotten it to a point that I'm happy with it. All that remains now is to move on to the base and work on the portal a bit, as I'm not entirely happy with how the portal itself (not the stuff inside) turned out.

In other news, I've been getting the itch to work on some stuff from the other Chaos Gods. I received replacement legs for my Mierce Miniatures War Demon from the Mighty Monsters Kickstarter, so I might finally get to putting him together once I order an appropriately sized base from GW. He's pretty big, so I'll probably need a base that's knight-sized or bigger, if they make that. I might just keep trucking with the Tzeentch train and put my Horrors together, or finish the Jabberwocks, but I don't want to get too burnt out on my Tzeentch models. They're definitely the Daemons that need the most creative input, and without the motivation I just don't think they'll turn out the best they can.

I've got one other model on the way from the UK that's going to be a really interesting Slaaneshi project, that I'm really excited to introduce you guys to! But we'll see more of that once the model actually gets here. I've gotten the itch to do some fluff writing, so I might actually start writing some of the background entries for the different gods fairly soon, so stay tuned for that, as well.

That's all for today guys! May the hand of Tzeentch guide you towards your destiny.

So that model I was talking about finally came, and he sure is a beauty! The model is a rather obscure one from a boutique miniatures company called Wonderlands Project Miniatures, and is meant to be some kind of demonic merman. My plans for him, however, are far more sinister.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx344/Funnyman2193/Base%20Model_zpsbpqwqtzs.jpg

As I mentioned before, a theme and source of inspiration for my Slaaneshi stuff is Dante's Divine Comedy. I've always felt that Slaanesh draws the most on the Judeo-Christian mythology; especially the ideas of sin and the nature of evil as the vices of men made manifest. With that in mind, another idea struck me in the shower! I had always planned to do Slaaneshi Daemons based on the seven deadly sins, but I also realized I wanted to have particular models that would exemplify these ideas more so than the others. So, I've decided that I want to do a group of seven Heralds of Slaanesh, with each one representing one of the seven deadly sins. I shall call them the Council of Sin!

This particular herald is going to represent Pride. He will be floating casually above the battlefield, so aloof and self-absorbed that even walking is beneath him. I plan to do work on the base model, including a head swap and possible hand swap. The initial plan is to paint him almost like a statue. I want him to almost give off the vibe of a living work of art; as if Michelangelo's David came to life as a being of pure malice.

That's all for today, just thought I'd give you guys a little taste of something not-Tzeentch. If anyone has any ideas for the other heralds, I'm open to ideas! Until next time! May Slaanesh urge you to greater pleasures!
