grand_master85
So, I've been doing a lot of work on my Death Guard this year, and in really happy with them. But I always like to have a couple of projects on the go and I do like the idea of an opposed force for my army. I'm a huge fan of Chris Wraight, possibly my favourite BL author at present, and I've been enjoying the White Scars story. Always been drawn to them, but I feel like they havnt had as much love over the years. Anyways, following the fighting between those two Legions on the battle ravaged Prospero, I thought they were a perfect choice. Havnt come up with any fluff or such for them as of yet, and it's dry much going to be a project I do a good job on, so I'm not going to rush painting 3k of models in 2 months again! It is a bit of a daunting prospect, mind; there aren't many White Scars armies on here, and One-Eye's are particularly excellent (to the point I was a little out off starting my guys!). Anyways, here's my tester model, a sergeant for one of my Veteran Tactical squads. I love the changes made to the WS symbol, and that masking has been begging to be put on a White Scar ever since I saw the Autilon Skorr mini. I know some have mentioned before when I started a small Imperial Fists project I tend to over weather, but I like the idea of a mid-battle/campaign army. That and it detracts from the stark white. I'm really pleased with him (though I need to tidy up a few bits like the Legion symbol etc) so I decided after I would use my actual Autilon Skorr model to make a Delegatus/Legion Champion. I'm going to give all my guys Tulwars instead of chainswords, which is just a case of heating the charnabal sabres and bending then around till done. Next step is painting him and building the next 4 guys for the Veteran Tactical squad. Also need to figure out how I'm going to base my Scars. Hope you like! (Apologies for the duff pictures, my camera will be updated one of these days) http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/559CDC84-C4DB-491F-ADCA-666EE105B547_zpsgwplo1yz.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/1FAA5854-BB42-4771-8162-1A04D095F5E6_zps1ag3osjq.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/5932B766-E1E3-42C1-99A1-B51A1A2D6D74_zpsjdvvm07l.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/D1BEFEED-E549-4CA2-B7D8-7E3BECF2BDF2_zpsttqkuqqi.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/5471535E-8160-4AD0-A321-2FD3CEDE558D_zps12c1jzhj.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/749A8B37-14E3-4445-94A3-F39CB2FAF9A8_zpserxd97nl.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/2D1C9059-B720-4D9B-A036-5816E81D6BE1_zpsnoczcskk.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/43FDFD8B-A354-414E-9B76-488FB9A09D9D_zpses9agg2l.jpg Edited June 17, 2017 by grand_master85 Tags edited 1ncarnadine, Legio Draconis, apologist and 10 others 13 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314986-grand_master85-and-the-angels-of-death/ Share on other sites

grand_master85
Thanks, chaps! I'm happy with them. The Tulwars are a bit of a pain, it's essentially getting charnabal sabres and dipping them for 10 seconds in boiling water and trying to bend them into shape. Unfortunately, it does mean that they aren't exactly consistent. I've decided for them instead of chainswords as their ccw (I'm going for a veteran force of them), as I find chainswords a pain to paint, and it just adds to that character for the Scars. Anyhoo, I'm currently on a week's break so trying to see if I replicate the scheme well; if so, I'll feel confident enough to put in a FW order and build up a couple of squads and get some Jetbikes and a Sicaran tank. Here's the remaining 4 members of my first veteran squad (they'll be built up to 10-men next week), as well as a Stormseer I've made from some spare bits. Saw a preview of a White Scar from Book VI: Retaliation from the 40k open day. Bit gutted its early next year we'll be seeing it but that will give me time to get the basics for the army sorted. It was nice to see MK II Scars without the tribal markings. I can imagine that might have probably tipped me over the edge! But it's very similar to how I'm doing mine; the gold trim, mainly red symbol etc. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/21117B47-159B-4A66-9F03-0288AC861AA7_zpsyfsynbo8.png http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/19F2832D-A2A8-4F4B-91D1-8F9654386D51_zpsmwd6g8h7.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/06E02F6B-4A40-4DC2-8D6A-E92A8AD41B3A_zps7zfe9hcd.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/CD2204A0-608D-42BB-8810-85DBA2BE3B13_zps86ehrxbg.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/4B5F9B52-0486-4F37-8D33-8E1297F666C2_zpsgimofgp4.jpg Pearson73, GrandMagnus, W.M.Painted and 1 other 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314986-grand_master85-and-the-angels-of-death/#findComment-4200193 Share on other sites

b1soul
One small suggestion...have you considered removing the hand-guards? Those look a bit European pirate-y. I don't think Mongol/Central Asian scimitars would have those Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314986-grand_master85-and-the-angels-of-death/#findComment-4200736 Share on other sites
grand_master85
b1soul - I had thought about it, but the guard is attached to the top of the hand, which would mean if I removed it, I'd have to sculpt the tops of the hands on. Fortunately, it came off fairly cleanly and it was just a matter of pressing a hobby knife in line with the tops and bottoms of the fingers to shape the hand. Easy peasy! Here's a couple of examples (need to finish tidying up the MK IV chap, as well - they also highlight how difficult it is to have the tulwars to look the same, unfortunately!) http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/D66B1E52-E17E-49CA-82A2-43F58FC62C39_zpsb7wuxoiw.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag332/liam_harrison2/Mobile%20Uploads/54C4751E-B76F-4686-8425-4CB924AE04EA_zpsqtswfxkz.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314986-grand_master85-and-the-angels-of-death/#findComment-4200802 Share on other sites
One-eye
This modification of Charnabal into Tulwar is an awesome idea ! And your realisation is on par, I really really love them. The slight differences between them is not a problem imho, I imagine WS to be less monolithic than other legions, even if they remain coherent as a whole. And that's exactly the feeling of your tulwars armed veteran. Your test model is really nice, I love your weathering. The only thing I would say is maybe trying to make your white look less... white. I mean you have a good weathering in the recesses, but the rest of the armor is still white. You'll maybe have a better result in keeping white only for edge highlights, the rest should be more dull, like very light brown or grey. But keep up the very good work, I'm happy to see more and more beautiful WS armies on this board. For the Khan ! grand_master85
Thanks One-Eye, praise from yourself is praise indeed! Better stock up on more sabres :D it's a pain to do them, but it certainly adds to the character of the minis. Yeah I see what you mean. I don't think my iPhone camera is particularly flattering! If you look at the model in your hand, it looks a lot less white. I primed the mini white, and then gave it a coat of roughly 1:5:5 Vallejo aged white/white/paint thinner. Not particularly different but enough of a tint. When I do the panel lining, I tend to wait till the second it's just about touch dry. Then, I dab a cotton bud in white spirit and wipe away the excess. When I do though, I drag it across the armour plate itself which tends to give it a slight coat of the dirty brown. Darkens the armour a wee bit and takes away the starkness of the White. I will have to get a better camera lol. Really though, I think I tried to stick with the white as I've got a death Guard army that used the Vaelljo Aged White and I didn't want another browny/biege-esque army. Now need to think about what I want to add next. Im gonna have two ten-man squads. But my DG army is very plodding; foot troops with big heavy tanks. Not sure about transport, but I'll likely add a Sicaran and 3/6 Jetbikes too Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314986-grand_master85-and-the-angels-of-death/#findComment-4201207 Share on other sites

Doctor Perils
Nice looking stuff Grandmaster ! There are actually quite a few examples of tulwars with hand guards, but the snipped ones look nice too: don't feel the need to cut all of them or keep all of them, it only seems logical they would have a lot of variation. b1soul
Yeah ... the reason I suggested cutting them is cuz they look a bit Napoleonic or pirate-y , but variation can look cool as well Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314986-grand_master85-and-the-angels-of-death/#findComment-4204496 Share on other sites
