Loyalist Emperors Children - Forge Lord and Seekers 18/04

Recommended Posts

So I've finally decided to take the plunge into the world of the Heresy with the release of Betrayal at Calth, the big (or not so big) decision was which legion (yes I know the title of the topic gives it away, but stay with me here...) Firstly I was going to go Death Guard, but after discussion with my local group I was finally swayed towards Fulgrim's pretty boys.

If you've seen any of my previous blogs then my usual take is "I'm not building it straight out of the box" (previously I've done truescale world eaters, el*** ******es and a napoleonic theme IG army) but.....takes deep breath......not this time.

This time I've decided I want to concentrate on the painting, trying to improve my skill level as I wanted these guys to be individuals, with their own story to tell.

And so Commander Anteus Clyme, the silver duelist and the remnants of the 156th company now called the silent choir were born

After all....."Who speaks for the betrayed, the murdered, the discarded and those who have no voice of their own? Who calls out for vengence and for justice? No-one.....until now. We will be their voice. We will be their fury. We will stand for those who cannot. And to our former brothers? We will only bring the perfection of death."

Enough rambling, here's where I stood his morning. 2 sets of BaC, a Deredeo, 10 palatine blades, the limited Centurion and a big bits box. Glued a few of the marines together and applied the base coats before deciding to focus on each one.

Then I started work on the highlights

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/89532D91-D049-445E-A940-B640D7E50747_zpswtfbrpq1.jpg

And the final look Legionnary Tityos

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/F86AEEE1-A624-4950-A223-FC3F71939473_zpsikpdsbwz.jpg

This spurred me on to-

"Sixteen weeks."

"Sixteen weeks cast adrift in the warp, racing to Istvaan."

Sergeant Aello knelt in the ruins and let the grey dust trickle slowly through his gauntleted hand, watching it swirl in the wind and settle onto the scattered armour pieces that covered the desolate ground.

"What happened here? What madness caused this?"

He lifted the pauldron in front of him, pulling it free from the detritus, letting the weak half light catch on the remaining purple lacquer.

His mind was full of turmoil, so many questions that needing answers, but those answer wouldn't be found here. All he would find here was death.

His vox crackled to life.

"Sergeant. Movement."

Aello looked over to where Philotes was standing. The vox-operator was pointing toward the ruins on the far side of the depression.

There had been no life signs. But maybe this is where the answers start.

Sergeant Aello

More to come.....

Excellent stuff. I really like the white pauldron, it works well. I like the purple too. Although I would consider glazing the highlights a little as they look a little harsh. Good on you for doing blue lenses too!

I've been pondering how to do my own terminators, I'll certainly be keeping and eye on your progress!

Thanks Eidolon. Decided that the White pauldron was something the company decided after they learnt the truth of Istvaan, to mark them as still "pure of heart and purpose"

ooohhh, the BA torso and axe looks awesome on that Sgt. Well done.

Thank man, I deliberately bought 2 boxes of the sanguinary guard for just that purpose! (Well that and the palatine blades squad are getting the jump packs!)

That's a very nice matte finish and a rich looking purple. Would it be possible to take some more in focus pictures? Many of them are quite blurry from being too close up.

Thought I'd try and push my painting this time and kinda learning loaded brush, glazing and proper wet blending all at once! I'm using Vallejo Game colours for these guys as the matte finish of the paint means the contrast show a hit better.

Tityos and Aello look great!

Thanks HS, hope that I can keep this up! And oh how I love Wikipedia and its list of ALL the minor Greek gods and spirits. Really comes in handy when you want to name every one of the 60+ marines in your army

Good start. Looks like a slightly different take on the Emperor's Children colour scheme. Should be interesting to see more of.

Thanks, plenty more to come (haven't even cracked open the second copy of BaC or the forgeworld order yet!)

Nice use of the Chest and axe, refreshing to see those terminators EC. I look forward to seeing more.

Thanks Noctern, wanted to try and play something different to the cookie cutter Spartan lists I'd seen...

So all this rambling and an update too!

Rest assured the highlights on Legionnary Tityos and Sergeant Aello have been glazed back and now look a lot smoother (decent photos to follow in the next few days once I get a new daylight bulb). However, the learning curve this has led me down gave me the courage to start on the Lightning claw terminator.

And so I present Veteran Lelantos.

*dammit, didn't notice the smudge on his belt...why is it only when you're uploading photos....*

Now I could also use some help with the bases. I want to do a ruined temple look, but don't want to spend out on resin bases, so any thoughts or suggestions? Also need to think of a colour for the base that'll compliment the purple.......

Awesome work, dude! They're coming along really nicely :tu:

Thanks Kizzdougs, since it was your wonderful EC that inspired me to start this (in fact you may find some similarities when I get the parts for my Prius medicae if you don't mind!)

More progress (don't you just love days off work?) got the next batch built and ready to paint. Decided as I want this to be a long term project I'm not going to stick to an army list. While I know what squads I want to have I'm going to flit between the different squads to break up the potential monotony of 60-70 marines!

Onto the pictures.

2 more tactical marines

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/20C86328-812C-453E-BD99-735C823958A0_zpsn2bnl5vh.jpg

And I have to thank Kizzdougs for the inspired idea of using the high elf spear heads as combat blades.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/0BEA5D48-3306-4102-9900-7AE29BEDB757_zpsx3z2oib3.jpg

Another cataphractii, this time with powerfist and combi bolter

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/7E3ED604-5D9F-41FD-AF63-2AD0ED20FE6A_zpsvzep8dsk.jpg

And the first of my heavy support squad, adding some valuable choom.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/3872BEBE-B185-48F2-8E2E-DD64C02F096D_zpsszkosmjc.jpg

I've also built 2 characters, not sure how they'll fit into the story, but another way of practicing my freehand.

Firstly a legion champion made from the limited edition centurion, palatine blade head and some grey knight bits.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/67A972A7-0D03-4C0A-9695-BC71A491162D_zpsailybxtn.jpg

And then something that was a bit of a spur of the moment idea after seeing the new Blood Angel Chaplain. Again built using some extra grey knight bits.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/88CD0BE3-6D7A-4E51-940B-120FE2C19BCE_zpsvvpfnh0g.jpg

Thoughts?

Thoughts, in order:

1- Dammit, I'm going to end up buying BaC, aren't I? :D

2- blink.png Those spear-blades-as-combat-knives look absolutely perfect for the EC. I would have never known they weren't made for them if you hadn't mentioned the source.

3- The mold-lines on the second Termi's combi-bolter is distracting. Also, drill your barrels. :D

4- CHOOM! That is all.

5 - Perhaps fill in the sculpted muscles on the chaplain's legs? While the decorative chest plates fit the EC as well as the BA, I don't think the flayed-skin does.

Thanks guys. Rest assured they will be gone over with a fine tooth comb to remove mould lines and drill barrels before they're undercoated!

And the muscle stripes on the chaplains body will be filled with GS when I add the loincloth.

I was thinking of using the alien temple bases from secret weapon (or at least my interpretation of them). Thoughts?

Ooo we've had similar ideas for that chaplain, wish I'd have known about that stave before hand! (The one I'm working on is going to look suitably different however ;))

Also nice work on the other guys too

Thanks HS. I have to admit that the chaplain to librarian idea was a spur of the moment thing as I went into the local GW to see if they had Astorath (plans for him as my moritat are still brewing!) and the manager suggested the new chaplain. I eventually want to build each of the consuls that would be present with the survivors company so these guys are the start.

Another week another update.

Firstly some WIPs.

Did some more work on the librarian, mostly filling in the muscle fibres of the BA chaplain to give a smoother armour, but I also added some detailing on the lower right leg to match the left leg and a GS tabard.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/458853EB-B518-4A2D-8C35-33BA54C6B05E_zpsiubfe5q2.jpg

I wasn't happy with the pose of the company champion, he looked like he was just busy flailing his swords around, so I ripped his arms off and rebuilt him with the sword from the sanguinary guard box. Now much happier with him.

Lastly for the WIPs are the tactical marine and cataphractii that are next up on the painting bench.

On to the finished marines

Legionary Ophion, 10th tactical squad

Legionary Homados, 15th heavy support squad

And finally a shot of all the completed marines so far.

Still need to decide on bases for them......

Looking great so far. I really need to get a blog going. Think we all thought the same about the chaplain. I'll be painting the skin on mine as flayed flesh - my army is set just after maraviglia and my kakophoni and tac vets have it so I think it fits. Just deciding whether to use eidolon's helmeted head or the 40k ec head with what I can only describe as "gimp mask and eye"... You'll know the one.

Keep painting! My 15 month old doesn't allow much so I settle for enjoying others :)

Those EC are fantastic brother. Really love the richness of the purple, the blends might be a bit stark, but it brings out the character well!

Are your golds NMM? If so, might be a good idea to splash some straight white highlights just to bring out the sheen more, and some dark grays on the extreme edges for a contrast. Or were you aiming for a dull sheen?

Also, as a recommendation on bases, perhaps a cobbled road or any streetscape with large.medium uniform tile pieces? They're cultured and dignified gents, yes? So bring that out for them!

Nice librarian, never thought that ba chaplain torso would work this well with 30k.

The champion looks sutibly haughty for an emperors child, you're now making me want to make some ec myself.

Keep at it RTB, although I'll forgive you for following the Phoenician's folly! And as for the decision, use the gimp mask head as I've been trying to get Eidolon's helmeted head for my praetor so I'll take that off your hands!

Thanks for the input ckpmax. Yeah I wanted the starker blends to characterise mine as loyalists, makes them stand out more. The gold is my first real attempt at NMM, so taking your advice I've added some pure white highlights and a darker glaze on the shades.

And I ink a cobbled road is the way to go

Thank you Iron Bars, it was a bit of a spur of the moment decision to use the BA bits, and after seeing how well the sanguinary guard torso fitted the sergeant, the librarian just sort of fell together.

These are amazing. I really like that shade of pink sorry purple .

Fantastic work!

Hahahaha, glad you like it

Anyway another update...boy I'm really getting stuff done this week! Talking about the librarian, I think he's finished, at least where I'm happy with it.

So may I present Codicier Dikaiosyne, The Memory, advisor to the council of Talamasca and confidant of the silent choir.

Great work on the chaplain conversion, I really like it. I was pondering on doing something similar, but figured it was too difficult to get rid of the flayed skin muscle. I might reconsider now.....

Do it, you know you want to. It is easier to get rid of the muscle look with milliput washes rather that GS. This was a massive bit of good news as my moritat's being converted from Astorath the Grim and he's covered in them!

Good progress. I'm a big fan of the new Chaplain model and its interesting to see what can be done with him too.

I'm just glad he's a lot more dynamic than some of the character models....

Right, probably last update before Christmas (he says knowing there'll probably be more!)

Firstly I reposed the contemptor from BaC. Cut it at the waist, hips and the right leg at the knee to give a wider, more stable stepping pose. Then rotated the body and the assault cannon arm.

The head was replaced with one of the cataphractii heads. Finally I added a swooping hawk wing to the left arm as a more "visual" legion symbol, and then added rivets made from sewing pins to replicate the look of the forgeworld EC contemptor.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/543B178B-95B1-4506-AAD1-88BD20952DB7_zpspbzmnm89.jpg

Secondly the consul project continues apace, with Astorath (who'll become my moritat) and Asterion (who'll become the captain) arriving as eBay rescues. Just waiting for some more eBay parcels and work can start on them and I can finish the Primus Medicae too.

What it does mean is that I can now start planning my breached squad as I was planning to use Asterion's shield for them. This needed some conversion work, I decided to fill in the runes, scrape off the Minotaur and turn it into an Aquila. The GS is still rough and needs cleaning up when it's dry, just got to figure out the best way to get 10 copies of it now...

So work continues apace, mostly GS work but it's all moving towards a goal.

Firstly built my company vexilia from Sedd. Still undecided as to weather I do a flag banner or a one sided one blowing in the wind (a la the classic ultramarine artwork)

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/86ECF5FF-6092-4029-815D-824F809991E6_zpsxlotehy8.jpg

Started the GS work on my moritat. This was mainly blending in the cast I made from the palatine blades, repairing his hair (hey we may not follow fulgrim but we're still pretty!) and filling the multitude of muscle pattern that seems to cover every nook of Astorath. Just waiting for the Phoenix guard arms, pads and a pair of serpenta for him.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/2E582DAE-33C2-4638-AE01-CF004A6C013D_zpssgfepc4n.jpg

Now lastly suggestions are needed. My primus medicae built from Aethon now has arms, and I started replacing the missing pteruges from the shoulder but, since the head is separate for painting I can't decide which looks better

1. Looking right

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/mark_kilburn/emperors%20children/838D8D3B-2759-4A9C-B4A9-2F725160B43C_zpsckrkkukx.jpg

Or 2. Looking left
