Unto the Anvil of War - A Salamander

Leviathus

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow fraters!

Two weeks ago I bought the Betrayal at Calth boxed game. I immediately assembled one of these fantastic miniatures and decided to test the Salamanders colour scheme! At first I wanted a camo-like green but in the end I went for the standard Warpstone Glow and Moot Green recipe. I also added a lot of tiny scratches to give him a rough appearance.

So here is Ash'var amidst the deadlands of Istvaan V:

Thanks for the comments everyone! Glad you like em!

Wow, spot on Leviathus - really well done. So keen to get my hands on this set now! Please tell me how you weather...looks awesome.

Cheers friend! ^^ I used a piece of foam with Moot Green on it and dapped it on the edges of the armour were I thought it will recieve the most use. Don't overdo this, otherwise it will look awful haha.

Then I took a thin brush and gently painted some more scratches and dents on the armour (water down Moot Green and don't put much paint on your brush, otherwise the scratches will be too thick and prominent).

For the really damaged parts of the armour, I used some Rhinox Hide, painting it on with a brush (paint this on the damage you painted with Moot, it adds more depth. Leave some Moot visible of course).

I hope that explains it a bit! ^^

Excellent job. Can you do a step by step on how you did the green?

Hello Uprising! Can't provide you with pictures though, but here's the step by step:

  1. Primed the model with black;
  2. Next, I basecoated the model with Warpstone Glow. Now, you might wanna do this step with an airbrush if you have one, because it took me three to four thinned coats to get the nice smooth coverage that I wanted (perhaps I have a bad pot of Warpstone haha);
  3. Then I gave the armour an overall wash with Biel-tan green. With this method you can blend the shades a bit more with the basecoat and gives IMO a nicer result. But if you find this too much work you can always wash the recesses only (then skip step 5 msn-wink.gif);
  4. Darkened the shades in the recesses with Biel-tan green and then with watered down Abbadon Black;
  5. Cleaned up the armour with a thinned coat of Warpstone Glow;
  6. Next, I highlighted the edges of the armour with Moot Green;
  7. Lastly some subtle edge highlight of Screaming Skull;
  8. For the weathering, see my comment above!

Cheers! thumbsup.gif

Superb. The freehand and weathering are great, and I really like the metallics (that combat blade has a perfect dull gleam). Which bronze did you use for the pauldron trim?

Is it just the lighting, or is there a slight gloss finish to the black? Also, is there a colour tint to it, or am I imagining things?

Thanks for the comment man! I used Gehenna's gold for the trim (used Mournfang Brown as basecoat and shaded Gehennas gold with Agrax).

The gloss finished is indeed due to the lighting. I fixed the contrast of the photo somewhat and upped the vibrance a tad in Photoshop as the original image was way to dark. So their might be some tint. Mind you, I'm still experimenting with the lighting and photo set-up, so I hope the photo's will get better in the feature haha.

  • 1 year later...

Hello everyone! After quite some time, here is an update of my HH Salamanders! This time it's the Contemptor Dreadnought.

This big guy was loads of fun to paint! It's also the first miniature I painted with an airbrush. Well, painted... I just basecoated the model green because I dreaded the thought that I had to put several layers of Warpstone on... ugh. Anyway, on to the pics!

The gun arms are magnitised btw so I can switch em out when necessary.

Pretty pleased with this guy! :D The weathering on the green armour is unfortunately a bit washed out on the photo's. Enjoy fraters and see you later!
