The 12th Grand Assault Company - Iron Warriors

How do,

So it was nearly five years ago (20th Jan 2010) that I started a little progress log of an Iron Warrior Siege breaker army. Some folks might remember it back on the old TGC forums before it transitioned over here, it had the two vindicators with the bodies piled up in front of the siege shields and folks thought they looked kinda cool (which was the aim to be fair).

Well during my time out from GW those guys were sold off and I moved on to other things.

However BAC got released, those MK4 marines stared up at me and bleated "Come on Chris, you should do another Iron Warrior army... you love painting metallic's after all so it wouldn't be too big a push to do..."

And they niggled and niggled from the screen, until the other week I finally broke and much like the Primarchs that fell to chaos, so I fell into temptation and bought myself a box. And inevitably got a slap from the missus because we're supposed to be saving for a mortgage.

But never mind, the box is bought, mostly assembled, and after checking my old thread on TGC, revisited for another attempt.

So this is that log, as I try to take some plastic soldiers into battle once again.

In the mean time, here's some of those older pictures, just as a bit of a reminder

And yes, the siege shields will make a return in this new army. Too iconic of the army to not have them really.

Cheers

Cheers folks, it's great it left an impression of some people that they remember the first version of the army.

Managed to finish building the Calth box yesterday, so today I started a bit of painting on them.

Pictures in the evening are terrible, so will give it another try tomorrow hopefully.

It's a start at least.

How do,

So some painting has happened, soon to be followed by more now that I'm finished for Xmas - The plan is to finish my Calth Box Set before new year.

So in that vein, this is where the Cataphracts are up to. I've not decided how/where to do the chevrons just yet, but the metalwork is getting there. And yes I realise I need to drill the weapons out, I need to remember where I put the drill and bits first.

Whatcha think?

Tah.

So these are sprayed black to start

Basecoated Warplock Bronze

Drybrushed boltgun metal over the top fairly heavily.

Drybrushed chainmail over that.

Washed with a super super watered down tamiya orange clear, which whilst going over all the metal, some areas get it heavier for some depth to the metal.

Then a light drybrush/layer of chainmail again, then a mox of agrax/nuln oil, last highlight of chainmail and your nigh on done.

You can then pinwash some of the joints with more nuln on areas you think need it.

At least you got the pain then and there, my Mrs has got me the box for Xmas. Which while sounding great on the outside, obviously means I'll be paying for it somewhere down the line ph34r.png

Gorgeous paint job on the terminators. I keep getting tempted to do Iron Warriors for the same reason: metals are fun and you can get great effects (relatively) easily with a bit of forethought. The siege shields are a brilliantly twisted idea. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

  • 3 weeks later...

Morning,

So it's a cold, dreary day outside which means painting mostly likely, pretty much the last few brush strokes for the Cataphracts. Maybe a few more highlights on some bits and they'll be done bar basing. I've not decided on a plan for that just yet so that can wait til some more bits are done.

But otherwise, whatcha think?
